Finally, three articles are provided that address the challenge of presenting the survey results: "CSPP Alumni: Where Are They Now?" (Special Report, California School of Professional Psychology); "Who Are the Alumni" (Elise Hancock in "Johns Hopkins Magazine"); and "The Shockley Report" (in "Vanderbilt Alumnus"). Specific topics addressed in the guide include: the problems with many alumni surveys; using standard scientific sampling and research procedures; a time-table for planning mail surveys, and a comparison of face-to-face, mail, and telephone surveys. Book excerpt: The report examines how college offices of alumni affairs, advancement and career services conduct surveys of alumni, with data presented separately for colleges at different enrollment levels, tuition levels, Carnegie class, and for public and private institutions. In addition, data is presented separately for offices of career services and offices of alumni services/advancement. The study helps its readers to answer questions such as: how often do colleges survey their alumni? What kind or types of alumni are surveyed? What are the response rates? Do response rates differ by type of alumni? If so, by how much have they changed? How are alumni reached? Through phone, mail, email or online survey vehicles? What measures are taken to increase response rates? How long are the surveys? What kinds of questions are asked? Have the surveys changed in recent years? Have particular topics become more or less popular? What has been the impact of consortia or partnership approaches to alumni surveying? What has been the impact on alumni surveying of the proposed Obama Administration measures to tie higher education funding to demonstrable career results for alumni? What is done with alumni survey data? Which departments at the college request it the most? Which departments do their own alumni surveying or contribute questions to the alumni surveys conducted by other departments?

Book excerpt: The increasing globalization of higher education has made it easy to compare problems, goals and tools associated with conducting alumni research around the world. This volume draws of the perspectives of authors from the United States, German, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands to illustrate the opportunities and challenges of applying alumni research to guide public policy and institutional reform. Topics include: Making an impact with alumni surveys Alumni studies as instruments of public policy: the US experience Increasing potentials of alumni research for curriculum reforms: German Research Institute Measuring competencies of higher education graduates Using alumni research to align program improvement with institutional accountability The emerging uses of alumni research in Spain Alumni studies in the United Kingdom The chapter authors examine ways in which alumni research in the United States and Europe is becoming more relevant to key audiences outside the university and how it is being used to inform important constituencies about the impact, purposes, and successes of higher education. The goal of this volume is to help institutional leaders use alumni research to respond to the increasing demands of state officials, accrediting agencies, employers, potential students, parents, and the general public. This is the 126th volume of the Jossey-Bass higher education report series New Directions for Institutional Research. Always timely and comprehensive, New Directions for Institutional Research provides planners and administrators in all types of academic institutions with guidelines in such areas as resource coordination, information analysis, program evaluation, and institutional management.

This book was released on 2012-10-16 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No less than other divisions of the college or university, contemporary writing centers find themselves within a galaxy of competing questions and demands that relate to assessment—questions and demands that usually embed priorities from outside the purview of the writing center itself. Writing centers are used to certain kinds of assessment, both quantitative and qualitative, but are often unprepared to address larger institutional or societal issues. In Building Writing Center Assessments that Matter, Schendel and Macauley start from the kinds of assessment strengths already in place in writing centers, and they build a framework that can help writing centers satisfy local needs and put them in useful dialogue with the larger needs of their institutions, while staying rooted in writing assessment theory. The authors begin from the position that tutoring writers is already an assessment activity, and that good assessment practice (rooted in the work of Adler-Kassner, O'Neill, Moore, and Huot) already reflects the values of writing center theory and practice. They offer examples of assessments developed in local contexts, and of how assessment data built within those contexts can powerfully inform decisions and shape the futures of local writing centers. With additional contributions by Neal Lerner, Brian Huot and Nicole Caswell, and with a strong commitment to honoring on-site local needs, the volume does not advocate a one-size-fits-all answer. But, like the modeling often used in a writing consultation, examples here illustrate how important assessment principles have been applied in a range of local contexts. Ultimately, Building Writing Assessments that Matter describes a theory stance toward assessment for writing centers that honors the uniqueness of the writing center context, and examples of assessment in action that are concrete, manageable, portable, and adaptable.

This volume will show young writers how curiosity and close observation of the world around them can turn into a column with a distinctive voice, whether they are writing an editorial, a review, a sports column, or a humorous piece. Studying examples from famous columnists or fellow student journalists can help writers develop their own style. Other types of columns, such as letters to the editor and surveys, are also discussed.
