Book Synopsis Principles of Vibration and Sound by : Thomas D. Rossing
Download or read book Principles of Vibration and Sound written by Thomas D. Rossing and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some years ago we set out to write a detailed book about the basic physics of musical instruments. There have been many admirable books published about the history of the development of musical instruments, about their construction as a master craft, and about their employment in musical perfor mance; several excellent books have treated the acoustics of musical instru ments in a semiquantitative way; but none to our knowledge had then at tempted to assemble the hard acoustic information available in the research literature and to make it available to a wider readership. Our book The Physics of Musical Instruments, published by Springer-Verlag in 1991 and subsequently reprinted several times with only minor corrections, was the outcome of our labor. Because it was our aim to make our discussion of musical instruments as complete and rigorous as possible, our book began with a careful introduction to vibrating and radiating systems important in that field. We treated simple linear oscillators, both in isolation and coupled together, and extended that to a discussion of some aspects of driven and autonomous nonlinear oscilla tors. Because musical instruments are necessarily extended structures, we then went on to discuss the vibrations of strings, bars, membranes, plates, and shells, paying particular attention to the mode structures and characteristic frequencies, for it is these that are musically important.

Book excerpt: The second of two volumes concentrating on the dynamics of slender bodies within or containing axial flow, Volume 2 covers fluid-structure interactions relating to shells, cylinders and plates containing or immersed in axial flow, as well as slender structures subjected to annular and leakage flows. This volume has been thoroughly updated to reference the latest developments in the field, with a continued emphasis on the understanding of dynamical behaviour and analytical methods needed to provide long-term solutions and validate the latest computational methods and codes, with increased coverage of computational techniques and numerical methods, particularly for the solution of non-linear three-dimensional problems. Book Synopsis Inter-cellular Electrical Signals in Plant Adaptation and Communication by : Simon Gilroy
Download or read book Inter-cellular Electrical Signals in Plant Adaptation and Communication written by Simon Gilroy and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plants use the Sun´s energy to synthesize the basic biomolecules that make up all the organic matter of all organisms of terrestrial ecosystems, including ourselves. Therefore, understanding their adaptive mechanisms to variations of environmental factors, both biotic and abiotic, is fundamental, and particularly relevant in the current context of rapid climate change. Some of the most important adaptive mechanisms of plants are the electrical and chemical signaling systems for the exchange of information between proximally and distally located cells. These signalling systems allow plants to dynamically coordinate the activities of all cells under a diversity of situations. In this Research Topic, we present eight articles that bring up new hypothesis and data to understand the mechanisms of systemic electrical signaling and the central role that it plays in adapting the whole plant to different stresses, as well as new findings on intracellular calcium and nitric oxide-based signaling pathways under stress, which could be extrapolated to non-plant research.

Book Synopsis Fluid-Structure Interactions by : Michael P. Paidoussis
Download or read book Fluid-Structure Interactions written by Michael P. Paidoussis and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-12-07 with total page 885 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of two books concentrating on the dynamics of slender bodies within or containing axial flow, Fluid-Structure Interaction, Volume 1 covers the fundamentals and mechanisms giving rise to flow-induced vibration, with a particular focus on the challenges associated with pipes conveying fluid. This volume has been thoroughly updated to reference the latest developments in the field, with a continued emphasis on the understanding of dynamical behaviour and analytical methods needed to provide long-term solutions and validate the latest computational methods and codes. In this edition, Chapter 7 from Volume 2 has also been moved to Volume 1, meaning that Volume 1 now mainly treats the dynamics of systems subjected to internal flow, whereas in Volume 2 the axial flow is in most cases external to the flow or annular. Provides an in-depth review of an extensive range of fluid-structure interaction topics, with detailed real-world examples and thorough referencing throughout for additional detail Organized by structure and problem type, allowing you to dip into the sections that are relevant to the particular problem you are facing, with numerous appendices containing the equations relevant to specific problems Supports development of long-term solutions by focusing on the fundamentals and mechanisms needed to understand underlying causes and operating conditions under which apparent solutions might not prove effective
Book Synopsis Noise and Vibration from High-speed Trains by : Victor V. Krylov
Download or read book Noise and Vibration from High-speed Trains written by Victor V. Krylov and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 2001 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade, high-speed railways have become one of the most advanced and fast-developing branches of transportation. Unfortunately, when train speeds increase, the intensity of railway-generated noise and vibration generally become higher, presenting major environmental problems. Since operating train speeds are gradually increasing in all countries and this trend is likely to continue in the future, the knowledge and understanding of possible noise and vibration effects is vital to undertake possible mitigation measures. Noise and vibration from high-speed trains is a definitive reference work on this subject covering the numerous theoretical and practical questions that need to be answered. This comprehensive new book provides the reader with the most recent experimental data, combining, informative illustrations and authoritative information. It represents in one volume the views of leading international experts on the problem of noise and vibration from high-speed trains and suggests possible ways of reducing its environmental impact.Noise and vibration from high-speed trains is essential reading for all scientists and engineers working on prediction and remediation of railway noise and vibration. It is written specifically for environmental consultants, local authorities and designers of new railway lines and will also be an invaluable reference tool for university students and anybody concerned with topical environmental issues.
