Book excerpt: "Every time Laura Lippman comes out with a new book, I get chills because I know I am back in the hands of the master. She is simply a brilliant novelist, an unflinching chronicler of life in America right now, and Sunburn is her dark, gleaming noir gem. Read it." -Gillian Flynn, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Gone Girl New York Times bestselling author Laura Lippman returns with a superb novel of psychological suspense about a pair of lovers with the best intentions and the worst luck: two people locked in a passionate yet uncompromising game of cat and mouse. But instead of rules, this game has dark secrets, forbidden desires, inevitable betrayals—and cold-blooded murder. One is playing a long game. But which one? They meet at a local tavern in the small town of Belleville, Delaware. Polly is set on heading west. Adam says he’s also passing through. Yet she stays and he stays—drawn to this mysterious redhead whose quiet stillness both unnerves and excites him. Over the course of a punishing summer, Polly and Adam abandon themselves to a steamy, inexorable affair. Still, each holds something back from the other—dangerous, even lethal, secrets. Then someone dies. Was it an accident, or part of a plan? By now, Adam and Polly are so ensnared in each other’s lives and lies that neither one knows how to get away—or even if they want to. Is their love strong enough to withstand the truth, or will it ultimately destroy them? Something—or someone—has to give. Which one will it be? Inspired by James M. Cain’s masterpieces The Postman Always Rings Twice, Double Indemnity, and Mildred Pierce, Sunburn is a tantalizing modern noir from the incomparable Laura Lippman.

Book excerpt: The photographs of Chris McCaw (born 1971) are produced with various hand-built view cameras as big as 30 by 40 inches, which are equipped with large aerial lenses designed to allow a maximum amount of light to pass through. Using large paper negatives, McCaw makes very long exposures ranging from several hours to a full day, which result in solarized final images. Besides the attractive neo-primitive qualities of his landscape imagery, the concentrated sunlight passing through the large optical elements actually scorches an etched path across the surface of the paper, rending open the charred skies to hint at a brighter light behind our sun. Sunburn brings together more than 60 of these landscapes, cooked visions in which blackened suns move stroboscopically through veiled skies that hang like curtains over vistas reduced to shadow. The violent shearing or destruction of each image contests the traditionally mellow aesthetic of the landscape photography tradition, and the marks left behind are a physical testament to the power of the sun, which is both subject and collaborator in this chance meeting of creator and destroyer. The excitement of discovering such a remarkable and untapped property of these particular lenses and expired gelatin silver papers is a testament to McCaw's openness to the photographic process, and his continued experimentation over the past eight years has created an equally indelible mark on the tradition of landscape photography. -- Amazon.com.

Book excerpt: When three friends go on holiday to Bulgaria, protecting themselves from sunburn is their only real concern, but when they run into a nightmarish beast unlike any they've ever imagined in the forested hills far from civilization, their vacation becomes a savage fight for survival. "The beast licked its upper lip, teasing dried flakes of blood, remembering other bright nights when it had hunted and killed and wallowed in thick red juices. The beast could manoeuvre in total darkness but preferred nights like this, when it could see the blood dripping from its fingers, the terror in the eyes of its victims, its guts shifting sinuously as it ripped with its fangs and swallowed." Not for the faint of heart or weak of stomach, Sunburn will introduce you to a monster like none you've seen before. The question is -- will you survive the encounter or will your torn flesh and splintered bones be added to the scattered remains in the creature's rat-ridden underground lair? REVIEWS "The story flows like a dream, and the characters are diverse, divisive and distinct. Mr Dash can not only create a thrilling horror, but the kinds of characters, depth and quality with which he completes the novel bring it to a much higher level. Sunburn is engaging, horrific and visceral, interesting and truly well-written." Matthew R Bell's Book Blog Bonanza. "Vivid and unrelenting... Dash fully realizes the unnamed monster in all of its grotesque, imposing physicality... the novel offers captivating tension and brutal, gory fun." Kirkus Reviews. "I cannot go on enough about the book, how great it is and how entertaining. This is an author who knows how to make the readers laugh, cry and scream in terror. To call this a must-read is an understatement!" Kelly Smith Reviews. "A well-written and disturbing piece of fiction that explores relationships and delves into the deepest corners of the human mind. The plot reads like an international horror movie, enticing the reader with a series of detailed and comedic chapters before exploding into a vision of blood-chilling gore." Books, Films & Random Lunacy. "This demonic masterpiece does not disappoint even the biggest of horror fans." Crossing Pixies. "A violent culmination of love, friendships, hilarity, thrill, horror and sex… Isn't that what we all want from a good book?! Sunburn literally had me completely HOOKED. A brilliant and thrilling read." Chase That Horizon. "The elements of classic horror are very much present here. Sunburn held me firmly in the moment, demanding my full attention right to the very last page." Thoughts Of An Overactive Imagination. "Darren Dash builds up the suspense with skillful pacing and a healthy dose of literary restraint, wisely refraining from indulging in the most horrific and grotesque elements of the plot until the reader has become invested in the characters. The result is a horror novel that is suspenseful, fun to read, and at times, very gruesome indeed. It also contains some very good reasons for never forgetting to wear sunscreen." Safie Maken Finlay, author of The Galian Spear. "Like the Hostel films, they have a lot of set up and then shizzle hits the fan... and then hits it again for good measure!" Dark Readers.

