Book Synopsis Summary of ARI Research on Military Delinquency by : D. B. Bell
Download or read book Summary of ARI Research on Military Delinquency written by D. B. Bell and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most ARI research on military delinquency has focused on predicting, at the point of entry, those personnel most likely to commit delinquent acts within a fixed time period (e.g., by the end of Basic Combat Training). Across the variety of investigations which focused on various types of delinquency some consistent findings emerge. Component of service (i.e., volunteers vs. draftees) and several closely associated variables--age at entry, level of education, and mental ability--are associated with delinquent acts; such background data and peer ratings provide the best predictors. Attempts to develop a more precise profile of the military delinquent have not been very successful, and programs aimed at rehabilitation of potential delinquents have actually proved counterproductive. All of these outcomes suggest that future research should concentrate more on the context in which delinquency occurs and less on the characteristics of those who commit delinquent acts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although diversity is a twentieth-century term, as the United States continues through the twenty-first century, the issue of diversity in society and in organizations is becoming more complex. Managing Diversity in the Military addresses current equal opportunity and diversity issues and explores how the military is attempting to resolve them. The research presented reflects interests of scholars from various backgrounds who use different models, approaches, and methodologies, many of which are adapted from the study of civilian institutions. The work is divided into five sections ""Contemporary Approaches to Managing Diversity,"" ""Diversifying Leadership: Equity in Evaluation and Promotion,"" ""Gender Integration and Sexual Harassment,"" ""Military Discipline and Race,"" and ""Where Do We Go from Here?"" which proposes future research directions for equal opportunity and diversity management in the armed forces. All of the areas explored in this accessibly written volume have counterparts in the civilian sector. Book Synopsis Temporal Investigations Into the Relationship Between Affect and Discretionary Work Behavior by : Howard M. Weiss
Download or read book Temporal Investigations Into the Relationship Between Affect and Discretionary Work Behavior written by Howard M. Weiss and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a long hiatus, mood and emotions (collectively known as affect) are enjoying a strong resurgence in many areas of psychology. Vis-a-is the workplace, Affective Events Theory predicts that stochastic workplace events influence workplace affect, which in turn influences various workplace behaviors relevant to job performance. Moreover, like the events and affect that precede them, these behaviors are highly volatile within persons over time. The present set of research projects were designed to test, and extend, Affective Events Theory. The research focuses on the contextual or discretionary aspects of job performance--namely, organizational citizenship behavior and counterproductive (deviant) work behavior. These behaviors, typically studied at the between-person level, were shown in the present research to be highly volatile within persons over time and reliably related to affect. Moreover, within persons, citizenship and counterproductive behavior were themselves virtually unrelated. Finally, experiencing a common form of counterproductive behavior was associated with enacting similar behavior as well as other forms of counterproductive behavior. The results are relevant to the Army's continued search for the good Soldier: one who engages in citizenship behavior and refrains from counterproductive/deviant behavior.
Book Synopsis Organizational Reaction to Social Deviance by : Robert Joseph Stevenson
Download or read book Organizational Reaction to Social Deviance written by Robert Joseph Stevenson and published by Algora Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study in criminology, sociology, and the US Military, explores changes in the meaning and production of deviant populations in American military settings since 1941. It is designed to highlight the operation of an ethos of control as armed forces and society undergo historically unstable accommodation and conflict. The author examines time series data on organizational reaction to deviance in military settings ('Bad Paper Discharges,'¥ courts-martial, and administrative controls) in light of central characteristics of military settings (the social composition of officer and enlisted ranks, force levels, technological changes in war hardware and the distribution of risks faced by various kinds of soldiers). Propositions from the deviance literature concerning 1) the constancy of punishment, 2) the duration, intensity, and priority of sanctioning, and 3) cohesion and stress are examined in military contexts to discern the changing social control climates therein. Some sources of the shift are located in the role that risk plays in the system and the function of the officer corps as agents of social control. In short: the character of social institutions is knowable, in part, by studying the manner in which deviants therein are controlled, stigmatized and expelled. An extensive bibliography is provided.
Book Synopsis Dyslogic Syndrome by : Bernard Rimland
Download or read book Dyslogic Syndrome written by Bernard Rimland and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2007-11-15 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dyslogical children are commonly labelled as having one or more of a mix of conditions that include Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Bipolar Disorder and Oppositional Defiant Disorder. The number of children who could be described as dyslogical continues to rise sharply, and society has a tendency to lay the blame for this trend on poor parenting or bad schooling. In this ground-breaking book, Bernard Rimland argues that such `conventional wisdom' is not just mistaken but dangerous. Drawing on the latest research, Rimland outlines the impact of biological factors on today's children and exposes the influences of toxins and dietary deficiencies. Dyslogic Syndrome is full of valuable advice on the safe, effective treatments that are available to children, and offers positive strategies for helping parents and professionals to do the best for their dyslogical child.
