Download or read book Measuring African Development written by Morten Jerven and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chief economist for the World Bank's Africa region, Shanta Devarajan, delivered a devastating assessment of the capacity of African states to measure development in his 2013 article "Africa's Statistical Tragedy". Is there a "statistical tragedy" unfolding in Africa now? If so then examining the roots of the problem of provision of statistics in poor economies is certainly of great importance. This book on measuring African development in the past and in the present draws on the historical experience of colonial French West Africa, Ghana, Sudan, Mauritania and Tanzania and the more contemporary experiences of Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The authors each reflect on the changing ways statistics represent African economies and how they are used to govern them. This bookw as published as a special issue of the Canadian Journal of Development Studies.
Book Synopsis Institutions and Macroeconomic Policies in Resource-Rich Arab Economies by : Kamiar Mohaddes
Download or read book Institutions and Macroeconomic Policies in Resource-Rich Arab Economies written by Kamiar Mohaddes and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-22 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over eighty years the Arab region has been deriving massive wealth from its natural resources. Nevertheless, its economic performance has been at the mercy of ebbs and flows of oil prices and its resources have been slowly depleting. The two critical questions are why and how Arab countries might escape the oil curse. Institutions and Macroeconomic Policies in Resource-Rich Arab Economies focuses on the unique features of the Arab world to explain the disappointing outcomes of macroeconomic policy. It explores the interaction between oil and institutions to draw policy recommendations on how Arab countries can best exploit their oil revenues to avoid the resource curse. Case studies and contributions from experts provide an understanding of macroeconomic institutions (including their underlying rules, procedures and institutional arrangements) in oil-rich Arab economies and of their political economy environment, which has largely been overlooked in previous research. Institutions and Macroeconomic Policies in Resource-Rich Arab Economies offers novel macroeconomic policy propositions for exchange rate regimes, fiscal policy and oil wealth distribution that is more consistent with macroeconomic stability and fiscal sustainability. These policy reforms, if implemented successfully, could go a long way in helping the resource-rich countries of the Arab region and elsewhere to avoid the oil curse.

Download or read book Problems of Economic Growth and Planning: The Sudan Example written by H. Güsten and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early 1961, the IFO-Institut fUr Wirtschaftsforschung (Institute for Economic Research) established an "African Studies Centre" to conduct research into the economic and political problems of developing countries, with special reference to African nations south of the Sahara. Its activities are not confined to the field of economics. The emphasis is on inter-disci plinary cooperation and synthesis. Within the framework of the East Afri can Research Programme, which is supported by the Fritz Thyssen Foun dation, agricultural, sociological and legal studies have appeared or are in progress. In the field of economics, problems of economic planning are among the subjects receiving particular attention. Two issues of "Afrika Studien" deal with institutions and instruments of planning: N. AHMAD/ E. BECHER: Entwiddungsbanken und -gesellschaften in Tropisch Afrika (Development Banks and Companies in Tropical Africa), Afrika-Studien No. 1, and: R. GUSTEN/H. HELMSCHROTT: Volkswirtschaftliche Gesamtrech nungen in Tropisch Afrika (National Accounts in Tropical Africa), Afrika Studien No. 3. It is hoped that a comprehensive review of methods and results of economic planning in East Africa will be forthcoming in this series in the course of 1967. The present study was made subsequent to investigations conducted by a research team under my guidance in 1961/62; the author of this study, ROLF GUSTEN, was a member of this team.
