Book excerpt: This book is a good practical handbook for every manufacturing leaders and it is based on proven and successful manufacturing transformation practices, on how to get a manufacturing organization out of an extreme operational crisis (or nearing a closure). Transforming an organization in crisis and turning it around from a manufacturing crisis and finally to be able to achieve global competitiveness in manufacturing operations in any country. This book is based on extensive work experience, learning from failures and successes, experimentations, and proven approaches by the author himself. It references to the author’s various successful manufacturing transformations achieved at large-scale multi-national manufacturing organizations and how the author re-positioned those organizations into becoming a globally competitive operation. If an organization is always thinking about global competitiveness, and constantly driving its organization towards world class efficiencies, delivering the sustainable competitiveness in cost and with the best lead-times, it is almost impossible to get eliminated by any other competitions globally. The manufacturing organizations that slowly starts to slip away from being at world class efficiencies and its metrics start losing its global competitiveness, in cost, lead time and productivity will not be able to compete with the global competitions. These are the organizations that will easily get into a manufacturing crisis, loses its competitiveness and finally it loses its total business to its competitors. These companies will ultimately get wiped out of the business. This book is also about reimagining the manufacturing industries to achieve global competitiveness by the successful adoption of greater digital technologies of a connected factory to increase efficiency, speed and agility. This requires the ability to be able to rapidly transit into the new smart manufacturing paradigm with how to achieve the status of Smart Manufacturing, Factory of the Future and to be quick in responding to the demanding market changes with the digitally connected operations and the marketplace. A detailed step by step approach is clearly explained and how to overcome those implementation challenges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world progresses toward Industry 4.0, and manufacturers are challenged to successfully navigate this unique digital journey. To some, digitalization is a golden opportunity; to others, it is a necessary evil. But to optimist and pessimist alike, there is a widespread puzzlement over the practical details of digitalization. To many manufacturers, digital transformation is a vague and confusing concept they nevertheless must grapple with in order to survive the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The proliferation of digital manufacturing technologies adds to the confusion, leaving many manufacturers perplexed and unprepared, with little real insight into how emerging technologies can help them sustain a competitive edge in their markets. This book effectively conveys Siemens's knowledge and experience through a concept called "Smart Digital Manufacturing," a stepwise approach to realizing the promise of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The Smart Digital Manufacturing roadmap provides guidance and enables low-risk, high-reward adoption of new manufacturing software technologies through a series of tipping-point investment decisions that result in optimized manufacturing performance. The book provides readers with a clear understanding of what digital technology has to offer them, and how and when to invest in these essential components of tomorrow?s factories. René Wolf is Senior Vice President of Manufacturing Operations Management Software for Siemens Digital Industries Software, a business unit of the Siemens Digital Factory Division. Raffaello Lepratti is Vice President of Business Development and Marketing for Siemens Digital Industries Software.

