Book excerpt: Based on the Pearson r correlation-coefficient analysis no significant relationship was indicated between the number of years of experience of the teachers and the number of minutes of transition instruction teachers provided to this student population. Very few significant relationships existed between the level of independence students reportedly demonstrate each life skill and self-determination skill and (a) the amount of transition training the teacher had received and, (b) the amount of transition-related instruction teachers reportedly provide. The teacher's focus has frequently shifted from transition to educational reform.

Book excerpt: This booklet reviews the literature on transitional services for youth with behavior disorders, provides examples of successful programs and activities, and identifies key elements of successful programs. Specific sections of the monograph address the following areas: long-term life adjustment; transition studies; vocational assessment; social skills training for obtaining a job; social skills training for the workplace; necessary directions for social skills training; model programs (the Sprague Program and the Career Ladder Program); and key elements of transition programs. Recommendations are included. The report concludes that a comprehensive vocational assessment should identify pupil preferences, abilities, motivational characteristics, and instructional designs. A longitudinal vocational program should be designed to include a postschool, vocational safety net of services. The vocational education program should include a series of community-based work experiences in which general work skills are mastered. The program should also mainstream the student with disabilities into appropriate occupational training courses. Necessary academic skills must be infused into vocational activities. A career education curriculum should focus on job-search and job-keeping skills, and particular attention should be given to social skills relevant to the workplace. Vocational programs must be coordinated with, if not initiated by, the business community in order to engender substantive jobs for career ladders. (Includes 140 references.) (DB)

Review of the literature indicated that a transition coordinator is advised to assist the youth by coordinating between youth, family, and all agencies involved in the youth's care to develop a transition plan which should begin at intake, promoting continuity of care, self-determination, family involvement, academic and employment success, and assistance in navigating the adult mental health system. In this phenomenological study, participants were interviewed to determine the transition practices currently in place. The themes found in these interviews were: transitions differed from case to case, similarity between ideal and successful transitions, similarity in unsuccessful transitions, and barriers to transition. Transitions in practice differed from the transitions participants desired to implement, and from those transitions prescribed by the literature.

Book excerpt: Given their dismal postschool outcomes, students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) are in dire need of effective methods to increase their involvement in the transition process. It is believed that through this increased involvement, students with EBD may have greater opportunity to realize success in their postschool endeavors. This single-subject research study examined the effects of a self-determination program, the CD-ROM version of the Self-Advocacy Strategy, on the transition-related knowledge and skills of students with EBD. After strategy instruction, the students were able to better respond to transition-related probe questions and scored higher on a self-report measure of self-determination. Some students were also able to contribute more in mock transition planning meetings after strategy instruction as compared to before strategy instruction. Implications, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed.