Book excerpt: Twilight has enthralled millions of readers around the globe, but Stephenie Meyer never completed Midnight Sun, the story told from Edward's perspective. Midnight Sunburn is a light and reverent parody of that long-anticipated book. It gives a glimpse into what Midnight Sun might have been, with added gentle satire and wry humour. Midnight Sunburn shows the unfolding of Edward's fierce love for the mysteriously closed Bella Swan, explains how he overcomes his thirst for her blood, and reveals why he would rather watch her die than transform her into a vampire. It also divulges what Edward uses to paint on his abs, explains why he can't use smartphones, and gives the reader a glimpse of Carlisle and Esme in Wal-Mart. Reviews for a previous version of Midnight Sunburn:"I just needed closure. This book provided it delightfully.""This is exactly what I've been craving as a fan. It's just spectacular.""Surprisingly good book. Really good job.""Wow! I would highly recommend to everyone who enjoys the Twilight series to read this.""Finally someone kind enough to give us loyal fans our due. This book was well worth my time. Truly enjoyed this treat and will tell others about it.""I have waited so long for this book. I didn't even know it existed. I thankfully stumbled across it yesterday and bought it. This book is EVERYTHING I wanted and then some."

Book excerpt: Dear Reader, My name is Timmy well, actually, it's Timothy Charles Tindell, if you really must know and The Sunburned Zebra is my story. Don't get nervous, though, because I'm not telling it. Charles Kind is the one telling the story, and it's a good one, if I do say so myself. I trusted him to tell it, bad spelling and all, and Charles Kind is mostly honest exaggerates only when he has to. I have red hair, and that hair really bothered me. Well, not my hair, but what people would say about it. Also, my eyes are pretty bad so I have these really thick specs. And these bother me, too, but not so much as my red hair. Where I went to school all the teachers were Nuns, and I didn't like school much. All my friends wanted to be basketball stars. I was better at croquet. Anyway, now that I'm sixteen and about grown-up, I don't get bothered about that stuff so much. Just between you and me, sometimes I have these funny dreams. I know what you're thinking. No, they're not that kind. They're about zebras. Anyway, these zebras don't always look the same. Sometimes their stripes, the ones that are supposed to be white, change colors. Like red! I know a lot of girls, two I really like are Vicky and Candy. But they are not my girlfriends or anything like that. They're just friends of mine. You know, we hang out at school. Also, I think cars are cool. My friend got a Mustang, really nice, and I got this MG, not so nice, and it needed a bunch of work. Oh, I forgot to mention I got in this car wreck. Only, I'm getting a little ahead in my story. Well, I'm not going to say anything more about my personal life, so if you want the whole story, you're just going to have to read The Sunburned Zebra. Sincerely, really, Timmy P.S. Don't believe everything Charles Kind wrote about Vicky and Candy. He made up most of that!

