Book excerpt: Excerpt from Superfund Research and Development; The Role of R and D Within a Reformed Superfund: Hearing Before the Subcommittee on Energy and Environment of the Committee on Science, U. S. House of Representatives, One Hundred Fourth Congress, First Session; December 6, 1995 From the beginning, a key issue for the Superfund Program has been the avail ability, performance, and cost of remediation methods. Until the mid-1980s there were only a few conventional technologies available for site remediation, such as in cineration or solidification of contaminated soils and pump-and-treat methods for groundwater remediation. These approaches were often high-cost or their effective ness was difficult to predict. Over the past ten years, ord has significantly reduced the uncertainty and cost associated with site remediation by evaluating, developing, and demonstrating a wide variety of innovative remediation technologies. As a result of these research efforts and a variety of epa cleanup policy initiatives, over 50% of the technologies being selected for site cleanup today are approaches which were not commonly in use ten years ago.
