Book excerpt: 110 Strategies for Success in College and Life offers students clear presentations of 110 strategies to guide them through to college graduation and beyond. These principles are derived from numerous research studies from a wide range of areas within psychology, as well as from the authors’ many years of experience as college professors, researchers, and student advisors. This book closes the gap between scientific knowledge and its application to college success. Topics include information processing and learning; critical thinking and decision making; identifying and achieving goals; managing time, money and energy; reading and writing effectively; reducing test anxiety; knowing thyself; and preparing for a career. The latest research findings are presented. It is a valuable guide for freshman, whether coming right out of high school or after a hiatus of years working and/or taking care of a family. This book is particularly appropriate for minority and first generation college students who may have fewer mentors to help them along the college path. Each chapter offers case studies of successful students to serve as role models. The focus of the book is on the practical application of the strategies in the student’s daily life within a framework of flexibility, integrity, and balance.

Book excerpt: STUDENT SUCCESS VALIDATES WHAT WE TEACHERS DO. Yet, not all students succeed. Many give up helplessly, reaching unnecessarily the end of their ropes. We teachers spent years honing our craft, figuring out ways to reach out, to connect, and to positively affect the lives of our students, not only while in college, but well beyond the often-treacherous college years. Paving the students' path toward a thriving university life and a rewarding career, therefore, gives meaning to what we do for a living. The art of learning has indeed transformed. Both the Internet and distinct generational preferences of our students have introduced new paradigms in post secondary education. Whereas years ago, the teacher and the local university library were the main repositories of knowledge, today's students can use the Internet - indeed the libraries of the entire planet to instantly locate the information they need, often effortlessly from the comfort of a couch! What the students want is not mere information; they need and demand practical knowledge and how information is applied. To be a successful teacher, one must constantly experiment with new and more effective learning strategies that combine best practices in learning. In this book, the authors have assembled numerous strategies and techniques for academic success. We have emptied our bags of tricks onto these pages. We have witnessed how these strategies rejuvenate our students' university experience. By authoring this book, we pass on to you our student the intricacies of the art of learning. From the role of motivation to memory retention to the ins and outs of connecting with your teachers, we have provided not only what is needed to succeed academically, but also the evidence for our recommendations. We offer you this book not only for us to make sense of our professional lives, but also for you to make sense of yours.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Universities around the world are under increasing pressure to maintain high levels of graduation and to make study processes as efficient as possible, with teachers and students struggling to meet the expectations placed upon them as a result. The Psychology of Study Success in Universities asks whether it is possible to meet these demands at the same time as protecting the well-being of students. Drawing on an extensive and detailed analysis of study success in universities in Finland, the authors of this thought-provoking work argue that universities should be more concerned with students’ satisfaction and place greater weight on students’ perceptions of the elements that enhance or hinder their success. The book provides a multi-dimensional picture of the student-related and teaching-related factors that promote study success. Giving voice to graduate students, including those enrolled on a PhD, the authors look at the resources that students have at their disposal in order to establish what inspires and motivates the students, what slows them down, and what kinds of experiences students have of successful studies. Määttä and Uusiautti present a wealth of high-quality research showing that good teaching and successful study processes can be secured by immediate and caring interaction, flexible and student-centred teaching and supervision, and interdisciplinary collaboration between teachers. The Psychology of Study Success in Universities is essential reading for academics, researchers and postgraduate students in the fields of education and psychology, as well as for those interested in positive psychology, student well-being and pedagogical studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical solutions for improving higher education opportunities for disadvantaged students Too many disadvantaged college students in America do not complete their coursework or receive any college credential, while others earn degrees or certificates with little labor market value. Large numbers of these students also struggle to pay for college, and some incur debts that they have difficulty repaying. The authors provide a new review of the causes of these problems and offer promising policy solutions. The circumstances affecting disadvantaged students stem both from issues on the individual side, such as weak academic preparation and financial pressures, and from institutional failures. Low-income students disproportionately attend schools that are underfunded and have weak performance incentives, contributing to unsatisfactory outcomes for many students. Some solutions, including better financial aid or academic supports, target individual students. Other solutions, such as stronger linkages between coursework and the labor market and more structured paths through the curriculum, are aimed at institutional reforms. All students, and particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, also need better and varied pathways both to college and directly to the job market, beginning in high school. We can improve college outcomes, but must also acknowledge that we must make hard choices and face difficult tradeoffs in the process. While no single policy is guaranteed to greatly improve college and career outcomes, implementing a number of evidence-based policies and programs together has the potential to improve these outcomes substantially.
