Book Synopsis The Barbary Macaque by : Julia E. Fa
Download or read book The Barbary Macaque written by Julia E. Fa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Barbary macaque (all too often mistakenly called an ape) was first brought to the attention of the Conservation Working Party of the Primate Society of Great Britain late 1979 when John Fa reported that 'surplus' animals were being sent from Gibraltar to dubious locations, such as an Italian safari park. Since there had been no scientific input into the Army's management of the monkey colony on Gibraltar, and there was concern about inbreeding, nutrition and health - about the long-term viability of the colony, it was felt that the Society could help. The Gibraltar Scientific Authority and the Army were very receptive to our offer and ideas, and this topic occupied successive chairmen over the last few years - Robin Dunbar and Richard Wrangham, myself and now Miranda Stevenson - with constant prompting and help from John Fa. Considerations soon extended to the status of the species as a whole, so that there have been three main aspects:- (1) the improved health of a larger self-sustaining population on Gibraltar, (2) the status and behavioural biology of natural populations in North Africa (Morocco and Algeria), and (3) the breeding achievements in European parks and zoos, and their potential for reintroduction to suitable areas in North Africa, along with other possibilities. Robin Dunbar organized the compilation of recommendations for managing the Gibraltar colony with regard to numbers, age-sex struc ture and behavioural relationships, with some observations on diet to avoid obesity and infertility.

Book Synopsis Text and Genre in Reconstruction by : Willard McCarty

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this broad-reaching, multi-disciplinary collection, leading scholars investigate how the digital medium has altered the way we read and write text. In doing so, it challenges the very notion of scholarship as it has traditionally been imagined. Incorporating scientific, socio-historical, materialist and theoretical approaches, this rich body of work explores topics ranging from how computers have affected our relationship to language, whether the book has become an obsolete object, the nature of online journalism, and the psychology of authorship. The essays offer a significant contribution to the growing debate on how digitization is shaping our collective identity, for better or worse. Text and Genre in Reconstruction will appeal to scholars in both the humanities and sciences and provides essential reading for anyone interested in the changing relationship between reader and text in the digital age.

Book Synopsis Cycle Infrastructure Design by : Great Britain. Department for Transport
Download or read book Cycle Infrastructure Design written by Great Britain. Department for Transport and published by Stationery Office Books (TSO). This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encouraging more people to cycle is increasingly being seen as a vital part of any local authority plan to tackle congestion, improve air quality, promote physical activity and improve accessibility. This design guide brings together and updates guidance previously available in a number of draft Local Transport Notes and other documents. Although the focus is the design of cycle infrastructure, parts of its advice are equally appropriate to improving conditions for pedestrians. Individual chapters cover: general design parameters; signing issues; network management; reducing vehicle speeds on cycle routes; bus and tram routes; cycle lanes; off-road cycle routes; junctions; cycle track crossings; cycle parking; public transport integration. A list of references and an appendix of related publications complete the book. It is hoped that, by bringing together relevant advice in a single document, this guide will make it easier for local authorities to decide what provision, if any, is required to encourage more people to cycle.
Book Synopsis Cognitive Training by : Tilo Strobach
Download or read book Cognitive Training written by Tilo Strobach and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-16 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a cutting edge international team of contributors to critically review the current knowledge regarding the effectiveness of training interventions designed to improve cognitive functions in different target populations. There is substantial evidence that cognitive and physical training can improve cognitive performance, but these benefits seem to vary as a function of the type and the intensity of interventions and the way training-induced gains are measured and analyzed. This book further fulfills the need for clarification of the mechanisms underlying cognitive and neural changes occurring after training. This book offers a comprehensive overview of empirical findings and methodological approaches of cognitive training research in different cognitive domains (memory, executive functions, etc.), types of training (working memory training, video game training, physical training, etc.), age groups (from children to young and older adults), target populations (children with developmental disorders, aging workers, MCI patients etc.), settings (laboratory-based studies, applied studies in clinical and educational settings), and methodological approaches (behavioral studies, neuroscientific studies). Chapters feature theoretical models that describe the mechanisms underlying training-induced cognitive and neural changes. Cognitive Training: An Overview of Features and Applications will be of interest to researchers, practitioners, students, and professors in the fields of psychology and neuroscience.

This book was released on 2012-04-02 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Planning Policy Framework 2012 sets out the Government's planning policies for England in achieving sustainable development and how these are expected to be applied. It sets out the requirements for the planning system only to the extent that it is relevant, proportionate and necessary to do so. It provides a framework within which local people and their accountable councils can produce their own distinctive local and neighbourhood plans, which reflect the needs and priorities of their communities. This Framework does not contain specific policies for nationally significant projects for which particular considerations apply. Divided into thirteen chapters, with three annexes, it looks at the following areas, including: building a competitive economy; ensuring town centre vitality; supporting a high quality communications infrastructure; delivering high quality homes; protecting the Green Belt; meeting the challenges of climate change, flooding and coastal change; conserving the natural and historic environments and facilitating the sustainable use of minerals.

This book was released on 2012-09-18 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shared use routes are designed to accommodate the movement of pedestrians and cyclists. This Local Transport Note (LTN) 1/12 focuses on routes within built-up areas where the predominant function of the route is for utility transport, and where use by pedestrians and cyclists is likely to be frequent. Shared use schemes require careful consideration. It provides advice on their planning, design and provision; suggests a scheme development process to help in deciding whether shared use is appropriate for any given situation; stresses the importance of high-quality inclusive design that addresses the needs of all users; places particular emphasis on involving users, residents and other stakeholders in the design process. This LTN 1/12 supersedes LTN 2/86 Shared Use by Cyclists and Pedestrians (ISBN 9780115507830). It should be read in conjunction with LTN 2/08 Cycle Infrastructure Design (DfT, 2008) and Inclusive Mobility - A Guide to Best Practice on Access to Pedestrian and Transport Infrastructure (DfT, 2002).