Book excerpt: What is Digital Transformation, why is it so important and why do so many transformation projects fail? More importantly, what can we do to make our transformation initiative succeed? These are a few of the profound questions that we seek to answer in this book. The anomaly between the number of digital transformation being undertaken and the high failure rate may be due to not enough transformation initiatives taking a holistic approach that encompasses people, culture, organisations, processes, business strategy and objectives into the overall mix instead they are focusing largely on the technology. Therefore in this book we contemplate a holistic approach to digital transformation across the entire spectrum of the business from the perspective of an enterprise or manufacturer. Hence we start with people, culture and the need for agile business development when transforming processes, products and services or business models. We examine the how and why we align and tightly couple business objectives to transformation initiatives. Importantly, we examine the need for company-wide collaboration and integration of data, knowledge, processes and systems and the huge benefits initiatives such as data-democratization can deliver. Then we delve deeper into the specific drivers for successful transformation across a very broad range of business functions from the perspective of IT and Operations, Finance, HR, Sales & Marketing, Manufacturing, Inventory, Supply chain and Post-sales service. We also examine how technology and processes such as the IoT and advanced data analysis have brought about Industry 4.0 and the Smart Factory not through technology upgrades and point solutions but through a holistic approach to digital transformation. A holistic approach to digital transformation, places people, culture, knowledge, capabilities, and decision-making as the pillars supporting the overall organisation's business strategy, objectives and mission values that are built upon a foundation of technology and processes. Successful digital transformation initiatives do not lose their focus on the overarching business strategy and company objectives being the goal, it's not about technology it is about creating new business value at the strategic level. And in this book we will show you how to do it.What is Digital Transformation, why is it so important and why do so many transformation projects fail? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While it is possible for economies to grow based on abundant land or natural resources, more often structural change-the shift of resources from low-productivity to high-productivity sectors-is the key driver of economic growth. Structural transformation is vital for Africa. The region's much-lauded growth turnaround since 1995 has been the result of making fewer economic policy mistakes, robust commodity prices, and new discoveries of natural resources. At the same time, Africa's economic structure has changed very little. Primary commodities and natural resources still account for the bulk of the region's exports. Industry is most often the leading driver of structural transformation. Africa's experience with industrialization over the past thirty years has been disappointing. In 2010, sub-Saharan Africa's average share of manufacturing value added in GDP was ten per cent, unchanged from the 1970s. Actually, the share of medium- and high-tech goods in manufacturing production has been falling since the mid-1990s. Per capita manufactured exports are less than ten per cent of the developing country average. Consequently, Africa's industrial transformation has yet to take place. This book presents results of comparative country-based research that sought to answer a seemingly simple but puzzling question: why is there so little industry in Africa? It brings together detailed country case studies of industrial policies and industrialization outcomes in eleven countries, conducted by teams of national researchers in partnership with international experts on industrial development. It provides the reader with the most comprehensive description and analysis available to date of the contemporary industrialization experience in low-income Africa. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how China’s industrial transformation and development depend on technology and innovation and how considerations about issues associated with technology and innovation may affect China’s development strategies. Market-oriented reforms initiated four decades ago have constantly fueled a high speed of development in China. The country’s industrial structure has experienced rapid evolution. In the meantime, especially in the general context of globalization, the country has also opened to foreign trade and foreign direct investment, transforming itself from a virtually completely closed economy into a major trading nation and the largest developing country destination for foreign direct investment in the world. Technology is thought to be one of the key driving forces that shape the transformation of the Chinese economy. Owing to different speeds of innovation and technology diffusion, uneven development is one major issue in the process of China’s industrial transformation under new trends of globalization. Substantial disparities across different Chinese regions, e.g., the gaps in regional industrial development and those in incomes and living standards, have been one prominent feature of China and are (needless to say) closely related to different speeds of innovation and technology diffusion. The relationship between technology diffusion, innovation, and industrial development is an important yet complicated issue that deserves careful study. Considerations related to technology and innovation play a crucial role in leading and shaping China’s development strategies and routes. Sustainable development of China creates strong pressures for continuous transforming, upgrading, and restructuring of the Chinese economy, and in all of these processes, innovation and technology diffusion play a fundamental role. The book presents to the interested reader facts, thoughts, models, empirical results, and discussions that shed light on those issues.

But actually its is essential reading for all who are faced with digital transformation. It offers a valuable reflection on knowledge developed and experience accumulated in daily practice, focusing on the approach to contemporary digital business challenges. Written in understandable language and with a powerful, logical structure, it has become a very accessible book that remains fascinating from beginning to end. It teaches you to understand topics that matter such as the need for digital transformation, the connection with business strategy and the essential differences in starting positions between organizations. What to do next is made concrete and practical by identifying five necessary digital breakthroughs and working them out into clear goals, which should be included in the change cycle as part of your digital strategy. The phase model presented includes three distinct steps - from product focus in the first phase to customer orientation in the second phase, followed by a third phase in which the customer is at the center. The book describes what is required to take these steps - the checklist that is included provides organizations with direction. This helps in setting up a strategy and developing an effective roadmap for organizations to transform. "The book 'Successful Digital Transformation' reads like a modern fairy tale. It's clever how the essence of the field of digital transformation is captured in barely 100 pages. But the theme has also been made very practical, the underlying topics (such as data management, enterprise architecture, change management) have been tied together and explained in a comprehensible way. I think the book fills a great need, because many books and articles on this topic are either full of buzzwords that are not further described, or lapse into academic jargon that is incomprehensible to the average reader. This book sits nicely between academia and practice, without falling into compromises." - Frank Harmsen - Associate Professor of Digital Transformation, Maastricht University Bron: Flaptekst, uitgeversinformatie.

Book excerpt: The debate on industrial policy has been in full swing among the academic circles in recent years. The crux of this debate is not whether China needs industrial policies, but rather, the kind of industrial policies it wants. Given the profound changes to the domestic and international environments, and institutional background during China's industrial development, industrial policies must be able to make up for 'market failures,' while avoiding 'government failures'. To this end, it is suggested to establish a 'market-friendly' industrial policy system dominated by functional industrial policies, in accordance with the requirements of building an 'interactive and cooperative' government-market relationship to help transform and upgrade China's industries.
