This study on transfer student success is grounded in a student-centered initial college choice-persistence nexus model that asserts there is a nexus between the factors that determine whether a student initially enters higher education through a community college or four-year institution and the factors that affect persistence to a baccalaureate. Utilizing two-group path analysis, this study found that transfer GPA, transfer hours, completion of college algebra, completion of freshmen English, and first-semester GPA had a positive effect on baccalaureate attainment for community college transfer students to a Midwestern, public research university. In contrast, only first-semester GPA and transfer hours had a positive effect on baccalaureate attainment for four-year transfer students to the same institution. Additionally, it was found that the effects of entering academic history on first-semester GPA and degree attainment differed for community college and four-year transfer students. This difference is attributed to the nexus of factors that affect initial college choice and persistence.

In addition, the study attempted to answer the identical question regarding the rate at which native students graduate from the 4 year college and the variables that can be used to explain the native student graduate rates. Finally, the study made comparisons between the community college transfer student variables that explained the corresponding graduation rates and the native student variables that explained their corresponding graduation rates to determine if differences existed between the two groups. The data collected on the community college transfer and native students at Mississippi State University was analyzed in a two-group logistical regression. For each group, a logistical regression was built, that included the independent variables of the student demographic characteristics (age, gender, race and academic discipline) and the ability measures/lower-level academic success measures (ACT/SAT test score, high school grade point average and lower level college grade point average). The results from the logistical regression for the transfer and native students were compared. Delta-Ps, the change in predicted probability, were calculated for each independent variable and then compared for transfer and native students. The conclusions of the study were the following native students appear to be better prepared to graduate than community college transfer students, the lower-level grade point average and number of lower-level credit hours earned appear to consistently explain the rates of graduation for both groups, as these two variables were significant for both groups. Transfer and native students in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) category appear to be less prepared to graduate or encounter more obstacles to graduate than students in the other academic discipline categories. Running separate logistic models for each academic discipline category was effective in assessing the particular variables that impact graduation for the community college transfer and native students.

The majority require "remedial" coursework in reading, writing and, especially, math. Most students who begin with this remedial coursework do not go on to earn a certificate or degree. Low levels of college graduation have high direct cost, adversely affect the U.S. economy and contribute to socioeconomic inequity. The literature review shows that both academic and nonacademic factors influence both completion of remedial coursework and completion of first year in college. It introduces research on a variety of strategies for increasing completion and persistence for underprepared students. The purpose of this ex post facto study was to identify nonacademic factors that may influence the ability of underprepared, community college students to transition into college-level work and the extent to which these factors could be used to predict persistence. Logistic regression was used to analyze the effect of gender, race/ethnicity, age, enrollment status (full- or part-time), receipt of financial aid, family status and purpose. Each factor was evaluated with the other six factors held constant. The dependent variable was the completion of 15 college-level credits. The population for this study was students in the Washington State system of 34 community colleges. Records for 15,177 students were considered. The findings reflected that at least one category in each of the seven variables had a statistically significant relationship with persistence at the .05 level. The best predictor of student success in transition was enrollment status (full- or part-time) followed by race/ethnicity, gender, receipt of financial aid and family status. The findings are significant because they direct further research into the factors and experiences that influence success, and point toward practices to address gaps.

