Book Synopsis A New Framework for Building Participation in the Arts by : Kevin F. McCarthy
Download or read book A New Framework for Building Participation in the Arts written by Kevin F. McCarthy and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2001-06-28 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arts organizations across the country are actively expanding their efforts to increase public participation in their programs. This report presents the findings of a RAND study sponsored by the Wallace-Reader's Digest Funds that looks at the process by which individuals become involved in the arts and attempts to identify ways in which arts institutions can most effectively influence this process. The report presents a behavioral model that identifies the main factors influencing individual decisions about the arts, based on site visits to institutions that have been particularly successful in attracting participants to their programs and in-depth interviews with the directors of more than 100 institutions that have received grants from the Wallace-Reader's Digest Funds and the Knight Foundation to encourage greater involvement in the arts. The model and a set of guidelines to help institutions approach the task of participation building constitute a framework that can assist in devising participation-building approaches that fit with an institution's overall purpose and mission, its available resources, and the community environment in which it operates--in other words, a framework that will enable arts institutions to take an integrative approach to building participation in the arts.

Book Synopsis The Public Life of the Arts in America by : Joni Maya Cherbo
Download or read book The Public Life of the Arts in America written by Joni Maya Cherbo and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its size, quality, and economic impact, the arts community is not articulate about how they serve public interests, and few citizens have an appreciation of the myriad of public policies that influence American arts and culture. The contributors to this volume argue that U.S. policy can--and should--support the arts and that the arts, in turn serve a broad rather than an elite public. By encouraging policy-makers to systematically start investigating the crucial role and importance of all of the arts in the United States, The Arts and Public Purpose moves the field forward with fresh ideas, new concepts, and important new data.

Book Synopsis The Economics of Art and Culture by : James Heilbrun
Download or read book The Economics of Art and Culture written by James Heilbrun and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-04-23 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2001 second edition of this survey of the economics of - and public policy towards - the fine arts and performing arts covers arts at federal, state, and local levels in the United States as well as the international arts sector. The work will interest academic readers in the field and scholars of the sociology of the arts, as well as general readers seeking a systematic analysis of the arts. Theoretical concepts are developed from scratch so that readers with no background in economics can follow the argument. The authors look at the arts' historical growth and then examine consumption and production of the live performing arts and the fine arts, the functioning of arts markets, the financial problems of performing arts companies and museums, and the key role of public policy. A final chapter speculates about the future of art and culture in the United States.

Book Synopsis Reading in America by : Rainer D. Ivanov
Download or read book Reading in America written by Rainer D. Ivanov and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first part of this book offers a comprehensive survey of American literary reading. It presents a detailed but bleak assessment of the decline of reading's role in the nation's culture. For the first time in modern history, less than half of the adult population now reads literature and these trends reflect a larger decline in other sorts of reading. Anyone who loves literature or values the cultural, intellectual and political importance of active and engaged literacy in American society will respond to this report with grave concern. Writers, teachers, publishers, journalists, librarians and legislators -- will view the situation from their different perspectives and offer their own recommendations. The second part of the book examines a program widely implemented by the U.S. Federal government to improve the reading education of our nation's schools. This paper reveals the solutions that the government has used to rectify the problems that are uncovered in the first paper.

Download or read book Engaging Art written by Steven J. Tepper and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engaging Art explores what it means to participate in the arts in contemporary society – from museum attendance to music downloading. Drawing on the perspectives of experts from diverse fields (including Princeton scholars Robert Wuthnow and Paul DiMaggio; Barry Schwartz, author of The Paradox of Choice; and MIT scholars Henry Jenkins and Mark Schuster), this volume analyzes key trends involving technology, audience demographics, religion, and the rise of "do-it-yourself" participatory culture. Commissioned by The Wallace Foundation and independently carried out by the Curb Center at Vanderbilt University, Engaging Art offers a new framework for understanding the momentous changes impacting America’s cultural life over the past fifty years. This volume offers suggestive glimpses into the character and consequence of a new engagement with old-fashioned participation in the arts. The authors in this volume hint at a bright future for art and citizen art making. They argue that if we center a new commitment to arts participation in everyday art making, creativity, and quality of life, we will not only restore the lifelong pleasure of homemade art, but will likely seed a new generation of enthusiasts who will support America’s signature nonprofit cultural institutions well into the future.
