Book Synopsis Why Arnold Matters by : Michael Blitz
Download or read book Why Arnold Matters written by Michael Blitz and published by . This book was released on 2009-04-30 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After nearly thirty years in the public eye, Arnold Schwarzenegger's rise to fame and fortune--and statesmanship--represents a celebrity the likes of which we've never seen before. As co-authors and longtime collaborators Blitz and Krasniewicz argue in this humorous but heady book, it is not just a matter of his transformation from bodybuilder to megastar to politician. Nor is his governorship of California just a matter of another actor assuming the position. Instead, at the beginning of the 21st century, "Arnoldness" has spread into every corner of our culture. More than a name, more than a spectacular career, he has become a set of ideas--an ultramodern take on the quintessential American dream.Having followed the cult of Arnold for twenty years, Blitz and Krasniewicz are uniquely qualified to illuminate his growing hold on our collective imagination. As an adjective, as a metaphor, as an easy reference point for anyone talking about things tough, forceful, and successful, they'll explain exactly why Arnold matters--and for better or worse, richer or poorer, America may never be the same.

Book Synopsis Livin’ la Vida Boba by : Lucano Divina
Download or read book Livin’ la Vida Boba written by Lucano Divina and published by Talleres Uchawi. This book was released on 2016-03-07 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gathered together for the first time, a gourmet selection of the most read, most shared, and most insulted columns by the Bengal tiger Lucano Divina! After escaping from the Acheron Zoo, Lucano has been involved in the struggle against the imperialism of human stupidity, touching a range of subjects such as: the worst advice for a broken heart, you don’t know what you got until someone else enjoys it, love gets better with damage, profession is the oldest prostitution in the world, and twenty-one things you shouldn’t do to forget your ex, among other irrational truths. Thanks to his writings that strip the self-denominated most intelligent species on the planet, he has shown himself worthy of five death threats that would turn him into a rug, at least ten emails after each publication that seek to drive him mad with offenses, more than two-hundred thousand followers on social media, nineteen marriage proposals, and a previous book (Prince Charming Opens Doors, the Buffoon Opens Legs) that continues to enjoy sales success. Livin’ la Vida Boba not only compiles the highest peaks of the aforementioned struggle—from September 3, 2007 to December 31, 2015—but also frames them in a new human life cycle: you are born, you grow up, you try to reproduce, you get cheated on, you reproduce (with another partner), and you die.

Download or read book Steve Gerber written by Jason Sacks and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2019-06-27 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steve Gerber (1947–2008) is among the most significant comics writers of the modern era. Best known for his magnum opus Howard the Duck, he also wrote influential series such as Man-Thing, Omega the Unknown, The Phantom Zone, and Hard Time, expressing a combination of intelligence and empathy rare in American comics. Gerber rose to prominence during the 1970s. His work for Marvel Comics during that era helped revitalize several increasingly clichéd generic conventions of superhero, horror, and funny animal comics by inserting satire, psychological complexity, and existential absurdism. Gerber's scripts were also often socially conscious, confronting, among other things, capitalism, environmentalism, political corruption, and censorship. His critique also extended into the personal sphere, addressing such taboo topics as domestic violence, racism, inequality, and poverty. This volume follows Gerber’s career through a range of interviews, beginning with his height during the 1970s and ending with an interview with Michael Eury just before Gerber’s death in 2008. Among the pieces featured is a 1976 interview with Mark Lerer, originally published in the low-circulation fanzine Pittsburgh Fan Forum, where Gerber looks back on his work for Marvel during the early to mid-1970s, his most prolific period. This volume concludes with selections from Gerber’s dialogue with his readers and admirers in online forums and a Gerber-based Yahoo Group, wherein he candidly discusses his many projects over the years. Gerber’s unique voice in comics has established his legacy. Indeed, his contribution earned him a posthumous induction into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame.