Book excerpt: My dissertation utilizes an explanatory, sequential mixed-methods research design to assess factors influencing community college students' transfer probability to baccalaureate-granting institutions and to present promising practices in colleges and states directed at improving upward transfer, particularly for low-income and first-generation college students. First, the dissertation features multi-level random-effects model analyses to better understand how factors such as students' academic and social integration, community college characteristics and expenditures, and state transfer policy components influence community college students' 2/4 transfer probability[1] over a recent six-year period (utilizing the Beginning Postsecondary Study 2003-2009). Second, comparative case studies of six community colleges[2] in three states (Florida, Georgia, and Washington) report about how community colleges and state policy leaders currently engage in experimentation and innovation[3] in seeking to improve students' 2/4 transfer, and how they use data to inform decision-making on this issue. The case studies consider ways in which community college and state policy leaders make decisions regarding improving students' transfer prospects, the types of promising initiatives being implemented, and what is being learned from them. The case study design used above-average compared to average performers[4] to illustrate field implementation dynamics that may influence student transfer outcomes, and provide deeper examination of issues affecting community college students as they are making the decision to transfer to a four-year institution, with the goal of improving policies and practices. Similar to other researchers' findings, I found that most state policy variables[5] designed to affect transfer demonstrated little or no statistical association with the probability of transfer, after controlling for state wealth (gross state product per capita (GSP), shown to be associated with the historic rise of state cooperative agreements facilitating transfer in the 1980s and 1990s). Gross state product per capita is also highly positively correlated with the percentage of the state's population with bachelor's degrees, also significantly associated with increased upward transfer probability. The close correlation between state wealth and the proportion of state residents with a bachelor's degree education are likely proxies for a state's social capital and stronger demand for affordable access to college education by state residents, which may be accomplished through 2/4 transfer educational options in the state's public higher education sector. Even though state transfer policy components did not show significant overall effects in the multi-level regression, the presence of common course numbering was associated with increased transfer probability among first generation students (to earn a bachelor's degree), compared with non-first generation students. Findings from the case studies center on four main areas: 1) the role of academic and transfer advising, 2) data use for decision support with respect to improving students' progress toward transfer, 3) leadership strategies for developing and assessing interventions to increase transfer, and 4) the role of state policies in framing and supporting colleges to improve students' upward transfer rates. This dissertation identifies some promising strategies, interventions, and practices among colleges with above-average transfer rates compared with colleges with average transfer rates. While colleges have implemented a range of interventions to improve supports for upward transfer, such as mandatory student advising, transfer fairs and transfer advising programs, there is still considerable room for improvement. Even among the better-performing colleges, too many students, particularly those most at risk of not transferring, may not have sufficient, coordinated supports to successfully complete transfer from their lower-division courses to upper-division coursework leading to a bachelor's degree. [1] "2/4 transfer" is an abbreviated term for upward transfer by community college or lower-division students to a bachelor's degree program or baccalaureate-granting institution. Institutions that primarily award associate's degrees are generally two-year institutions, based on the model of completion of an associate's degree program in two years. Baccalaureate-granting institutions and programs are generally modeled to be completed in four years, and may be called four-year institutions. [2] Georgia does not have community colleges. Rather, the University System of Georgia has 15 "access institutions" called state colleges that are primarily associates' degree granting institutions, and most offer limited baccalaureate degrees. My case study institutions include two of these access institutions. Most of Florida's community colleges have their own baccalaureate degree programs in specialized occupational fields, including one of the case study colleges selected in that state. For simplicity, I refer to colleges as community colleges throughout the paper, though different institutions may offer some range of baccalaureate programs or be in the process of obtaining approval for a bachelor's degree program(s). [3] "Experimentation" may take the form of a grant-supported new initiative with an evaluation component that includes quasi-experimental design, or it may be more loosely structured as a new initiative or policy change designed to improve student success outcomes associated with transfer, accompanied by documentation and evaluation of the results. Research on innovation has emphasized how organizational teaming structures can support creative decision-making and the generation of new knowledge guiding change in values, beliefs, and behaviors in the organization (Nilsson, 2003). [4] College upward transfer rate for the fall 2006 first-time-in-college cohort was used as a basis for analysis finding outliers (+2 standard deviations), using state-level data (Florida and Washington used three year transfer rates, and Georgia used four-year transfer rates for the fall 2006 cohort). While the average-performing colleges selected in Florida and Washington were average performers according to state-level data on upward transfer rates, there is also evidence from the IPEDS data on transfer-out rates for first-time, full-time students that three-year transfer rates were rising from 2008-2011. [5] State articulation and transfer policies include several components, as catalogued by the Education Commission of the States (ECS) in 2001 and 2010 (imputed here for 2005-06, two years after BPS 2003 students' postsecondary entry). ECS transfer policy components are: presence of articulation and transfer legislation; cooperative agreements between institutions and/or departments at 2- and 4-year institutions; transfer data reporting to state higher education commissions, departments, and authorities; transfer incentives and rewards (such as priority admission and scholarships); presence of a statewide course articulation guide; statewide common core or general transferable curriculum; and common course numbering (across two and four-year institutions).

