Book Synopsis Noise Exposure Assessment of an Ohio Farm Family by :
Download or read book Noise Exposure Assessment of an Ohio Farm Family written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noise exposure assessment monitoring was conducted for a farm family during each of the three farm seasons, harvesting, growing, and planting. Sound exposure levels for each participant were compared to the OSHA-PEL and ACGIH-TLV. None of the participants exposure, during any task exceeded the OSHA-PEL of 90 dB(A) 8h-TWA. The adolescent in the study was exposed to noise in excess of the ACGIH-TLV during one farming event. The farmer was exposed to noise in excess of the ACGIH-TLV on 7 of 22 farming days and during various tasks. Hearing protection was not used by any of the participants. The findings confirm that if farmers were regulated as other occupations, farm workers would have to be included in a hearing protection program.

Book excerpt: We conducted a systematic and comprehensive review of the peer-reviewed scientific literature with respect to hearing loss among farmers and their exposure to noise, and the determinants of noise exposure, and methods for controlling those exposures on farms. [...] In early 2005 the School of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene was approached by the Farming and Ranch Safety and Health Association (FARSHA) to conduct a literature review on noise exposure and hearing loss in farming. [...] This report summarizes the findings of a comprehensive review of the scientific literature on noise and hearing loss in the agricultural setting; more detailed results are reported in the appendices. [...] A hearing conservation program is useful as it lays out a series of steps that can be undertaken to decrease the noise hazard: 1. Assessment of noise in the workplace 2. Worker education and training 3. Implementation of engineered noise controls 4. Posting of signs in hazardous areas 5. Provision of hearing protection devices 6. Annual hearing tests 7. Program evaluation 3 Compared to crop and da [...] There are many factors which influence the noise levels experienced inside a cab including the noise produced by the engine, the material of the cab, and the use of other noise controls on the tractor.

Download or read book Examination of Noise Levels in Pre 1980 Agriculture Tractors written by Craig L. Hagen and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As family farms grow in size, more machines are being used causing a concern of noise exposure amongst the family members and employees. One of the causes of hearing loss is the exposure to the noise produced by tractors. This study examines the noise exposure on pre 1980 tractors and if the addition of cabs reduces the exposure to a safe level and what influence the radios have on the noise exposure. Tractors were selected from area farms with readings taken in the cab without the radio playing, another with the radio playing and the final reading outside the cab door. Each reading was compared to the OSHA's standard of 80 decibels time weighted average over an eight hour period, the radio and no radio readings were compared to each other and the inside the cab and outside the cab was compared. The data collected from the readings reveals that cabs do reduce the noise exposure to some extent and the radios do increase the noise exposure. The study revealed that the placement of the muffler have more influence on the more exposure than the cabs do. To ensure the operators are free of noise danger, the cabs should be in good condition and the use of hearing protection is recommended.

Book Synopsis Hearing Conservation by : Vishakha Rawool
Download or read book Hearing Conservation written by Vishakha Rawool and published by Thieme. This book was released on 2011-09-19 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the National Institutes of Occupational Safety and Health, approximately 30 million employees are exposed to dangerous noise levels at work and an additional nine million workers are at risk for hearing loss from other ototoxins such as metals and solvents. Millions of children and young adults are also at risk for noise-induced hearing loss in non-occupational settings. Hearing Conservation: In Occupational, Recreational, Education, and Home Settingsis the most current text to cover all major topics related to noise-induced hearing loss, including the military, construction, manufacturing, mining, transportation, the music industry, the home environment, education settings, and recreational arenas. From the underlying principles of hearing loss to audiometric testing procedures to assessment of hearing conservation programs, this book is packed with information for audiologists and other members of the interdisciplinary team who provide hearing conservation services for at-risk groups.Special Features: Many examples of audiometric data, that enhance understanding of all types of hearing impairment, test procedures, and standard threshold shift calculations Protocols for comprehensive audiological, tinnitus, and auditory processing evaluations Clinical pathways and follow-up action steps when a standard threshold shift is confirmed, including decisions about worker compensation in occupational settings Assessment of the effectiveness of a wide range of hearing conservation programs and correction of deficiencies, along with training, educational, and motivational techniques The most current information about hearing protection and enhancement devices, related regulations, selection and fitting, and training workers in how to use them for optimal results A set of discussion questions at the end of each chapter that stimulate review and classroom dialogue Comprehensive in scope, easily accessible, and useful to both clinicians and investigators,Hearing Conservation: In Occupational, Recreational, Education, and Home Settings is essential for audiologists, occupational hearing conservationists, otolaryngologists, internists, occupational nurses, noise control engineers, and any other practitioner who plays a role in developing, implementing, and maintaining hearing conservation measures. It is also an excellent text for graduate level audiology courses in hearing conservation.
