Comparison of the theory with coupling experiments performed on the PLT tokamak with a phased array of twelve dielectric-loaded waveguides at 800 MHz shows that the observed dependence of the net reflection coefficient on toroidal phase angle can be explained only if the surface wave is taken into account. 43 refs., 10 figs.

This construction includes curved waveguides (shells) whose radius of curvature is large with respect to thickness. The work was undertaken to explore a nondestructive way to interrogate an inaccessible side of a structure by launching a surface wave on the other accessible side. For flat waveguides (plates) whose thickness varies slowly in the propagation direction the surface waves couple very efficiently provided the thickness is on the order of a wavelength, but as the waveguide grows in thickness the coupling is quickly lost. The coupling in a curved waveguide occurs provided the ratio thickness to radius of curvature is of the order of 1/20 and the thickness is on the order of a wavelength.

Here I review typical material systems, which exhibit hyperbolic behavior and outline important new applications of hyperbolic metamaterials, such as imaging experiments with plasmonic hyperbolic metamaterials and novel VCSEL geometries, in which the Bragg mirrors may be engineered in such a way that they exhibit hyperbolic properties in the long wavelength infrared range, so that they may be used to efficiently remove excess heat from the laser cavity. I will also discuss potential applications of self-assembled photonic hypercrystals. This system bypasses 3D nanofabrication issues, which typically limit hyperbolic metamaterial applications. Photonic hypercrystals combine the most interesting features of hyperbolic metamaterials and photonic crystals.

This method has been applied in the design of an experimental linear array of 41 elements. Each radiating element consists of an open-ended waveguide driven by an end-on coaxial transition in conjunction with offset posts for the appropriate excitation of the two lowest order modes. The measured input VSWR over a 55 degree scan angle was less than 1.5 on this experimental linear array. This result agreed fairly well with the predicted value. In addition, no degradation on the array pattern due to edge effect was observed on the experimental array with all the elements matched over the 55 degrees scan range. (Author).
