Book excerpt: This project develops a new method for image acquisition to improve resolution. Ordinarily, a focal plane sensor array is arranged in a rectangular grid at sub-Nyquist spacing, and the array must be dithered to sample the image plane at the Nyquist rate in each dimension. However, the Nyquist rate oversamples the image due to the usually circular support of the diffraction-limited image spectrum. We develop efficient algorithms for optimizing the dithering pattern so that the image can be reconstructed as reliably as possible from a periodic nonuniform set of samples obtained from a dithered rectangular-grid array. Furthermore, we develop efficient reconstruction algorithms that can quickly reconstruct the uniformly sampled image from its nonuniform samples. To support this framework, we derive a reconstruction method that accommodates the shift-variant effects of boundary conditions as well as the effect arising from the need to smooth the image less near edges to reconstruct sharp edges from low-resolution data. The method decomposes the image into two parts, one of which can be computed with FFT's and the other requiring a small matrix inversion. The resulting methods allow faster image acquisition as well as faster reconstructions that contain less noise and fewer artifacts when restoring and superresolving the acquired images.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Image Restoration: Fundamentals and Advances responds to the need to update most existing references on the subject, many of which were published decades ago. Providing a broad overview of image restoration, this book explores breakthroughs in related algorithm development and their role in supporting real-world applications associated with various scientific and engineering fields. These include astronomical imaging, photo editing, and medical imaging, to name just a few. The book examines how such advances can also lead to novel insights into the fundamental properties of image sources. Addressing the many advances in imaging, computing, and communications technologies, this reference strikes just the right balance of coverage between core fundamental principles and the latest developments in this area. Its content was designed based on the idea that the reproducibility of published works on algorithms makes it easier for researchers to build on each other’s work, which often benefits the vitality of the technical community as a whole. For that reason, this book is as experimentally reproducible as possible. Topics covered include: Image denoising and deblurring Different image restoration methods and recent advances such as nonlocality and sparsity Blind restoration under space-varying blur Super-resolution restoration Learning-based methods Multi-spectral and color image restoration New possibilities using hybrid imaging systems Many existing references are scattered throughout the literature, and there is a significant gap between the cutting edge in image restoration and what we can learn from standard image processing textbooks. To fill that need but avoid a rehash of the many fine existing books on this subject, this reference focuses on algorithms rather than theories or applications. Giving readers access to a large amount of downloadable source code, the book illustrates fundamental techniques, key ideas developed over the years, and the state of the art in image restoration. It is a valuable resource for readers at all levels of understanding.

Book excerpt: To my wife, Mitu - Vivek Bannore Preface Preface In many imaging systems, under-sampling and aliasing occurs frequently leading to degradation of image quality. Due to the limited number of sensors available on the digital cameras, the quality of images captured is also limited. Factors such as optical or atmospheric blur and sensor noise can also contribute further to the d- radation of image quality. Super-Resolution is an image reconstruction technique that enhances a sequence of low-resolution images or video frames by increasing the spatial resolution of the images. Each of these low-resolution images contain only incomplete scene information and are geometrically warped, aliased, and - der-sampled. Super-resolution technique intelligently fuses the incomplete scene information from several consecutive low-resolution frames to reconstruct a hi- resolution representation of the original scene. In the last decade, with the advent of new technologies in both civil and mi- tary domain, more computer vision applications are being developed with a demand for high-quality high-resolution images. In fact, the demand for high- resolution images is exponentially increasing and the camera manufacturing te- nology is unable to cope up due to cost efficiency and other practical reasons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the issue of image super-resolution—obtaining high-resolution images from single or multiple low-resolution images. Although there are numerous algorithms available for image interpolation and super-resolution, there’s been a need for a book that establishes a common thread between the two processes. Filling this need, Image Super-Resolution and Applications presents image interpolation as a building block in the super-resolution reconstruction process. Instead of approaching image interpolation as either a polynomial-based problem or an inverse problem, this book breaks the mold and compares and contrasts the two approaches. It presents two directions for image super-resolution: super-resolution with a priori information and blind super-resolution reconstruction of images. It also devotes chapters to the two complementary steps used to obtain high-resolution images: image registration and image fusion. Details techniques for color image interpolation and interpolation for pattern recognition Analyzes image interpolation as an inverse problem Presents image registration methodologies Considers image fusion and its application in image super resolution Includes simulation experiments along with the required MATLAB® code Supplying complete coverage of image-super resolution and its applications, the book illustrates applications for image interpolation and super-resolution in medical and satellite image processing. It uses MATLAB® programs to present various techniques, including polynomial image interpolation and adaptive polynomial image interpolation. MATLAB codes for most of the simulation experiments supplied in the book are included in the appendix.

