Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Observations and Suggestions in Medicine The present volume terminates rather abruptly, because the stipulated number of pages was complete. I especially regret that I could not add a paper on other forms of Irritation besides those noticed in Chapters XLVI and XLVIII. It is a subject known in practice, but little treated Of in books. In a recent case, the ligatures inserted in an operation for lace rated perinaeum induced uterine haemorrhagy, and a state of things resembling and bordering on puerperal mania. The subject must be reserved for a second volume as must also the subject of the sporadic forms Of Puerperal Diseases, as well as some valuable papers by Dr. Tyler Smith, Mr. W. F. Barlow, and several other friends. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Makers of Modern Medicine The present volume is published at the solicitation of many friends who have read the articles contained in it as they appeared at various times in magazines and who deemed that they were worth preservation in a more per manent form. The only possible Claim for its filling a want lies in the fact that it presents these workers in medicine not only as scientists but also and Cspecially as men, in relation to their environment, social, religious and educational. I have to thank the editors Of the Messenger, Donahoe's Magazine, The Catholic World and the Records of the American Catholic Historical Society, for permission to reprint the articles which appeared in their periodicals. The Opening Chapter, The Making of Medicine, is an abstract from the introductory lecture of the course in the history of medicine at the Fordham University Medical School, New York. Much of the material for the article on the Irish School of Medicine was gathered for a lecture before the Historical Club of Johns Hopkins University and the District Medical Society of the District Of Columbia. The sketch of the life Of Dr. Jenner has not hitherto been published. All of the other articles have been considerably lengthened and revised. Book Synopsis The History of Medicine in Its Salient Features (Classic Reprint) by : Walter Libby
Download or read book The History of Medicine in Its Salient Features (Classic Reprint) written by Walter Libby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Medicine in Its Salient Features In the closing days of 1917 I was asked to give a course of lectures on the history of medicine. This book is the outcome of my attempt to comply with the request made at that time. The course of lectures, given in the first place in the early weeks of 1918, followed the lines of the present table of contents. My auditors were third-year students in one of the American Schools of Medicine, and the plan of presentation was more or less consciously dictated, at the start, by the recollection of what had challenged my curiosity and aroused my attention about the time I had attained a like standing as a student of medicine. Questions and class discussions evoked by the lectures in 1918 and the three subsequent years suggested, however, certain modifications of the initial treatment of the subject and indicated in what directions additions and elucidations were most desirable. Even at the outset I felt sure that the course would be of greater interest to the men if I could trace the development of medicine, however succinctly, from the earliest times till the present day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practice of Medicine IN offering this work to the medical public, the authors desire to state that the volume is the outcome of an attempt to view the practice of medicine simultaneously from the pathologic and therapeutic points of view. Whilst each author has written certain determinate portions of the book, there have been such careful joint consideration and dis cussion of the various subjects that there is a common responsibility, except in the very few places where final difference of Opinion is indi cated in the text either over initials or by the use of the pronoun I instead of we. He is in a new and strange place, and has assumed new duties. If some one would kindly tell him what to do, and how to do it, a great favor would be conferred, and a lasting debt of gratitude would be in curred. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Guide to the Practice of Medicine IN this Edition I have endeavoured to supplement the two previous Editions by additional details on important points, and to insert an account of some diseases formerly omitted. By using smaller type I have been enabled to do this without materially increasing the size of the book or altering the original plan. I trust it is still handy and practical.
