Quantum confinement effects, interfacial interactions and other substrate effects can be engineered to acquire desired physical properties in heterostructures. A brief introduction of the correlated electron problem and thin film research is presented in Chapter 1. To create and characterize complex thin films, precise tools for film growth and electron property measurement are needed. We provide an experimentalist's introduction of two major experimental tools in this dissertation: Angle-resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) for electronic property measurement (Chapter 2) and Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) for thin film growth (Chapter 3). Monolayer (1ML) FeSe films on SrTiO$_3$ (STO) substrates demonstrate a large increase in electron doping and superconducting transition temperature. This is an example of how thin films and interfaces provide new opportunities in correlated electron systems. We use our MBE-ARPES chamber to grow and study FeSe films on various substrates in order to elucidate the reason behind this superconductivity enhancement. In Chapter 4, we describe the fabrication and study of 1ML FeSe/TiO$_2$ (rutile). By comparing 1ML FeSe/TiO$_2$ to 1ML FeSe/STO and other superconductors in iron chalcogenide family, we argue that doping and interfacial electron-phonon interaction are the two key factors to the enhanced superconductivity. In Chapter 5, we further study the origin of the doping effects in 1ML FeSe/titanate thin films using a versatile platform: 1ML FeSe/LaTiO$_3$ (LTO) /STO. To our surprise, although the charge density of two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) on LTO/STO can be increased to a few times higher than FeSe carrier density, the doping of 1ML FeSe on top of LTO/STO heterostructure does not increase. This provides strong confinements to theories that aim to explain the doping of 1ML FeSe/titanates. Our research on 1ML FeSe with TiO$_2$ and LTO/STO as substrates helps researchers understand the origin of increased superconductivity in this material system and provides insights on how to apply similar mechanisms to other materials. We switch gears and discuss the substrate effects for TiSe$_2$/TiO$_2$ heterostructure in Chapter 6. TiSe$_2$, both as bulk single crystals and as thin films on graphene, is in an ordered charge density wave (CDW) state at low temperatures. We find that hexagonal TiSe$_2$ can be grown epitaxially on tetragonal TiO$_2$ substrates, and the resulting films show large electron doping and no CDW order. Our further experiments demonstrate that the doping and suppression of CDW order is due to Se vacancies, which are created by substrate induced change in the film growth condition. This indirect substrate effect of doping may be applied to other transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) films on transition metal oxide (TMO) substrates as a powerful way to tune the electrical and optical properties of such heterostructures. This dissertation is summarized in Chapter 7, where we also propose possible future investigations based on this work. With quantitative understanding and precise control of thin film growth in MBE and advanced \textit{in situ} ARPES for measurements, our strength in creating and understanding correlated electron systems will be further improved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a modern introduction to the growth, characterization, and physics of iron-based superconducting thin films. Iron pnictide and iron chalcogenide compounds have become intensively studied key materials in condensed matter physics due to their potential for high temperature superconductivity. With maximum critical temperatures of around 60 K, the new superconductors rank first after the celebrated cuprates, and the latest announcements on ultrathin films promise even more. Thin film synthesis of these superconductors began in 2008 immediately after their discovery, and this growing research area has seen remarkable progress up to the present day, especially with regard to the iron chalcogenides FeSe and FeSe1-xTex, the iron pnictide BaFe2-xCoxAs2 and iron-oxyarsenides. This essential volume provides comprehensive, state-of-the-art coverage of iron-based superconducting thin films in topical chapters with detailed information on thin film synthesis and growth, analytical film characterization, interfaces, and various aspects on physics and materials properties. Current efforts towards technological applications and functional films are outlined and discussed. The development and latest results for monolayer FeSe films are also presented. This book serves as a key reference for students, lecturers, industry engineers, and academic researchers who would like to gain an overview of this complex and growing research area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young's modulus, linear thermal expansion coefficient, stress, microhardness, wear resistance, adhesion and cohesion strength for thin films of As2S3, As2Se3, Ge28Sb12Se60, Ge33As12Se55 and Ge36As4S60 chalcogenide glasses thermally deposited onto unheated zinc selenide substrates have been determined. The interrelationship between mechanical parameters of the films has been studied. Wear resistance of chalcogenide films has been found to be related to the adhesive force and mechanical parameters used in the formal theory of glass strength. The effect of the additional stress arising in result of the temperature increase under friction on the wear resistance of the films has been shown.

Book excerpt: This five-volume handbook focuses on processing techniques, characterization methods, and physical properties of thin films (thin layers of insulating, conducting, or semiconductor material). The editor has composed five separate, thematic volumes on thin films of metals, semimetals, glasses, ceramics, alloys, organics, diamonds, graphites, porous materials, noncrystalline solids, supramolecules, polymers, copolymers, biopolymers, composites, blends, activated carbons, intermetallics, chalcogenides, dyes, pigments, nanostructured materials, biomaterials, inorganic/polymer composites, organoceramics, metallocenes, disordered systems, liquid crystals, quasicrystals, and layered structures. Thin films is a field of the utmost importance in today's materials science, electrical engineering and applied solid state physics; with both research and industrial applications in microelectronics, computer manufacturing, and physical devices. Advanced, high-performance computers, high-definition TV, digital camcorders, sensitive broadband imaging systems, flat-panel displays, robotic systems, and medical electronics and diagnostics are but a few examples of miniaturized device technologies that depend the utilization of thin film materials. The Handbook of Thin Films Materials is a comprehensive reference focusing on processing techniques, characterization methods, and physical properties of these thin film materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Special Issue “Synthesis and Modification of Nanostructured Thin Films” highlights the recent progress in thin film synthesis/modification and characterization. New methods are reviewed for the synthesis and/or modification of thin films based on laser, magnetron, chemical, and other techniques. The obtained thin nanostructures are characterized by complex and complementary techniques. We think that most of proposed methods can be directly applied in production, but some others still need further elaboration for long-term prospective applications in lasers, optics, materials, electronics, informatics, telecommunications, biology, medicine, and probably many other domains. The Guest Editor and the MDPI staff are therefore pleased to offer this Special Issue to interested readers, including graduate and PhD students as well as postdoctoral researchers, but also to the entire community interested in the field of nanomaterials. We share the conviction that this can serve as a useful tool for updating the literature, but also to aid in the conception of new production and/or research programs. There is plenty of room for further dedicated R&D advances based on new instruments and materials under development.
