Book excerpt: "Arthur Kent is one of the best of our breed." Walter Cronkite has said -- & this book proves it. From deadly battlefields to boardroom clashes, RISK & REDEMPTION describes in gripping detail the challenges award-winning journalist Kent & other foreign correspondents face each day. Kent first takes you behind the scenes reporting events such as the war in Afghanistan, Tiananmen Square & the Persian Gulf War, where he was nicknamed the "SCUD-Stud" for his live television reporting from Saudi Arabia. Then in one of the most controversial exposes in the history of the medium, Kent reveals the shocking mismanagement that led him to sue NBC management for $25 million. After eighteen months of litigation, Kent won an unprecedented settlement package from NBC, prompting one media specialist to comment: "I cannot remember a case with such a public display of retraction." RISK & REDEMPTION is well-written, fast-paced & heartening. Ingram Book Company, 800-937-8000, Baker & Taylor, 400-775-1100 or Bookazine, 800-221-8112. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the ground that horrific night is a courageous young Jewish woman, Gisela Kauffmann. Having just received orders to be herded off to a concentration camp, Gisela will do anything to save herself and her family. In the air, RAF bomber Captain Wallace Campbell is torn between his sworn military duty to bomb an unarmed city crowded with refugees, and his growing conviction that total war is immoral. Surviving Dresden is told through the eyes of Gisela, Wallace, and a compelling cast of characters—a story of personal pain and suffering amid the hope, even as the bombs are falling, of restoring human sanity to a world torn apart. Masterfully sweeping, Surviving Dresden explores the depths of human courage in facing life and death, with human redemption triumphing. “An evocative, inventive tale of war and moral judgment. Surviving Dresden vividly brings to life one of the most controversial episodes of the Second World War.” —Rick Atkinson, Pulitzer Prize winning author of the World War II Liberation Trilogy “An incredibly suspenseful, powerful story with a redemptive ending. Deserves a wide reading audience, even serious consideration for the big screen. Happy to offer my highest recommendation.” —Frank Price, Former Chairman and CEO, Columbia Pictures, and Former President, Universal Pictures

Join the Random House Reader’s Circle for author chats and more. In boyhood, Louis Zamperini was an incorrigible delinquent. As a teenager, he channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when World War II began, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, against all odds, Zamperini survived, adrift on a foundering life raft. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will. Appearing in paperback for the first time—with twenty arresting new photos and an extensive Q&A with the author—Unbroken is an unforgettable testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit, brought vividly to life by Seabiscuit author Laura Hillenbrand. Hailed as the top nonfiction book of the year by Time magazine • Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for biography and the Indies Choice Adult Nonfiction Book of the Year award “Extraordinarily moving . . . a powerfully drawn survival epic.”—The Wall Street Journal “[A] one-in-a-billion story . . . designed to wrench from self-respecting critics all the blurby adjectives we normally try to avoid: It is amazing, unforgettable, gripping, harrowing, chilling, and inspiring.”—New York “Staggering . . . mesmerizing . . . Even today, his voting rights address of 1965 ranks high not only in political significance, but also as an example of leadership through oratory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fifty years since the Holocaust, the Jewish People have felt one overriding concern: survival. The ghosts of the murdered six million, along with the living generation of survivors, have called out the unifying chant, "never again." In 1948, this concern found a second focus in the state of Israel, the ultimate refuge of Jews worldwide. But Rabbi Michael Goldberg finds that these twin pillars of Jewish identity are brittle, and have already begun to crumble; they will not be enough to support or sustain the next generation. The time has come to answer the question: Why should Jews survive? In this provocative book, Goldberg launches a bold attack on what he calls the "Holocaust cult," challenging Jews to return to a deeper, richer sense of purpose. He argues that this cult--with shrines like the U.S. Holocaust Museum, high priests such as Elie Wiesel, and rites like UJA death camp pilgrimages--is deeply destructive of Jewish identity. As the current "master story" of Judaism, Goldberg writes, the Holocaust has been used to depict Jews as uniquely victimized in human history--transforming them from God's chosen to those who manage to survive despite God's silent complicity in their persecution. This Holocaust-centered, survival-for-survival's-sake Judaism is already showing its emptiness, Goldberg contends; the generation that survived Hitler and founded Israel is dying, and the new generation seems adrift (for instance, one recent survey predicts that 70% of American Jewish marriages will be intermarriages by the turn of the century). Jews need positive reasons for remaining Jewish, he argues; they need to return to the Exodus as their master story--the story of God leading the Jews out of slavery and making with them an eternal covenant that gave the Jews a unique place in God's plan. The Jews should survive, Goldberg concludes, because they are the linchpin in God's redemption of the world. Rabbi Michael Goldberg has long wrestled with the crisis of identity facing today's Jewish community. In Why Should Jews Survive?, he provides a provocative and powerfully argued challenge to the dominant theme of modern Jewish thought.

Book excerpt: A moving illustration of the power of grace to elevate us during troubling times, Jeff Jay offers a soulful account of his solo sailing journey that turned into a battle for survival on the open sea. Jeff Jay’s recent life was full of tragedy: his marriage had ended, his father had passed away, his brother had committed suicide, and Jeff’s own alcoholism had taken him to the edge of death. In his desire for a fresh start, Jeff set out on a solo adventure by sea on an old sloop named Lifeboat. It ultimately became a journey of personal transformation. He cast off in Annapolis, Maryland with an eye toward the Caribbean. Finally able to breathe, Jeff relaxed into his first day sailing the Atlantic when a dark winter storm descended, tossing him into a week-long fight for survival on the open sea. As he faced the realization that only divine intervention could deliver him from certain death, Jeff desperately called on the deity that had intervened in the darkest hours of his addiction years earlier. An intensely personal testimony to calling on the power of grace in our darkest hours, Jeff’s is a beautifully written tale of far-fetched dreams, desperate prayers, and those miraculous moments that change our lives forever.
