Book excerpt: Sometime after this, two of my children came home from school and said that their homework involved the tracing of their ancestral lineage to the farthest point. This set off my intellectual machine into forward drive. I knew all my ancestors back to the fourth generation, but with their requests, I wanted to go much further. I knew that my great-grandmothers maiden name was Barrett, and I always like to read poems by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, so I went to my library and looked her up but did not get anywhere, so I told them of all my great-grandparents down to them from four different angles. This satisfied the school for the homework assignment, but it did not satisfy my ego. The following week, I went to Strand Book Store on Broadway, in New York City, where my friend Mr. Bass was quite helpful. He sent me to an aged collection of books, and after one hours search, I found a book that contained the diary of Elizabeth Barrett Browning for the years 183031. I paid for it and went back to work at the bank where I worked for many years. Before I left that bank, I made sure to look at certain dates and occurrences, and bingo, I came to December 1831, during the slave rebellion in Jamaica under the leadership of Samuel Sharpe, now one of Jamaicas national heroes. When I read that her fathers estate was not destroyed, I almost went ballistic. I did not know that her father was a Jamaican, born on the hillside overlooking the city of Montego Bay in the parish of St. James. My grandfather always said to me that all the Barrett family are one, and that most of them lived in St. James and Trelawny Parishes. Those in St. Elizabeth always go to visit the other families all over the island because they always like to keep in touch from the days of slavery down to the present time. Putting everything in perspective, it was an eye-opener to me.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The West Indies offer so much more than sun, sand, and shopping. This sweeping arc of islands, which runs from Cuba to Grenada and includes the Virgin Islands, teems with a rich diversity of plant and animal life. Up to 40 percent of the plants in some forests are found nowhere else on earth, while the West Indian flyway is a critical link in the migratory routes of many birds. In A Birder's West Indies, Roland Wauer takes you on an island-by-island journey of discovery. He describes the unique natural features of each island and recounts his often fascinating experiences in seeking out the nearly 400 species of birds known in the West Indies. His accounts give insight into the birds' habitats, status, and ecology and record some of the threats posed by human activities. For readers planning trips to the West Indies, Wauer also includes helpful, up-to-date facts about the best times to travel, the kinds of entry and customs systems to expect, the money exchange services available, and general information about weather, food, and accommodations. Filling a unique niche among current guides, A Birder's West Indies offers both professional ornithologists and avocational bird watchers a chance to compare notes and experiences with an expert observer. And for readers who haven't yet visited the islands, Wauer's fluid prose and lovely color photographs will be the next-best thing to being there—and an irresistible invitation to go.

Book excerpt: The birth of the Caribbean Geological Conference in 1955 was a landmark in the search for geoscientific knowledge in the region. The proceedings of this conference continue to uncover many aspects of the Caribbean that remain virtually untouched and address questions that remain unanswered. This volume reports the most recent research on Caribbean geology, presented at the Fifteenth Caribbean Geological Conference held in 1998. The 24 research papers shed new light in the areas of plate tectonics, structural geology, metamorphic and igneous petrology, paleontology, biostratigraphy, economic geology, geochemistry, mineralogy, geologic hazards and geoscience education.

Tavares is the powerful and highly visible face of a worldwide HIV/AIDS donor foundation. Shes in charge of funding in an effort to fight the disease, and shell stop at nothing to get what she wants. Somebody has other plans for Tavares, however. Just after landing at the airport, she is shot and killed. Her attacker not only commits murder; he also escapes with two bags belonging to his victim. Officials are left with many questions: Who murdered this powerful woman? Was the crime really about her, or was it about the contents of her luggage? So begins a whirlwind adventure into the depths of Caribbean politics and crooked pharmaceutical sales. Men of power now battle the powerless for information that only a dead woman knew. Greed and corruption rule the streets as the AIDS epidemic continues to spread, and criminals take control of secrets once held by Tavares. But is there a way to stop those who would do harm in a place where no rule is sacred?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition to sharing the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, Haiti and the Dominican Republic share a complicated and at times painful history. Yet Transnational Hispaniola shows that there is much more to the two nations’ relationship than their perceived antagonism. Rejecting dominant narratives that reinforce opposition between the two sides of the island, contributors to this volume highlight the connections and commonalities that extend across the border, mapping new directions in Haitianist and Dominicanist scholarship. Exploring a variety of topics including European colonialism, migration, citizenship, sex tourism, music, literature, political economy, and art, contributors demonstrate that alternate views of Haitian and Dominican history and identity have existed long before the present day. From a moving section on passport petitions that reveals the familial, friendship, and communal networks across Hispaniola in the nineteenth century to a discussion of the shared music traditions that unite the island today, this volume speaks of an island and people bound together in a myriad of ways. Complete with reflections and advice on teaching a transnational approach to Haitian and Dominican studies, this agenda-setting volume argues that the island of Hispaniola and its inhabitants should be studied in a way that contextualizes differences, historicizes borders, and recognizes cross-island links.