Book excerpt: In the early 20th century, tanned skin was associated with good health. However, people began to protect themselves against potential overexposure to avoid sunburns. Around 1945, the first sunscreen products became available. In the years to follow, a vast number of different sunscreen filters and frameworks regulating filter substances and preparations, and methods characterizing sunscreen products were developed. The perception regarding the tasks of sunscreen products changed several times - initially it was promoted as a lifestyle product, then as a skin cancer preventive means, and more recently also for anti-aging. Different purposes and the widespread use of these products have led to myriad studies and a wealth of information. In this volume, the editors present a current collection of information analyzing and discussing issues related to sunscreen products and their use. These include challenges regarding the ideal sunscreen product including filter selection and formulation issues, measurement methods, performance characterization, safety, and regulatory issues. Further papers address topics related to the use of sunscreen products in everyday life, in vulnerable cohorts and outdoor workers. Controversial topics such as environmental effects of sunscreen products and the risks and benefits of UV radiation in the context of skin cancer, vitamin D and cardiovascular and metabolic health are also covered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Ciceronian Sunburn reconsiders the complexion of Tudor poetics by demonstrating the ways in which poets and pedagogues appropriated the rhetorical brilliance of Cicero to inform their approaches to learning. By recasting the poetic texts of Edmund Spenser and Sir Philip Sidney as works that participated in sixteenth-century debates on learning, E. Armstrong challenges conventional views of Tudor poetics. He argues that the poetry of Spenser, Sidney, and others of the period reflects a more fully developed understanding of Ciceronian rhetoric than is found in the lectures, pedagogical handbooks, and treatises of early modern scholars to which historians of humanistic rhetoric most frequently turn. Reclaiming poetics as a substantive force for the rhetorical tradition, Armstrong finds that the poetry of the period confirms Cicero's dictum that "the poet is the nearest kinsman to the orator." By showing how the poets' work contributed to and was appropriated by those immersed in the Tudor controversies on learning, Armstrong brings to the fore an argument that prizes the practical, ethically directed, and civic-minded over the moral and philosophical detachment for which the poets traditionally are revered. Armstrong offers a study that operates on three interrelated levels. He analyzes the writings of a circle of Tudor poets and scholars, all known to one other and in a sense conversing--Lodowick Bryskett, Spenser (and his glossarist E.K.), Abraham Fraunce, William Temple, and Sidney. On another level Armstrong broadens the context for the conversation by locating it within the divergent visions of learning and rhetoric advanced by Erasmus and Peter Ramus. On a third level Armstronggrounds these early modern disputes, both historically and intellectually, in topics discovered in Cicero's De oratore and De officiis.

Even if the steps you take don't cure the problem, they can relieve symptoms and allow you to go about your daily life, or at least help you until you're able to see a doctor. Some remedies, such as changing your diet to deal with heartburn or adapting your home environment to cope with chronic pain, may seem like common sense. You may have questions about when to apply heat or cold to injuries, what helps relieve the itch of an insect bite, or whether certain herbs, vitamins or minerals are really effective against the common cold or insomnia. You'll find these answers and more in Mayo Clinic Book of Home Remedies. In situations involving your health or the health of your family, the same questions typically arise: What actions can I take that are immediate, safe and effective? When should I contact my doctor? What symptoms signal an emergency? Mayo Clinic Book of Home Remedies clearly defines these questions with regard to your health concerns and guides you to choose the appropriate and most effective response.

This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States, yet most cases are preventable. Every year in the United States, nearly 5 million people are treated for skin cancer, at an estimated cost of $8.1 billion. Melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, causes nearly 9,000 deaths each year. Despite recent efforts to address risk factors, skin cancer rates continue to rise. While those with lighter skin are more susceptible, anyone can get skin cancer—and it can be serious, even deadly. Almost all of the conditions can be caused by unnecessary ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure, usually from excessive time in the sun or from the use of indoor tanning devices. It is alarming that every year, nearly one out of every three young white women aged 16–25 engages in indoor tanning. It's important to shatter the myth that tanned skin is a sign of health. And a “base” tan is not a “safe” tan. Tanned skin is damaged skin. Understanding the risk of UV exposure is crucial to protecting ourselves and our loved ones. That is why “The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Prevent Skin Cancer” is important for all of us. It outlines action steps we can all take—as individuals, parents, educators, employers, policy makers, health care professionals, and communities—to reverse this alarming trend. As a nation, we can all do more to address skin cancer as a serious public health challenge. Everyone is urged to find out more about the risk of skin cancer—and what we all can do to prevent it.

Book excerpt: There is an Open Access edition of this book with a CC-BY-NC-ND license. Soaking up the rays forges a new path for exploring Britain's fickle love of the light by investigating the beginnings of light therapy in the country from c. 1890-1940. Despite rapidly becoming a leading treatment for tuberculosis, rickets and other infections and skin diseases, light therapy was a contentious medical practice. Bodily exposure to light, whether for therapeutic or aesthetic ends, persists as a contested subject to this day: recommended to counter skin conditions as well as Seasonal Affective Disorder and depression; closely linked to notions of beauty, happiness and well-being, fuelling tourism abroad and the tanning industry at home; and yet with repeated health warnings that it is a dangerous carcinogen. By analysing archival photographs, illustrated medical texts, advertisements, lamps, and goggles and their visual representation of how light acted upon the body, Woloshyn assesses their complicated contribution to the founding of light therapy.