Additionally, demographic variables (age, gender, ethnicity, financial aid eligibility), pre-enrollment variables (transfer GPA, transferable credits, Core-to-Core participation, educational intent, class standing, and community college attended), and enrollment variables (enrollment status, GPA trend, credits per semester, number of semester enrollments, and final GPA) were examined in order to determine whether they had any validity in predicting baccalaureate degree attainment. The study used an institutional case study design with historical data as the foundation for a multivariate analysis. The study population included 5419 students who transferred to Temple University between the Fall 1998 and Spring 2002 semesters. from one of eleven local community colleges that participated in Temple's Core-to-Core transfer program. A causal-comparative methodology was used to study the two groups - persisters and non-persisters. Descriptive statistics provided a picture of each group of students, while Chi-square and logistic regression analyses were used to determine the demographic, pre-enrollment, and enrollment variables that had the strongest ability to predict academic persistence. The Chi-square analyses presented a very detailed picture of the persisters and non-persisters. As a group, enrollment variables were the strongest predictors of baccalaureate degree attainment. However, the independent variables that were most significant and also the most meaningful were the number of semesters for which a student registered, final GPA, enrollment status (full-time/part-time), average number of credits per semester, GPA trend, and financial aid eligibility. A logistic regression analyses was then used to examine the predictive factors for baccalaureate degree attainment after eliminating several variables due to multicollinearity concerns and due to the complexity introduced with variables containing multiple nominal responses. The results were highly significant with 22.6% of the variance accounted for, indicating that the students who have a higher probability of graduating demonstrate a pattern of increasing GPA from initial transfer to graduation, have a higher transfer GPA, attend Temple University on a full-time basis, have taken advantage of Temple's Core-to-Core transfer program are eligible for financial aid, and are female.

Book excerpt: This study focused on community college transfer students and sought to determine the extent to which their baccalaureate degree attainment in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields of study can be predicted by their demographic characteristics, precollege academic preparation, and their engagement in a wide range of domains while in college. The study used data drawn from the Educational Longitudinal Study (ELS:2002) to examine the demographic background and college experiences of 1,761 community college transfer students. Astin's (1993) theory of involvement, or the Input-Environment-Output (I-E-O) model, was adopted as the guiding theoretical framework. In this study, the input variables included background characteristics (i.e., gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status (SES)) and precollege academic preparation (grade point average (GPA) in high school and high school preparation in math and science). The environmental variables consisted of students' 1) engagement with active learning experiences (i.e., using school library services for coursework and participation in the community-based project and the mentoring program); 2) interactions with faculty and advisors (i.e., talking with faculty about academic matters outside of class, meeting with advisor about academic plans, and research with faculty outside of program requirement); and 3) participation in enriching educational practices (i.e., internship, study abroad, culminating senior experience, and volunteer service). Finally, output (O) represented community college transfer students' degree attainment in STEM. Quantitative analyses, including descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, independent samples t-tests, and sequential logistic regression, were conducted to analyze the data. A sequential logistic regression model was used to examine the background characteristics, precollege academic preparation, and college engagement variables that predict STEM baccalaureate attainment among community college transfer students. The results of this study suggest that the background and precollege characteristics, including race (being Asian) and high school GPA, and college engagement, including working on coursework at the library and participation in the community-based project, research project with faculty, and culminating senior experience were predictors of the baccalaureate degree attainment in STEM among community college transfer students. It is imperative that higher education institutions including both community colleges and 4-year universities take efforts to 1) examine the experience of Asian students, 2) provide academic support and motivation to students with low academic performance in high school, and 3) create opportunities and promote students' participation in the community-based project, research with faculty, and culminating senior experience. In addition, future studies could investigate the following topics, including 1) the college experiences and STEM degree attainment of transfer students against those of native students at the 4-year institution, 2) the experience of community college transfer students with school library, the community-based project, the research opportunity with faculty, and culminating senior project through in depth qualitative inquiry, 3) the experience of a cohort of community college beginners, and 4) students' external demands and STEM choice.
