Book excerpt: Excerpt from Suggestions for Courses in History in Junior Colleges The Department of History in the University of California is greatly interested in the courses which are being ofiered in the fifth and sixth years in high schools in California, and makes the following suggestions in reply to the numerous inquiries which have been received from different parts of the State with regard to courses in History. The term Junior Colleges, which has been applied to the establishment of such courses in the fifth and sixth years, indicates that the work is expected to be of college rather than of high school standard. In no subject is there a wider difference of treatment between school and college than in History. In the high school, History must be taught, or at any rate has hitherto been generally taught, by the text-book method. In ambitious high schools with progressive teachers, the text-book method is largely supple mented, and in the fourth-year classes it is sometimes entirely abandoned. But in the great majority of high schools the text-book method still con tinnes to be used. In colleges and-universities the text-book method, even when supplemented from other sources, is now abandoned. The college student is freed from the idea that all the History he need know is shut between the covers of one text-book, and he is led to consult many books and to realize that training in History does not mean the acquisition of a certain amount of historical information, but that it is also a discipline in learning how much or how little is known about the past and in a study of the controversies as to the interpretation of the past. The college student breaks away from the idea of reciting upon a set lesson and is led to read, study, and compare. This change in the method of teaching, which at present generally takes place at the end of the four years in high school, when the student enters a college or a university, must begin-in the fifth year of the high school, or the first year of the junior college, if students from the junior colleges are to be admitted into the upper classes of the university. Otherwise such students will be hampered in their upper-class work by ignorance of the methods of instruction and research therein pursued, if they come at once from six years of recitation work in History into the upper-class work of a modern university. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Curriculum in Colleges As regards the sequence of historical subjects in college, I believe that as a general principle the order of chronological development should be followed where possible, and that a gen eral view of the field of history should ordinarily precede courses on special periods or movements. Such a view of history cannot, however, be advantageously given in a single course, but requires two or three years of consecutive study. If our students brought' to college any such acquaintance with the field of history as is possessed by the graduates of German gymnasia or French lyce'es, they might profitably begin at once with more intensive courses, but such, unfortunately, is far from being the case. In spite of the rapid advances in historical instruction in schools, it still remains true that the average freshman carries with him but a small viaticum of historical knowledge or training, and that his acquaintance with the world's history must for the most part still be gained in college. A general view of the development of civilized life is what he has the right, first of all, to demand, only this must not be so rapid as to render impossible any real under standing of the times studied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Course of Study in History and Literature, With Suggestions and Directions The conviction is steadily gaining ground that education must deal primarily with the relations of the pupil to his environment in nature and to the community life of which he finds himself a part. History and literature explain the social life. They form a necessary, means in every grade of schoolwork to the-end that the individual may understand his place in the home, the school and the larger social The demand for work in these subjects in the lower grades, as well as in the higher ones, makes it necessary that teach _ers should adjust-themselves to new conditions. To select material suitable for each stage of experience, and adapt that material to present needs, to make the work of the pupils grow out of their immediate interests, is possible only by a careful study both of child life and of the resources furnished by the treasures of the past. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of Pennsylvania, 1740-1893: The History of the University and Its Present Work The change from college to a university came about in a very peculiar way. In 1779, under the flimsy pre text that the foundation had been narrowed, the Assembly of Pennsylvania took away the charter of the college, and bestowed all its properties upon a new institution, The Uni versity of the State of Pennsylvania. But the old trustees still maintained an organization, and finally, in 1789, succeeded in getting back their charter. The two institutions now existed side by side for a time, but without profit. Accordingly, in 1791, upon mutual petition, they were united under a new charter as The University of Pennsylvania. This was the first American institution chartered as a University.
