Book excerpt: Super star clusters (SSCs) are important sources of energy, ionizing photons, and metals in galaxies. With masses of 100,000-1,000,000 M , SSCs have the mass necessary to create O and B stars as well as to form globular clusters. Despite their overall importance, little is known about how SSCs form, evolve, and affect their environments. In my thesis, I use submillimeter tracers of gas and its kinematics from the newly commissioned Atacama Large (Sub)Millimeter Array (ALMA) as well as the Submillimeter Array (SMA) to study SSCs, their associated gas and dust and feedback from young stars in two local dwarf galaxies, NGC 5253 and II Zw 40. In II Zw 40, we find a low gas-to-dust ratio (GTD) of ~70 in a cloud near a SSC, whereas we find GTD>270 in an isolated cloud with no associated star formation

Book excerpt: In the hierarchical view of star formation, the densest regions of the interstellar medium (ISM) undergo gravitational collapse to form stars. Typically, many stars are formed in tandem to produce a star cluster. In turn, these star clusters are grouped together to form larger associations of clusters and these form together to shape the large-scale galactic structures like spiral arms. Charting the connection between the star formation at small-scales and the large-scale galactic properties is crucial for understanding the evolution of galaxies. We begin this dissertation in Chapter 1 with an introduction to the current understanding of star formation, the cold gas of the ISM, and how the two are related. We also outline the big-picture questions we seek to answer in this dissertation and the tools needed in these studies. In Chapter 2, we discuss the first step in a joint analysis of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations and Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) dust continuum maps. This study aims to correlate the emission from young star clusters with the properties of the observed dust. Chapter 3 sets up the spectral energy distribution modeling effort for the Physics at High Angular Resolutions in Nearby GalaxieS-HST (PHANGS-HST) star cluster data pipeline. This chapter goes into great detail on testing, validating, and characterizing how well we can model the star clusters. This modeling provides estimates of the physical properties of the star clusters which are critical for the analysis presented in Chapter 4. In this study, we utilize the PHANGS-HST star cluster catalogs in 11 nearby galaxies combined with the PHANGS--ALMA giant molecular cloud (GMC) catalogs in order to spatially correlate the star clusters with their natal gas clouds. With this correlation, we constrain the timescale for dissipation of the GMCs after the onset of star formation.

Book excerpt: This thesis aims to study the earliest heavily obscured phases of massive star formation in starburst (SB) galaxies through a multi-line analysis of the HC3N rotational transitions from the ground and vibrationally excited states (HC3N*). Due to its unique spectroscopic properties, we also discuss the potential of HC3N* as a tool to discern whether the obscured nuclei of galaxies are being heated by a SB or by an accreting super massive black hole (i.e. an active galactic nucleus; AGN). Star formation is one of the most relevant physical processes in the formation and evolution of a galaxy. In particular, the energy released back (feedback) to their surrounding interstellar medium (ISM) from massive stars profoundly impacts the galaxy’s evolution. In a SB galaxy, most star formation takes place in the nucleus and in the form of compact massive star clusters known as superstar clusters (SSCs), which represent one of the most extreme models of star formation. Another major source of energy that can profoundly impact the ISM of a galaxy is an AGN. Both massive star formation and the AGN can reduce the star formation efficiency of a galaxy and even halt future star formation through feedback mechanisms. Hence, to study the physical conditions of the gas driving the formation of SSCs and shed light on the formation of massive stars, which is still not well understood, we need to observe the earliest phases of massive star formation before significant feedback intervenes...

