Book excerpt: As the price of liquid asphalt continuously climbs, methods are being sought to decrease material costs, which will also have less impact on ecological systems without compromising material or pavement performance. The use of recycled materials is one method that can replace a percentage of their virgin counterparts, thus reducing the negative impacts on the environment. Asphalt mixture performance is affected by the level of blending that occurs between aged and virgin asphalt binders. The interaction and compatibility of recycling agents (RAs) with recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) and reclaimed asphalt pavements (RAP) have not been thoroughly evaluated since the 1970s. To characterize laboratory mixture performance through their mechanistic and volumetric properties, a suite of tests was conducted to evaluate the low, intermediate, and high temperature performance of conventional asphalt mixtures and mixtures containing RAS and/or RAP with and without RAs. Also, the asphalt binders’ molecular structure was correlated with their cracking potential through binder fractionation. With respect to the mixes without RAs, results indicate that RAS binder does not fully blend with the virgin binder. The actual availability factor was found to range from 35 to 46%. Also shown was an improvement in rutting performance, with no adverse effects to intermediate temperature or low temperature performance because the mixtures are comprised of approximately 90% virgin asphalt. For mixtures containing RAs, a modified mixture design change was developed to improve blending between the aged and virgin asphalt binders. The actual availability factor was found to range from 50 to 100%. It was determined that RAs adversely affected the intermediate and low temperature properties of the mixtures studied due to the increase in the recycled binder content utilized within the mixture. In terms of low temperature properties, the use of soft binder performed similar to mixtures containing no RAs. The concentration of the high molecular RAS species exceeds 40% in which 25% of these are highly aggregated with apparent molecular weights approaching 100K. The use of RAs did not significantly dissociate the very high molecular weight species, and thus failed to improve mixture cracking resistance. In addition, Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) results were inconclusive.

It explores the evolving contested material under “green infrastructure” covering timber, concrete, soil, and pavement. It discusses the resistance to the ambiguity of managing the construction of green infrastructure and drawing on wider debates around applications and processes on construction. These contributions are by no means definitive, but rather an attempt to provide a detached and holistic perspective on the engineering “green infrastructure” concept.

[English]: The SIIV Arena is a space for discussion in which PhD students and young scholars from various universities illustrate their research on topics of specific interest for the Scientific Disciplinary Sector ICAR/04 “Roads, Railways and Airports”. This volume collects the proceedings of the 7th SIIV Arena, held in Naples on 9 September 2022, and held as part of the XVIII International SIIV Summer School: "Sustainable Pavements and Road Materials". The use of construction and maintenance technologies based on principles of sustainability, resilience and circular economy, are a reference, in synergy with the use of secondary raw materials, for achieving adequate mechanical performance for the road structure, with a reduced environmental impact. and costs. The growth gradient recorded in the field of civil infrastructures has defined an incessant use of natural resources with consequent negative effects in terms of environmental sustainability. The reuse of waste in mix design processes and the use of in situ processing systems and/or "low energy" technologies (i.e., cold and/or warm asphalt mixtures) fully meet the objectives underlying the principles of the circular economy. This volume aims to collect the most innovative research in the sector presented in the context of the 7th SIIV Arena by analyzing aspects relating to the design, construction and maintenance of the pavement and road infrastructure as a whole.

Book excerpt: "The topic addressed in the book is very wide, and it is commendable that such a wide range of subtopics are actually covered in enough depth to make it worthwhile to read.....The approach of not only providing technical pavement information, but also relevant applicable regulatory, policy, planning and environmental information provides a good background of the topic to pavement engineers - again information that most of them would not necessarily have had access to without such a compilation of information.....Overall, I view the book as an essential addition to the literature on sustainability in pavements and trust that it will contribute to improved understanding and application of more sustainable practices in highway engineering." - Prof. Wynand JvdM Steyn, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Pretoria, South Africa ************** The worldwide increase in emphasis on sustainability and the environment necessitates a holistic examination of how highways and pavements can be designed, constructed, operated, maintained, preserved and recycled in a more economically, environmentally, and socially sound manner. Rapidly depleting natural resources, anthropogenic climate change implications and increasing financial pressures are some crucial challenges today's and tomorrow's transportation engineers are faced with. A better understanding of the art and science of sustainable highway and pavement engineering will equip them to effect positive economic, environmental, and social change while balancing competing interests. Sustainable Highways, Pavements and Materials provides introductory and yet up-to-date coverage of latest technologies, practices and initiatives related to the contemporary application of sustainability principles during all phases of a pavement's life cycle. Researchers, practitioners, educators and students with an interest in transportation infrastructure will find this book a practical reference that explores various aspects of sustainable highways and pavements, including materials, design, construction, and life-cycle analysis. Important Topics Covered: -Sustainable Transportation Initiatives -Sustainability Impacts of Highways and Pavements -Environmental Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) of Pavements -Recycled Materials and Beneficial Reuse of Industrial By-Products -Long-Life, Permeable, Quiet and Cool Pavements -Green Highway Rating Systems -Emerging Sustainable Pavement Materials and Technologies

The recycling of waste materials in pavement infrastructures could be successfully facilitated based on such techniques. Sustainability in civil engineering has attracted more attention in recent decades, the lack of natural resources, serious environmental pollution, and high carbon dioxide emissions are the main issues regarding traditional infrastructure materials. This book provides the most recent innovations and applications of recycling wastes as high-performance pavement materials, aiming to provide methods for producing green low-carbon and durable pavement structures. In particular, several treatment methods and 3D construction techniques are proposed for the efficient recycling of waste materials.
