Book excerpt: Polymer nanocomposites are a class of material with a great deal of promise for potential applications in various industries ranging from construction to aerospace. The main difference between polymeric nanocomposites and conventional composites is the filler that is being used for reinforcement. In the nanocomposites the reinforcement is on the order of nanometer that leads to a very different final macroscopic property. Due to this unique feature polymeric nanocomposites have been studied exclusively in the last decade using various nanofillers such as minerals, sheets or fibers. This books focuses on the preparation and property analysis of polymer nanocomposites with CNTs (fibers) as nano fillers. The book has been divided into three sections. The first section deals with fabrication and property analysis of new carbon nanotube structures. The second section deals with preparation and characterization of polymer composites with CNTs followed by the various applications of polymers with CNTs in the third section.

Book excerpt: Nanomaterials have many special properties including a high surface energy and a high specific surface area. Those properties also cause the agglomeration of the nanomaterials. A useful strategy is to use surface modification to change the nanoparticles surface properties to minimize the agglomeration problem and meet other applications of functional materials. In the last two decades, much more research has been devoted to the surface modification of nanomaterials. Plasma polymerization is the one of the main methods of surface modification of particles and has many benefits. However few publications investigate on the surface modification of nanoparticles by this method. In this thesis, two studies are done. In the first part (this part is finished under the guidance of Dr. William van Ooij and in his lab), a pyrrole-coated nano ZnO powder was prepared by plasma polymerization. The surface properties, microhardness and sinteriblity of pyrrole coated ZnO nanoparticles treated by plasma polymerization under different temperatures are studied. Those studies showed that at a suitable treatment temperature and time, the coated nanopaticles increase the surface microhardness and the modified nanoparticles change their surface properties from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. Higher pressure and higher treatment temperature during pellet compaction give higher mechanical properties. The polymer coating improves the sinteribility at low temperature. To achieve good mechanical properties, the polymer-coated nanoparticles need to be treated in a faster sintering and lower temperature environment. In the second part, the Carbon Nanofibers (CNF) are coated using two plasma power conditions. The relationship between the mechanical properties, mainly tensile strength and Young's Modulus, and the dispersion time using ultrasonication and the carbon nanofiber concentration are studied. The coating is also characterized by Differential Scanning Calorimeters (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Time-of-flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS), and Infrared Spectroscopy (IR). The results showed that plasma treated carbon nanofiber cast in a polymer matrix had better tensile strength and Young's modulus comparing to the untreated carbon nanofiber if ultarsonication at relative shorter time. For the current experiment condition, 100w plasma power coated CNF cast in a polymer has better mechanical properties than that of 10w plasma power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbon Nanotube materials including single wall carbon nanotubes, multi-wall carbon nanotubes, and carbon nanofibers have excellent mechanical and electrical properties at the nanoscale. These materials have the potential to be used as fillers in polymer composites to produce properties much higher than those achieved with traditional fillers. However, retaining the excellent properties of nanotubes at the macro-scale poses a significant challenge. The problem arises because nanotubes occur in clumps and are difficult to isolate and align to a reasonable degree, and the nanotubes must also be functionally modified to securely bond to the matrix material. Effective methods for incorporating carbon nanotubes into other materials are being sought by researchers all over the world, and many groups are focusing on achieving the above by dispersing the nanotubes in a solvent and then incorporating the nanotubes/solvent in some traditional epoxy matrix. This project focuses on fabricating epoxy nanocomposites without the use of solvents which are dangerous and increase the cost and time required to manufacture nanocomposites. The problem of dispersion is tackled by chemical and mechanical means. Plasma functionalization, surfactant treatment, controlled sonication, high speed shear mixing, and high pressure casting are used to exfoliate the nanotube bundles. A good interface between the nanotubes and the matrix is obtained by modifying the surface chemistry of the nanotubes by attaching chemical handles to the surface of the nanotubes that can also bond well to the matrix. This project conducts detailed studies on the effect of the many parameters that control dispersion of the nanotubes and the properties of the final composite. The effect of different surface treatment techniques is also studied. The process outlined in this project does not involve any complicated chemistry or processing and holds promise for fabricating composites with improved properties.

