Book excerpt: This fast-paced and darkly funny novel asks the question: How do you balance compassion for others with self-assuredness, without either becoming a doormat or alienating everyone close to you? Like many women, Win Earlie has always been the good girl. At home and at work, everyone could count on her to make them feel better, even though her smile was like a mask she wore to convince people to like her. But illness, an accident, family friction, and even a murder compel Win to transform herself into someone confident and assertive. After all, life is too short to pretend to be someone you aren't. Indeed, life seems brighter when she starts to act more like her true self. But then Win's life begins to splinter into pieces, and she might lose everything that is important to her. Did her transformation go too far?

Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on producing hybrid freeform surfaces using an advanced diamond-turning process, understanding the generation of surface accuracies (form errors) and how the choice of cutting strategies affects these, as well as simplifying the complications of generating cutting paths for such freeform surfaces. The breakthroughs behind this thesis are the development of novel, multiple-axis, diamond turning techniques to overcome the limitations of conventional diamond turning processes, an analytical model to optimize the generation of ultraprecise freeform surfaces, and an add-on tool path processor for CAD/CAM software solutions. It appeals to researchers and scholars with a strong machining background who are interested in the field of manufacturing ultraprecise freeform surfaces or in the field of optimizing ultraprecision machining processes.

Book excerpt: Intended to provide scientists and engineers at synchrotron radiation facilities with a sound and convenient basis for designing beamlines for monochromatic soft x-ray radiation, this text will also be helpful to the users of synchrotron radiation who want to help ensure that beamlines being built are optimized for the experiments to be performed on them. The primary purpose of a beamline is to capture as much of the light of the source as possible and then to transfer the desired portion of that light as completely as possible to the experiment. With the development of dedicated, brilliant synchrotron radiation sources, the first half of the task has been greatly simplified. The beamline designer must contend with the second half of the problem -- conserving the brilliance of the source through an optical system which monochromatizes and focuses the radiation.

This book was released on 1970 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The measurement of heat-transfer data in a high-speed wind tunnel is considered in detail. The analysis is restricted to tests where transient temperature measurements are made by thermocouples attached to the back face of a thin-walled model. Methods of estimating the error in obtaining a heat-transfer coefficient due to extraneous heat-transfer rates or the choice of a data-reduction method are presented. The error caused by the presence of a thermocouple in a thin wall was found experimentally. Methods of improving heat-transfer data, including the Thomas-Fitzsimmons conduction correction method, are discussed. (Author).

Book excerpt: "NCHRP Project 4-34, 'Application of LADAR in the Analysis of Aggregate Characteristics,' was conducted by Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia, with participation by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The objective of the project was to develop and evaluate a laser detection and ranging (LADAR) system capable of precise and accurate measurement of the aggregate characteristics of shape, volume, angularity, surface texture, specific surface area, and volumetric gradation. Ideally, the final system would be applicable to aggregate in three size categories--coarse (2 in. to #4), fine (#4 to #200), and microfine (P200)--and suitable for routine use in research, central, and field laboratories for Portland cement concrete and asphalt concrete mixture design and quality assurance. The project, which developed new equipment and computer algorithms, proved technically challenging. The project team developed a prototype Fourier transform interferometry (FTI) system with fully functional hardware and software. The system can characterize aggregate shape, angularity, texture, surface area, and volume of a wide range of aggregate sizes with high accuracy. Assembly and operation of the FTI system consisting of a chargecoupled device (CD) camera, a fringe source, a sample platform, and a software package are fully documented in the report. The accuracy and precision of the prototype FTI system are comparable to or better than those of other systems now available to automatically measure aggregate characteristics, but its current range of aggregate size--3/4 in. to #50--is narrower than desired. Extending this size range is possible in the future by using a CCD camera with a larger field of view and increasing the system resolution through appropriate selection of the equipment components."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the current age of information explosion, newly invented technological sensors and software are now tightly integrated with our everyday lives. Many sensor processing algorithms have incorporated some forms of computational intelligence as part of their core framework in problem solving. These algorithms have the capacity to generalize and discover knowledge for themselves and learn new information whenever unseen data are captured. The primary aim of sensor processing is to develop techniques to interpret, understand, and act on information contained in the data. The interest of this book is in developing intelligent signal processing in order to pave the way for smart sensors. This involves mathematical advancement of nonlinear signal processing theory and its applications that extend far beyond traditional techniques. It bridges the boundary between theory and application, developing novel theoretically inspired methodologies targeting both longstanding and emergent signal processing applications. The topic ranges from phishing detection to integration of terrestrial laser scanning, and from fault diagnosis to bio-inspiring filtering. The book will appeal to established practitioners, along with researchers and students in the emerging field of smart sensors processing.

This book was released on 1970 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geodetic astronomy depends to a certain degree on the precision of available instruments. This investigation covers the instrument errors that effect the determination of a horizontal direction and the effect of these errors on position accuracy determination by horizontal angle measurements and vertical transits. The following errors were investigated: (1) axis errors; that is, horizontal, tilt and target axis (2) instrument errors; that is, divided circle, micrometer, and level bubble and heat deflection of the telescope. These errors seldom exceed + 1 minute. Three common first order instruments, the Wild T-4, Kern DKM-3, and the Askania AP70 were investigated. The direct investigation of the instrumental errors was conducted utilizing very precise auto-collimation methods, and statitical methods for defining the type and magnitude of the errors.
