Book Synopsis Sufficient Sacrifice by : Annette Valentine
Download or read book Sufficient Sacrifice written by Annette Valentine and published by Morgan James Publishing. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A father struggles to raise his daughter right as she comes of age in the 1960s in this moving conclusion to a multi-generational family trilogy. Simon Hagan’s life has been portrayed over several decades in Annette Valentine’s novels Eastbound From Flagstaff and Down to the Potter’s House. In Sufficient Sacrifice, he bears the burden of responsibility to give his child, Alexandra, the foundational strength she needs to navigate the bumpy road of her youthful years and the proverbial wings she needs to fly against the winds of young adulthood. With the goal of Sufficient Sacrifice elevating the power of a father’s love for his child, the story poses the question of whether Simon’s influence has diminished over time or been compromised by the eroding push of a determined woman. Simon, however, makes the necessary sacrifices. Having given all he had to give, Sufficient Sacrifice uniquely portrays his stunning and triumphant victory over Alexandra’s confusion and rebellion. The results land her on higher ground, enabling her to be more than conqueror. “Excellent!! An absolute treasure that recounts the warm and sometimes harsh realities of a family striving to maintain a high standard of living amidst currents of mediocrity.” —Becky Hadden Wise, educator, Carver Middle School, Spartanburg, South Carolina
Book Synopsis Our Sufficiency in Christ by : John MacArthur
Download or read book Our Sufficiency in Christ written by John MacArthur and published by Crossway. This book was released on 1998-07-10 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christ's divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness. —2 Peter 1:3 Pure Christianity needs no embellishment whatsoever. We find complete sufficiency in Christ and His provision for our needs. But too many Christians have bought in to the notion that all the spiritual resources we gain at the moment of salvation are not adequate to meet the real needs in today's complex world. So they look for something more—an emotionally exciting and self-edifying experience not found in God's Word. This failure to understand the sufficiency of Christ has opened the door to all kinds of worldy influences, causing many modern believers to mix biblical truths with seemingly helpful man-made methods such as mysticism and psychology. As a result, they wallow in a watered-down, pseudo-Christanity that has been drained of its vitality, effectiveness, and security. In this book John MacArthur exposes the main ways Christians have displaced their spiritual resources and explains how to avoid making the same error. It will make you newly aware of how completely God provides—and give you a renewed understanding of what it means to be "complete in Christ."
Book Synopsis Sacrifice and Modern Thought by : Julia Meszaros
Download or read book Sacrifice and Modern Thought written by Julia Meszaros and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-10-03 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sacrifice has always been central to the study of religion yet attempts to understand and assess the concept have usually been controversial. The present book, which is the result of several years of interdisciplinary collaboration, suggests that in many ways the fascination with sacrifice has its roots in modernity itself. Theological developments following the Reformation, the rediscovery of Greek tragedies, and the encounter with the practice of human sacrifice in the Americas triggered a complex and passionate debate in the sixteenth century which has never since abated. Contributors to this volume, leading experts from theology, anthropology, and literary and cultural studies, describe and discuss how this modern fascination for the topic of sacrifice has evolved, how it has shaped theological debate, the literary imagination, and anthropological theory. Individual chapters discuss in depth major theological trajectories, theories of sacrifice including those of Marcel Mauss and René Girard, and current feminist criticism. They engage with sacrifice in the context of religious and philosophical thought, works of literature and film. They explore different yet overlapping aspects of modernity's obsession with sacrifice. The book does not intend to impose a single narrative over all these diverse contributions but brings them into a conversation around a common centre.

Book Synopsis Sacrifice Imagined by : Douglas Hedley
Download or read book Sacrifice Imagined written by Douglas Hedley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-09-08 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sacrifice Imagined is an original exploration of the idea of sacrifice by one of the world's preeminent philosophers of religion. Despisers of religion have poured scorn upon the idea of sacrifice as an index of the irrational and wicked in religious practice. Nor does its secularised form seem much more appealing. One need only think of the appalling cult of sacrifice in numerous totalitarian regimes of the twentieth century. Yet sacrifice remains a part of our cultural and intellectual 'imaginary'. Hedley proposes good reasons to think that issues of global conflict and the ecological crisis highlight the continuing relevance of the topic of sacrifice for contemporary culture. The subject of sacrifice has been decisively influenced by two books: Girard's The Violence and the Sacred and Burkert's Homo Necans. Both of these are theories of sacrifice as violence. Hedley's book challenges both of these highly influential theories and presents a theory of sacrifice as renunciation of the will. His guiding influences in this are the much misunderstood Joseph de Maistre and the Cambridge Platonists.
