Book excerpt: Mark, the celestial watcher, is quivering with excitement clear to his wing tips as he records the stories of children who live through the most thrilling moments of Old Testament history. Such as Jedediah, a friend of the son of Ahab, who sees Elijah call down fire from heaven on Mount Carmel. Or Zillah, daughter of Jedediah, who is captured and becomes a household slave by Naaman of Syria, a leper. Next we meet Miriam, Zillah's niece, who wonders about the mystery child that Aunt Zillah, now back in her own land, keeps hidden away in the Temple. Then there is Daud, the dock thief who steals the belongings of the prophet Joriah, only to meet up with a horribly sick sea monster. In his terror Daud promises the God of Israel that if his life is spared, he will do whatever God wants. Prophets and kings and scheming scoundrels come alive in vivid technicolor.

Blake Pierce, Duke of Taverno, rules half of the nation of Venecia, and has reluctantly assumed command of the simmering rebellion against the tyrannical Viceroy. Only the Viceroy retains any remnant of the Ancients' lost technology. Many men have tried to challenge the Viceroy. All have been crushed. But now, old and forbidden technologies are being resurrected. Men are digging through the remains of dead and buried cities, plotting to regain the secrets of the long-vanished Empire. In all the seven nations, ambitious men are jockeying for position and secretly choosing their side. Blake Pierce has an army and unexpected allies, but for three thousand years the Viceroy has ruthlessly enforced his will. Has the time finally come to throw off the Viceroy's rule? Or will Blake Pierce, his family and his followers meet the same futile end as all those before him who dared to defy the immortal Viceroy? Blake did not ask to lead the rebellion, but little-by-little, unseen forces have been moving against him, and in the end, he has no choice but to fight back or lose everything he has gained, including his life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A love story between friends. It is so well written. [Kyung-sook Shin] has this use of language that is just beautiful and poetic. It’s a great book if you’re looking to escape.” —Chelsea Handler, #1 New York Times bestselling author How friendship, European literature, and a charismatic professor defy war, oppression, and the absurd Set in 1980s South Korea amid the tremors of political revolution, I’ll Be Right There follows Jung Yoon, a highly literate, twenty-something woman, as she recounts her tragic personal history as well as those of her three intimate college friends. When Yoon receives a distressing phone call from her ex-boyfriend after eight years of separation, memories of a tumultuous youth begin to resurface, forcing her to re-live the most intense period of her life. With profound intellectual and emotional insight, she revisits the death of her beloved mother, the strong bond with her now-dying former college professor, the excitement of her first love, and the friendships forged out of a shared sense of isolation and grief. Yoon’s formative experiences, which highlight both the fragility and force of personal connection in an era of absolute uncertainty, become immediately palpable. Shin makes the foreign and esoteric utterly familiar: her use of European literature as an interpreter of emotion and experience bridges any gaps between East and West. Love, friendship, and solitude are the same everywhere, as this book makes poignantly clear.

Book excerpt: From the author of Good Muslim, Bad Muslim comes an important book, unlike any other, that looks at the crisis in Darfur within the context of the history of Sudan and examines the world’s response to that crisis. In Saviors and Survivors, Mahmood Mamdani explains how the conflict in Darfur began as a civil war (1987—89) between nomadic and peasant tribes over fertile land in the south, triggered by a severe drought that had expanded the Sahara Desert by more than sixty miles in forty years; how British colonial officials had artificially tribalized Darfur, dividing its population into “native” and “settler” tribes and creating homelands for the former at the expense of the latter; how the war intensified in the 1990s when the Sudanese government tried unsuccessfully to address the problem by creating homelands for tribes without any. The involvement of opposition parties gave rise in 2003 to two rebel movements, leading to a brutal insurgency and a horrific counterinsurgency–but not to genocide, as the West has declared. Mamdani also explains how the Cold War exacerbated the twenty-year civil war in neighboring Chad, creating a confrontation between Libya’s Muammar al-Qaddafi (with Soviet support) and the Reagan administration (allied with France and Israel) that spilled over into Darfur and militarized the fighting. By 2003, the war involved national, regional, and global forces, including the powerful Western lobby, who now saw it as part of the War on Terror and called for a military invasion dressed up as “humanitarian intervention.” Incisive and authoritative, Saviors and Survivors will radically alter our understanding of the crisis in Darfur.
