Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Swimming Simplified The purpose of this text book is to simplify the learning and teaching of swimming from a scientific point of view. Our further objective has been to arrange a series of lessons in their logical progression to meet the demands of schools, playgrounds, clubs, and aquatic centers. The text has been graduated to serve the needs of beginners and swimmers, and a special section upon the method of procedure for mass instruction and class management has been arranged for teachers of swimming. We have avoided a detailed and technical analysis of all swimming strokes, featuring only the fundamental ones necessary in the logical progression of swimming. A lengthy dissertation might be written regarding the values of swimming. However, it is sufficient to state that it is one of the most popular and pleasurable of athletic activities; from a physiological standpoint it is one of the most healthful exercises for developing the body symmetrically; swimming is necessary from a utilitarian standpoint because it serves as a means of saving life, A swimming and life-saving test should be one of the graduation requirements in every institution of learning from the elementary through the advanced. Instruction should not be limited to university students, but it is imperative that the youth receive training in swimming and in life-saving. The leading educators, directors of physical education, aquatic authorities, and members of the medical profession realize that in the near future this demand must be met. This work is truly applied physical education. The following are a few of the endorsements on "Swimming Simplified" received from some of the leading educators and swimming authorities: "In my opinion your book deals with the subject in a most scientific and thorough manner. In learning to swim it is especially important that the novice gain confidence at the start. Proper control of the respiration and balance are essential to confidence in the water. Your plan for preliminary instruction in these matters through dry land and other drills and your careful attention to the laws of natural progression are indicative of the scientific study you have made of this sport. Allow me to congratulate you and your sister and wish you the success you deserve in getting your book before the public." Swimming may be considered both as an enjoyable pastime and an invigorating bodily exercise; but as a means of preserving life, it has the greatest claim upon the attention of the public. Upon our ability to swim, sometimes, depends our chances of saving our own life and, possibly, the lives of others. It is one of the most essential features in physical education, and it should never be left to the choice of our youth to acquire the art; its practice should be inculcated as an absolute duty. A knowledge of swimming, both theoretical and practical, should be included in the education of every person, irrespective of age or sex. In the schools of France and Germany every scholar receives instruction in the art of swimming. During the many years I have been connected with the Life-Saving Service I have met with hundreds of persons who were unable to swim, and now that loss of sight compels me to rest on my oars for a time, at least, I embrace the opportunity of putting into book-form the numerous notes I have made from time to time on this subject, with the hope that it may be the means of instructing many in this useful accomplishment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speed Swimming In undertaking the task of giving to the public a short treatise on swimming I recognized the wisdom of obtaining the collaboration of someone well versed in theoretical as well as practical swimming. In looking about me I soon realized that I could do no better than in applying to either Mr. L. de B. Handley, or Mr. Otto Wahle. Both had had a brilliant competitive career; both had followed closely the development of swimming at home and abroad, and though only amateurs, had coached with as much success as any professionals in the country. I was fortunate in finding them only too glad to assist me, and with their aid I put together this book, trying to condense into a few pages all that could be useful to the swimmer, aiming at clearness and brevity, and omitting all unnecessary stuff. Most of the illustrations are from photographs posed for by representative exponents of the strokes, but owing to the difficulty experienced in getting proper effects with the camera, through water, I deemed it advisable to pose them on terra firma. As a consequence, in several cases the body is so strained as to give a slightly erroneous impression, but the positions of the arms and legs are accurate both individually and in respect to each other, and the only fault lies in the fact that the legs are at times too far below the surface. The line drawn across illustrations indicates approximate water-line. In taking these position in the water, however, the body will, of itself, correct the fault, and unconsciously the right balance will be established. Book excerpt: Excerpt from At Home in the Water: Swimming, Diving, Life Saving, Water Sports, Natatoriums There is no pastime or play that is more democratic in its nature than swimming. Where a number of persons are gathered to enjoy this invigorating sport, there is only one line to be drawn - the water level; and the aristocrats are those who can keep their heads above water. In its larger aspect, swimming has an economic as well as a social value, in conserving health. Every state should, therefore, prevent the foun tain heads of our rivers from contamination. Every farmer who would have his home attrae tive should prevent the pigpens and cow byres from polluting the little streams that spring on his soil or pass through it. Farmers can help their sons to think with pleasure of the dear old homestead by having a good-sized swimmin' hole on it. This will help keep the boys from the saloon and make life a little less dry. After a hard day's work a swim will invigorate one and ward off old age. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Harry Raymond looked gratified at this double commendation. The applause of his schoolmates pleased him, for he was by no means indifferent to their good opinion, which he tried on all occasions to deserve. He was no less pleased with Mr. Tower's praise, for he had a high respect for his ability, and that praise was never lightly bestowed. I have spoken of Harry's good appearance. I am obliged to confess that his dress had nothing to do with this. In fact, his jacket and pants were of very coarse texture, and by no means elegant in fit. Besides this, they appeared, though neat, to have seen considerable service, and there was a patch on one knee - very small, indeed, but still a patch. In fact, I may as Well state at the outset that Harry was the son of a house carpenter - an industrious and intelligent man, but still of limited income, and obliged to economize strictly in order to lay aside, as he made it a point to do, a hundred dollars a year as a provision for the future. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Swimming Systematized: A Compendious Manual of Swimming Swimming is at once a necessity and a recreation. A necessity in case occasion requires saving yourself or possibly others from drowning. As a recreation swimming provides healthful exercise. Boys should not be warned to stay away from the swimming hole (providing the water is not contaminated) but should be instructed in correct swimming so that they will be safe in enjoying a healthful sport which is far better than illicit amusement or benumming idleness. A muscular physique is not necessary in order to become a good swimmer. In this course the steps have been made gradual in order that each exercise and lesson may be studied and remembered. It is fairly brief so that the student need not read a volume and then search for a few practical points. As illustrations seem to flash out of mind the moment the student enters the water none are given. The field of swimming and bathing literature has been searched for an analysis of the basic fundamental steps of swimming but finding none treating such details which the author deems necessary and vital to rapid progress this manual is the resultant endeavor to provide enough to smooth the way to achievement. I As no two persons swim exactly alike space has been provided for personal notes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
