Book excerpt: "This report summarises the findings of the 2006-07 Swaziland Demographic and Health Survey (SDHS) carried out by the Swaziland Central Statistical Office (CSO). The SDHS is part of the worldwide MEASURE Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) pogram, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Most of the funds for the local costs of the survey were provided by the Government of Swaziland and multiple donors, namely the National Emergency Response Council on HIV/AIDS (NERCHA), UNAIDS/Swaziland, UNFPA/Swaziland, UNICEF/Swaziland, Italian Corporation the World Health Organization, and Population Services International (PSI). The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) provided additional funds through the MEASURE DHS project to support the local costs and the technical assistance provided by Macro International Inc. Through an arrangment with Macro, the Global Clinical Virology Laboratories (GCVL) of South Africa also provided assistance with the training and laboratory processing for the HIV testing component of the survey. DHS has earned a worldwide reputation for collecting and disseminating accurate, nationally representative data on fertility, family planning, maternal and child health, child survival, malaria, nutrition and HIV/AIDS. DHS household surveys typically interview a nationally representative sample of over 10,000 women and men age 15-49. In recent years, blood tests have been added to the verbal interview to test for various health conditions, including anemia, and more recently, malaria and HIV. MEASURE DHS is implemented by Macro International, Inc based in Calverton, Maryland, and is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Individual surveys also receive funding from national governments, as well as multilateral and bilateral donors.

Five major themes are explored in the book such as the need for a basic definition of "older person," the need for national governments to invest more in basic research and the coordination of data collection across countries, and the need for improved dialogue between local researchers and policy makers. Book excerpt: This study of the food security situation of the poor in Manzini, Swaziland’s economic hub, formed part of AFSUN’s baseline survey of eleven Southern African cities. It found that the urban poor here are less food secure than in any of the other cities in the survey. On the basis of the findings presented in this paper, AFSUN makes several policy recommendations to deal with food security challenges in the poor urban areas of Swaziland. Among these is that government needs to target urban households specifically in addition to its focus on poverty in rural areas. A more national approach that covers both rural and urban areas will help Swaziland to move towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal to reduce hunger by 50%. Because households that are severely food insecure tend to be large, female-headed and female-centred, and have a narrow range of livelihood strategies, it is vital for policies that address urban food security to appreciate the complex relationship between household food security and a range of variables such as income, gender and household size.
