Book excerpt: Excerpt from Learn How to Swim!: Pointers About Swimming and Aquatics; In the Water! On the Water! And Under the Water! The Autobiography of a Professional Swimmer Swimming as an art or as an amusement is strangely. Neglected. Every man and every boy should be able to swim - for who knows how soon the art may be called into operation for the saving of life, your own or that of another. And if swimming be useful and desirable for men and boys, why not also for women and girls? Go in the summer season to any watering-place you like, and for one bather who can swim, you will see twenty who are content to paddle 1n the shallows afraid to go a foot out oftheir depth. They have no distaste for the water, evidently; but they cannot swim; and hence are. In danger from every wave. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Swimming: An Illustrated Manual The annual toll paid to Neptune in valuable lives should be a sufficient incentive for every one to learn how to swim. Every child above the age of five years, as well as every adult, should be perfectly at home in the water. The teaching of swimming should be made compulsory in every school and a perfect knowledge of it exacted of all who have the management of vessels, as well as of those employed thereon. As a preventative of disease as well as an up-builder of the body and a moulder of form it stands without a rival among all the systems devised for the purpose of physical care and perfection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Swimming Systematized: A Compendious Manual of Swimming Swimming is at once a necessity and a recreation. A necessity in case occasion requires saving yourself or possibly others from drowning. As a recreation swimming provides healthful exercise. Boys should not be warned to stay away from the swimming hole (providing the water is not contaminated) but should be instructed in correct swimming so that they will be safe in enjoying a healthful sport which is far better than illicit amusement or benumming idleness. A muscular physique is not necessary in order to become a good swimmer. In this course the steps have been made gradual in order that each exercise and lesson may be studied and remembered. It is fairly brief so that the student need not read a volume and then search for a few practical points. As illustrations seem to flash out of mind the moment the student enters the water none are given. The field of swimming and bathing literature has been searched for an analysis of the basic fundamental steps of swimming but finding none treating such details which the author deems necessary and vital to rapid progress this manual is the resultant endeavor to provide enough to smooth the way to achievement. I As no two persons swim exactly alike space has been provided for personal notes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speed Swimming In undertaking the task of giving to the public a short treatise on swimming I recognized the wisdom of obtaining the collaboration of someone well versed in theoretical as well as practical swimming. In looking about me I soon realized that I could do no better than in applying to either Mr. L. de B. Handley, or Mr. Otto Wahle. Both had had a brilliant competitive career; both had followed closely the development of swimming at home and abroad, and though only amateurs, had coached with as much success as any professionals in the country. I was fortunate in finding them only too glad to assist me, and with their aid I put together this book, trying to condense into a few pages all that could be useful to the swimmer, aiming at clearness and brevity, and omitting all unnecessary stuff. Most of the illustrations are from photographs posed for by representative exponents of the strokes, but owing to the difficulty experienced in getting proper effects with the camera, through water, I deemed it advisable to pose them on terra firma. As a consequence, in several cases the body is so strained as to give a slightly erroneous impression, but the positions of the arms and legs are accurate both individually and in respect to each other, and the only fault lies in the fact that the legs are at times too far below the surface. The line drawn across illustrations indicates approximate water-line. In taking these position in the water, however, the body will, of itself, correct the fault, and unconsciously the right balance will be established. Our further objective has been to arrange a series of lessons in their logical progression to meet the demands of schools, playgrounds, clubs, and aquatic centers. The text has been graduated to serve the needs of beginners and swim mers, and a special section upon the method of procedure for mass instruction and class management has been arranged for teachers of swimming. We have avoided a detailed and technical analysis of all swimming strokes, featuring only the fundamental ones necessary in the logical progression of swimming. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Swimming: A Practical, Working Manual, Graphically Illustrated From Original Drawings and Photographs, With a Clear and Concise Description of All Strokes A few days careful practice of this method will enable the enthusiast to reach the shore with the head slightly raised above the water, after which progress in the regular breast stroke should be found easy. The writer wishes to re peat that great care should be exercised in selecting a place free from currents and weeds, as otherwise after the feet are removed from the bottom there is danger of being carried into deep water; and it is also wise to have a friend at hand in case of an emergency. A summary Of the above method is as follows First - Wade out waist deep, bend the legs until the head is under water, with the eyes open. Second, -lie on the surface face down and float. Third, - Use the arms to reach shore. Fourth, -use arms and legs in reaching shore. Fifth, -endeavor to reach shore with the head slightly raised. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Doyle's New Instruction Book on Ocean Bathing, Swimming, and Boating I might not have been living today to tell the story if I did not know how to use the ocean. It was through a frightful and timely lesson I learned in August, 1887, and I will never forget it if I live ninety-nine years. It was only a few weeks after I had performed one of the greatest rescues on the Atlantic coast. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