Book excerpt: As the birth places of super star clusters (SSCs), starbursts provide a testbed of astrophysics on a vast range of scales, from the microphysics of star formation to the macrophysics describing the evolution of galaxies and ultimately the Universe as a whole. SSCs represent the dominant mode of star formation in the early Universe. In the local Universe, these ~1-10 Myr old systems host dense concentrations of thousands of massive stars, offering an unprecedented view of the likely progenitors of globular clusters. This dissertation investigates the influence of SSCs on the gas that they ionize and subsequent effect of their starbursts on the galaxies in which they form. In particular, I explore the following questions: how does massive star feedback clear natal gas from SSCs? What conditions allow a cluster to remain bound through this gas dispersal phase or form multiple generations of stars? Through what mechanisms do starbursts regulate the central mass evolution of disk galaxies? How do SSCs drive chemically enriched, galaxy-scale winds from starbursts? To study the launching of winds, we need tracers that can penetrate the dusty clouds around young SSCs, and both high spatial and spectral resolution. The Brackett line (4.05 m) is ideal, but not available to most observers. Using NIRSPEC (Keck II) we can map Br and probe the dynamics of heavily embedded HII regions near SSCs. In this thesis, we present NIRSPEC observations in a variety of starburst environments, with the aim of providing an empirical basis for the emerging paradigm in the formation of the most massive stellar systems.

Book excerpt: The nature of galaxy evolution from the early Universe to the present day is intricately linked to large-scale environment: the environments of galaxies are expected to play a critical role in the development of their morphologies, star formation activity, and the activity of their central Super Massive Black Holes (SMBHs). Large scale environment can strongly and rapidly affect gas reservoirs which are a prerequisite for both star formation and SMBH activity. We would expect the effect of environment to be most pronounced in massive galaxy clusters, where both the density of the intracluster medium and number density of galaxies are the highest. This has indeed been established for star formation activity in the local and intermediate redshift universe, where dense, cluster environments are more likely to host elliptical, quiescent galaxies. However, the impact of the cluster environment on SMBH activity has been significantly less clear. At high redshift, the impact of clusters on galaxy activity is even less well understood. This is due to both a decline in the number of massive clusters at high redshift as well as increasing observational difficulty in reliably identifying and characterizing both the clusters themselves and their member galaxies. This dissertation tries to bring some clarity to these unknowns. First, we present an analysis of SMBH activity in a sample of massive clusters at intermediate redshift where we confirm a dependence of this activity on cluster mass. Second, we describe the spectroscopic characterization of one of the highest redshift galaxy clusters ever discovered, existing at a lookback time of more than 10 billion years. We model the stellar population of its member galaxies and trace their formation back to the cosmic dark ages, when the Universe was only 370 million years old. Finally, we do a deep dive into this cluster's galaxy population and find it to be remarkably similar to that of clusters in the local universe. We identify a tremendously enhanced quiescent fraction relative to the field and find evidence for accelerated size-evolution in these quiescent galaxies.

In recent years, observations with the Hubble Space Telescope have led to the discovery of young, massive star clusters in nearby galaxies, constituting a new class that may bridge the gap between open and globular clusters. In this thesis, I present observational studies focused on understanding the properties of young, massive cluster (YMC) populations across a range of galactic environments. Using multiwavelength HST data from the Snapshot Hubble U-band Cluster Survey, I select a high-confidence sample of YMCs in the spiral galaxy NGC 2997 and perform photometry. I characterize the physical properties of the YMC population, including determining the luminosity and mass functions, age distribution, and efficiency of cluster formation. This work helps to establish that in relatively quiescent spiral galaxies, YMCs tend to form with efficiencies of ~10%, and can survive for at least a few hundred Myr. I then present a study of star formation associated with giant gas filaments surrounding NGC 1275, the central galaxy in the Perseus galaxy cluster. I identify a population of YMCs embedded in "streaks" of stars using far-ultraviolet and optical data from HST. These objects may form when the galactic-scale gas filaments slow their expansion and become gravitationally unstable in the outer regions of the galaxy. This work shows that cluster formation can proceed relatively normally in unusual environments, and may form isolated clusters in the outskirts of galaxies. Finally, I focus on the structural properties of YMC populations in two studies. In the first, I measure the effective (half-light) radii, core radii, and light profiles of ~200 YMCs in seven adjacent HST fields on the spiral galaxy M83. In the second, I build upon the findings in the first using YMC samples from two spiral galaxies in the Legacy Extragalactic UV Survey, NGC 628 and NGC 1313. These studies imply that YMCs emerge from early evolution with similar radii, typically 2-3 pc, and are not strongly affected by their local environment.