Book excerpt: Mechanical properties of epoxy nanocomposite systems were evaluated for nanoclay platelets, nanosilica spheres, and carbon nanotube fillers. The effect of surface modifiers, such as quaternary ammonium salts and epoxy groups, was examined. The Young's modulus and tensile strength for epoxy-clay systems are dependent on the chain length of the alkylammonium modifier. Longer chains allowed better intercalation and mechanical properties. For nanosilica composites, interparticle distance played a key role in the toughness of the composite. Peak performance of the composite was achieved when the spacing between particles equaled the particle diameter. Surface modification with pendant epoxy groups allowed the particles to react into the matrix with the curing agent and achieve proper dispersion. Carbon nanotubes were dispersed in the epoxy matrix via a plasma treatment that afforded free radical sites for maleic anhydride grafting. Higher modulus, strength, and 2 orders of magnitude higher conductivity were observed for the functionalized carbon nanotubes.

Book excerpt: Polymer nanocomposites (PNC) are of great interest owing to the many potential property enhancements possible via introducing different types of nanofillers in polymer matrices. In recent decades, increasing attention has being paid to PNCs due to their light weight, low cost, and ease of processability compared to metal alternatives and due to their novel capability to tune properties. Depending on the end-use application, certain PNC properties are targeted and the their formulation and processing can be manipulated to achieve the desired properties. In this work, different PNC properties have been improved by employing different strategies;(1) Modification of nanofillers: Chemical treatment of nanoclay, multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and graphene nanoribbon (GNR);(2) Synthesis of novel nanofillers: GNR was synthesized from parent MWCNT to benefit from higher surface area and interaction of the novel nanofillers with the polymer chains;(3) Implementation of hybrid fillers: nanoclay as the secondary filler was utilized to further enhance the desired properties of PNC consisting of MWCNT;(4) Amendment of PNC production methods: Optimized PNC production conditions.

UV-curing technology is of particular interest due to its unique properties such as rapid curing process and solvent-free formulation. Alongside with the advantages of utilizing this curing method, carbon nanotubes undergo benefits including high aspect ratio, high transparency, and good mechanical properties. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are hollow cylindrical shaped configuration; consist of one, two, or more walls with an interlayer of non-covalent van der Waals force acting among the carbon atoms of various walls. Besides influencing the UV curing process, the CNTs loaded UV-curable nanocomposites sustain modified surface, thermal, mechanical, physical, and conductive properties which are discussed in this chapter. The health and safety concerns of using these classes of nanocomposite are further discussed.

Book excerpt: The objective of this project was to quantify the energy dissipation that occurs when the interfacial slip of nanoscale fillers is activated in a host matrix material. We consider both polymer (such as polycarbonate, PEO, PEG) and epoxy matrices. The nanoscale fillers considered are carbon nanotubes (both singlewalled as well as multi-walled) as well as fullerenes. The nano-composites are fabricated by using a solution mixing technique with tetra-hydro-furan as the solvent. The interfacial friction damping is quantified by performing uniaxial dynamic load tests and measuring the material storage and loss modulus. We study various effects such as impact of nanotube weight fraction, nanotube surface treatment (oxidation, epoxidation etc.), test frequency, strain amplitude, operating temperature as well as effect of pre-strain or biased strain. The effect of geometry (i.e. aspect ratio) is also considered by comparing the damping response of fullerene-composites with that of nanotube-composites.

Book excerpt: To achieve the research objective, the mechanical behavior of a High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)-based composite reinforced with CNT, CNF, and GNP is processed and characterized first. The load spectrum spreads over both tension and compression for a wide range of strain rates, 10-2-10 4/s. This part of the work establishes a data base for this research. Following the experiment work, molecular dynamics simulations are used to gain insights on the mechanical characteristics and reinforcement mechanisms of different types of carbon nanofillers. Finally, a mesoscale finite element study is performed to understand the correlation between the reinforcement mechanism and the overall performance of the resultant composites.
