Book excerpt: All available test data on the standard hypersonic ballistic correlation models, HB-1 and HB-2, were examined to establish reference characteristics for use in the correlation of experimental results among the various aerodynamic facilities. The data presented are comprised primarily of static stability and zero-lift forebody axial-force coefficient results at Mach numbers from about 1.5 to 20 for a Reynolds number range from 0.01 to 2700000 based on centerbody diameter. Selected pressure distribution, dynamic stability, and heat-transfer data are included. Comparisons of data from various test facilities show excellent correlation in spite of the appreciable Reynolds number dependence of test results for model HB-2 with natural boundary- layer transition.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of peer-reviewed best selected research papers presented at 22nd International Conference on Computational Mechanics and Modern Applied Software Systems (CMMASS 2021), held at the Alushta Health and Educational Center, The Republic of Crimea, during 4–13 September 2021. The proceedings is dedicated to solving the real-world problems of applied mechanics using smart computational technology. Physical and mathematical models, numerical methods, computational algorithms and software complexes are discussed, which allow to carry out high-precision mathematical modelling in fluid, gas and plasma mechanics, in general mechanics, deformable solid mechanics, in strength, destruction and safety of structures, etc. Smart technologies and software systems that provide effective solutions to the problems at various multi scale-levels are considered. Special attention is paid to the training of highly qualified specialists for the aviation and space industry.

Book excerpt: The 26th International Symposium on Shock Waves in Göttingen, Germany was jointly organised by the German Aerospace Centre DLR and the French-German Research Institute of Saint Louis ISL. The year 2007 marked the 50th anniversary of the Symposium, which first took place in 1957 in Boston and has since become an internationally acclaimed series of meetings for the wider Shock Wave Community. The ISSW26 focused on the following areas: Shock Propagation and Reflection, Detonation and Combustion, Hypersonic Flow, Shock Boundary Layer Interaction, Numerical Methods, Medical, Biological and Industrial Applications, Richtmyer Meshkov Instability, Blast Waves, Chemically Reacting Flows, Diagnostics, Facilities, Flow Visualisation, Ignition, Impact and Compaction, Multiphase Flow, Nozzles Flows, Plasmas and Propulsion. The two Volumes contain the papers presented at the symposium and serve as a reference for the participants of the ISSW 26 and individuals interested in these fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 24th International Symposium on Shock Waves (ISSW24) was held at the Beijing Friendship Hotel during July 11-16, 2004, in Beijing. It was a great pleasure for the Local Organizing Committee to organize the ISSW in China for the first time, because forty-seven years have passed since the First Shock Tube Symposium was held in 1957 at Albuquerque. The ISSW24 had to be postponed for one year because of the SARS outbreak in Beijing shortly before the Symposium was scheduled to be held in 2003, but it has achieved success due to the continuous support and kind understanding from all the delegates. It is very heart-warming to have had such an experience and I am very happy to have served as chairman for the Symposium. I would like to thank all for the contributions and help that they have given us over the past three years, without which we would not have had the Symposium. A total of 460 abstracts were submitted to the ISSW24. Each of the abstracts was evaluated by three members of the Scientific Review Committee and the decision on acceptance wasmade based on the reviewers' reports. 195oral papers, including 9plenary lectures, wereaccepted to be presented in three parallel sessions, and 135poster papers in three dedicated poster sessions. Topics discussed in these papers cover all aspects ofshock wave research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes the proceedings from the 7th IAASS Conference, "Space Safety is No Accident," held in Friedrichshafen, Germany, in October 2014. The 7th IAASS Conference, “Space Safety is No Accident” is an invitation to reflect and exchange information on a number of topics in space safety and sustainability of national and international interest. The conference is also a forum to promote mutual understanding, trust and the widest possible international cooperation in such matters. The once exclusive “club” of nations with autonomous sub-orbital and orbital space access capabilities is becoming crowded with fresh and ambitious new entrants. New commercial spaceports are starting operations and others are being built. In the manned spaceflight arena a commercial market is becoming a tangible reality with suborbital spaceflights and government use of commercial services for cargo and crew transportation to orbit. Besides the national ambitions in space, the international cooperation both civil and commercial is also gaining momentum. In the meantime robotic space exploration will accelerate and with it the need to internationally better regulate the usage of nuclear power sources. Space-bound systems and aviation traffic will share more and more a crowded airspace, while aviation will increasingly rely on space-based safety-critical services. Finally, most nations own nowadays space assets, mainly satellites of various kinds and purposes, which are under the constant threat of collision with other spacecraft and with the ever increasing number of space debris. Awareness is increasing internationally (as solemnly declared since decades in space treaties) that space is a mankind asset and that we all have the duty of caring for it. Without proactive and courageous international initiatives to organize space, we risk to negate access and use of space to future generations.

Book excerpt: Pressure tests were conducted on a standard hypervelocity ballistic model HB-2 in the 40 in. supersonic Tunnel A of the von Karman Gas Dynamics Facility. Data were obtained at Mach numbers 1.5, 3, and 5 at angles of attack of 0, 3, 5, 10, and 15 deg, and at Mach numbers 2 and 4 at zero angle of attack. Reynolds number, based on the centerbody diameter, ranged from 0.32 x 1,000,000 to 2.3 x 1,000,000. Pressure distributions are presented, and a comparison is made of force and moment coefficients obtained from integrated pressure data with results from previous force tests on this model. (Author).
