Book excerpt: Based on archival sources and oral history, this book reconstructs a border-building process in Namibia that spanned more than sixty years. The process commenced with the establishment of a temporary veterinary defence line against rinderpest by the German colonial authorities in the late nineteenth century and ended with the construction of a continuous two-metre-high fence by the South African colonial government sixty years later. This 1250-kilometre fence divides northern from central Namibia even today. The book combines a macro and a micro-perspective and differentiates between cartographic and physical reality. The analysis explores both the colonial state's agency with regard to veterinary and settlement policies and the strategies of Africans and Europeans living close to the border. The analysis also includes the varying perceptions of individuals and populations who lived further north and south of the border and describes their experiences crossing the border as migrant workers, African traders, European settlers and colonial officials. The Red Line's history is understood as a gradual process of segregating livestock and people, and of constructing dichotomies of modern and traditional, healthy and sick, European and African.

Book excerpt: After World War I, the League of Nations assigned management of the German colony of Namibia to Britain, which passed control to South Africa as a "trophy" for the country's support during the war. The League mandated that South Africa prepare the country for independence, but South Africa showed no sign of working toward that goal. The clash over interpretation of the League's mandate led to 70 years of complicated diplomacy to solve the dispute. This incisive volume offers an in-depth analysis of the political and diplomatic efforts undertaken by representatives of the United Nations, Namibia, and South Africa--with the assistance of the international community, the Organization of African Unity, and Western powers--during the struggle for self-rule in Namibia from 1920 to 1990. This classic example of conflict resolution technique in global and African studies provides a useful template for conflict negotiation around the world.
Book Synopsis In Search Of Namibian Independence by : Geisa Maria Rocha
Download or read book In Search Of Namibian Independence written by Geisa Maria Rocha and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-13 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the Namibian issue and how it has been handled in the United Nations since 1945, this book discusses the limitations of the UN as a political institution and assesses its ability to manage crises and control conflicts. The UN was established to help maintain international peace and security; since its founding, however, the independence and sovereignty of member states has come to take precedence over the organization's original goals. As a result, contends Ms. Rocha, the UN may be viewed as a passive arena where political actors pursue their policies and priorities in response to the larger realities and forces governing world politics. In the case of Namibia, the UN simply cannot take significant action in expelling the illegal South African administration without the support of the few powerful members who provide it with resources. She concludes that the liberation of Namibia rests ultimately with the Namibian people themselves and the ability of SWAPO to intensify its armed struggle, thereby causing South Africa to consider its presence in Namibia more a liability than an asset.

Book Synopsis Geology of Southwest Gondwana by : Siegfried Siegesmund
Download or read book Geology of Southwest Gondwana written by Siegfried Siegesmund and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the geological evolution of Southwest (SW) Gondwana and presents state-of-the-art insights into its evolution. It addresses the diachronic assembly of continental fragments derived from the break-up of the Rodinia supercontinent later amalgamated to build SW Gondwana during the Neoproterozoic–Cambrian transition, which on a global scale includes parts of present-day South America, Africa and Madagascar. The book presents 24 state-of-the-art reviews including the most crucial controversies. Most experienced scientists about the geology of SW Gondwana from Europe, Africa, South America and Australia present contributions on key areas addressing the interactions between the main cratons and fold belts on both sides of the South Atlantic Ocean. Chapters related to the geology of the major Archean- Paleoproterozoic cratons and Neoproterozoic Brasiliano/Pan-African fold belts enable readers to gain an in-depth understanding of the tectonometamorphic and magmatic evolution of SW Gondwana. The book covers a wide range of issues including metallogenetic, sedimentary, paleobiological and paleoclimatic processes and allows a deep insight into this key period of the Earth’s evolution.
