This optimization improves the performance of the applications by maximizing the amount of data transferred per I/O request and reducing the total of [sic] number of I/O requests. This technique is application dependent since knowledge of the individual application is required to exploit its potential."

They are used to address challenging science and technology problems. In recent years, however, progress in supercomputing in the United States has slowed. The development of the Earth Simulator supercomputer by Japan that the United States could lose its competitive advantage and, more importantly, the national competence needed to achieve national goals. In the wake of this development, the Department of Energy asked the NRC to assess the state of U.S. supercomputing capabilities and relevant R&D. Subsequently, the Senate directed DOE in S. Rpt. 107-220 to ask the NRC to evaluate the Advanced Simulation and Computing program of the National Nuclear Security Administration at DOE in light of the development of the Earth Simulator. This report provides an assessment of the current status of supercomputing in the United States including a review of current demand and technology, infrastructure and institutions, and international activities. The report also presents a number of recommendations to enable the United States to meet current and future needs for capability supercomputers.

Book excerpt: The Committee on the Future of Supercomputing was tasked to assess prospects for supercomputing technology research and development in support of U.S. needs, to examine key elements of context-the history of supercomputing, the erosion of research investment, the changing nature of problems demanding supercomputing, and the needs of government agencies for supercomputing capabilities-and to assess options for progress. This interim report establishes context-including the history and current state of supercomputing, application requirements, technology evolution, the socioeconomic context-to identify some of the issues that may be explored in more depth in the second phase of the study.

Book excerpt: Analysis of file system trace data shows that one third of all files archived are referenced again within one day and twenty five percent of the transactions to tape are requests to delete files. In many cases, individual research groups easily account for twenty percent of the total traffic to such an archival system. Finally, some of the file access characteristics are typical of standard time sharing systems; however distinct differences exist."

The main object of this symposium was the interdisciplinary participation of experts in related fields and passionate discussion to work toward the solution of problems. An executive committee especially arranged for this symposium selected speakers and other participants who submitted papers which are included in this volume. Also included are selected extracts from the two sessions of panel discussion, the "Needs and Seeds of Supercomputing", and "The Future of Supercomputing", which arose during a wide-ranging exchange of viewpoints.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past three years, Control Data has cosponsored an applications symposium at one of its CYBER 205 customer sites. Approximately 125 participants from North America and Europe attended each of the three symposia. The Institute for Computational Studies at Colorado State University hosted the first symposium at Fort Collins, Colorado, August 12-13, 1982. The second annual symposium took place in Lanham, Maryland, and was hosted by the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. This volume contains the proceedings of the Supercomputer Applications symposium held October 31-November 1, 1984, at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. The purpose of this volume is to provide a forum for users of Control Data's CYBER 205 supercomputer to exchange common experiences and to discuss results of research projects performed on the computer. The unifying theme across the many disciplines is the development of methods and techniques to exploit the computational power of the CYBER 205. Some what surprisingly, these techniques are quite similar and apply to a wide range of problems in physics, chemistry, and engineering.

The Web has grown so fast that it seems to be becoming an unusable and slow behemoth. Web caching is one way to tame and make this behemoth a friendly and useful giant. The key idea in Web caching is to cache frequently accessed content so that it may be used profitably later. This book focuses entirely on Web caching techniques. Much of the material in this book is very relevant for those interested in understanding the wide gamut of Web caching research. It will be helpful for those interested in making use of the power of the Web in a more profitable way. Audience and purpose of this book This book presents key concepts in Web caching and is meant to be suited for a wide variety of readers including advanced undergraduate and graduate students‚ programmers‚ network administrators‚ researchers‚ teachers‚ techn- ogists and Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

Book excerpt: Global Tourism is a worldwide phenomenon that is the pulse of the world's economies with the major players being transportation, mass travel and energy consumption. Tourism is actually booming and the mass movement of people by air-, land- and water-transportation has tripled in the last several decades. Mass Tourism's dark side is the gas emissions' pollution of air, water and the environments by transporters' engines and infectious diseases. This is reaching alarming levels. Some of the most dire consequences are climate change, global warming and medication-resistant pathogens. GLOBAL TOURISM & THE ENVIRONMENT: THE NECESSITIES FOR CLEAN ENERGY & CLEAN TRANSPORTATION USAGES discusses ways to stem the tide of transportations' pollution and contamination of the Earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although supercomputer systems are faster, and have larger memory hierarchies than other computer systems, such characteristics merely imply the existence of great potential power. How much of that power can be harnessed productively is the central theme of performance evaluation. A set of methods for evaluating the performance of applications on supercomputers has not yet been rigorously defined. This volume is a compilation of research approaches and techniques that are a promising means to that end. The contributions are grouped into three sections. Contributors to Performance looks at applications, algorithms, compilers, operating systems, and memory issues. Measurements and Metrics addresses some of the current techniques and methods of performance evaluation. Among the topics are: the performance monitoring capabilities of the CEDAR system, the methodology behind the Livermore loops, the empirical analysis of system performance, and a software simulator developed in connection with the RP3 project. Methods, Models, and Directions looks at ways of establishing a general and theoretical framework for supercomputer performance evaluation.