The authors’ use of the term super resolution (SR) is used to describe the process of obtaining a high resolution (HR) image, or a sequence of HR images, from a set of low resolution (LR) observations. This process has also been referred to in the literature as resolution enhancement (RE). SR has been applied primarily to spatial and temporal RE, but also to hyperspectral image enhancement. This book concentrates on motion based spatial RE, although the authors also describe motion free and hyperspectral image SR problems. Also examined is the very recent research area of SR for compression, which consists of the intentional downsampling, during pre-processing, of a video sequence to be compressed and the application of SR techniques, during post-processing, on the compressed sequence. It is clear that there is a strong interplay between the tools and techniques developed for SR and a number of other inverse problems encountered in signal processing (e.g., image restoration, motion estimation). SR techniques are being applied to a variety of fields, such as obtaining improved still images from video sequences (video printing), high definition television, high performance color Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) screens, improvement of the quality of color images taken by one CCD, video surveillance, remote sensing, and medical imaging. The authors believe that the SR/RE area has matured enough to develop a body of knowledge that can now start to provide useful and practical solutions to challenging real problems and that SR techniques can be an integral part of an image and video codec and can drive the development of new coder-decoders (codecs) and standards.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled SUPER-RESOLUTION IMAGE RESTORATION FROM MULTIPLE DECIMATED, BLURRED AND NOISY IMAGES Submitted by YAU Chin-Ko for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2004 In this thesis, super-resolution image restoration problems from several dec- imated, blurred and noisy low-resolution image frames are studied. The high- resolution restored image is modeled as a Markov random field (MRF), and a maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation technique is used for the restoration. In the recent paper written by Raj an and Chaudhrui, two imaging models are presented to restore super-resolution images. In the first model, images are first downsampled, and then blurred. In the second model, images are first blurred, and then downsampled. Noises are added into the resultant low-resolution images. These two imaging models are commonly used in the literature. Two imaging boundary conditions are considered and discussed, namely the periodic boundary condition and the zero boundary condition. For these two boundary conditions, their corresponding blurring matrices are different. They are studied in details in the thesis. For the periodic boundary condition, it can be shown that the high-resolution can be restored efficiently by using fast Fourier transforms in two imaging models. The computational cost of the computation of such high-resolution images is of 0(g2m2logm) where q is the downsampling ratio and m is the size of the low- resolution image. For the zero boundary condition, the preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) method is applied to restore high-resolution images with circulant preconditioners constructed by using the periodic boundary condition on the blurring matrices. The experimental results show that such method can speed up by about 5/4 times faster than the method without using preconditioners. Numerical results are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the restoration of high-resolution images by the proposed algorithm. Finally, experimental results are also given to compare two imaging models. The results show that both imaging models can give high quality of restored im- ages. The usage of imaging models depends on the implementation of imaging hardware in practical applications. DOI: 10.5353/th_b3029252 Subjects: Image reconstruction Image processing - Digital techniques

It provides techniques and methods for; integrating information from multiple sources and using the complementarities of these detections to derive maximum information about the phenomenon being observed; analyzing and deriving the meaning of these observations and predicting possible consequences of the observed state of the environment; selecting the best course of action; and controlling the actions. Here, the focus is on the more mature phase of data fusion, namely the detection and identification / classification of phenomena being observed and exploitation of the related methods for Security-Related Civil Science and Technology (SST) applications. It is necessary to; expand on the data fusion methodology pertinent to Situation Monitoring, Incident Detection, Alert and Response Management; discuss some related Cognitive Engineering and visualization issues; provide an insight into the architectures and methodologies for building a data fusion system; discuss fusion approaches to image exploitation with emphasis on security applications; discuss novel distributed tracking approaches as a necessary step of situation monitoring and incident detection; and provide examples of real situations, in which data fusion can enhance incident detection, prevention and response capability. In order to give a logical presentation of the data fusion material, first the general concepts are highlighted (Fusion Methodology, Human Computer Interactions and Systems and Architectures), closing with several applications (Data Fusion for Imagery, Tracking and Sensor Fusion and Applications and Opportunities for Fusion).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although imaging sensors are the dominant technologies for both user and industry applications, they still have several physical limitations, such as noise and limited spatial resolution. These limitations can be overcome, based on device electronics and physics technology. However, a promising solution is a signal processing approach that has been one of the most active research areas, and it is called Super Resolution (SR). This work proposes SR algorithm that uses an affine block-based with the Maximum Likelihood. A number of experiments were performed with the proposed system to obtain reconstructed High Resolution (HR) images of different resolutions from the same set of Low Resolution (LR) images. Also, a number of experiments were performed to evaluate its behavior as a function of the number of available LR images. The algorithm improves the accuracy of translational registration and accurately recovers HR image even in the case where just very a few input images are provided. This work should be especially useful to professionals in Image Processing, Signal Processing, and Electronics fields, or anyone else who may be considering utilizing Resolution Enhancement.
