Book excerpt: It’s surprising how one little boy, and a holiday, can bring a family together. Five-year-old Spike has a sure-fire cure for any illness: ice cream. He’s also picked out the cure for being fatherless: fun-loving pediatrician Chad Markham, who just moved in next door. But Spike’s serious-minded Aunt Jill, who’s adopting her orphaned nephew, sees heartbreak ahead. Unable to bear children after a disastrous pregnancy that destroyed her first marriage, Jill can’t help liking the handsome doctor. But she’ll never be able to give him kids of his own, and she’s also learned how easily good times can crash and burn, especially when the guy isn’t the settling-down type. The last thing her little boy needs is another loss in his life. The approach of Christmas brings other challenges, too. At Jill’s job as assistant marketing director for a mall, she’s juggling too many Santas. At home, she’s coping with a pair of yard-destroying dogs that Chad is housing for a friend. Then another relative, on learning that Spike has a large inheritance, decides to make a self-serving bid for parenthood. With troubles floating down like snowflakes, Jill needs a real-life Santa Claus. If only Daddy, M.D., proves up to the task! Written by the award-winning author of the Safe Harbor Medical series. “I found this book a delightfully good read. It is a heartwarming story with lots of good humor.”--Susan Wray, Romance Reviews

Book excerpt: Noting the increase in false accusations of child sexual abuse where divorce and custody litigation is in progress, this book examines the consequences of such accusations for everyone involved and provides defensive strategies for those falsely accused. The book draws on four case studies, including a personal one, to illustrate the chronology and effects of false allegations brought by the mother against the father, noting commonalities among the cases, and personality traits of the accuser and of the accused. The effects of false allegations and subsequent proceedings on the child are also detailed. The book then explores this phenomenon as "Sexual Allegations in Divorce" or SAID Syndrome, and identifies "red flags" during proceedings that suggest this syndrome may be occurring. The book also examines how social service agencies and courts appear to work in concert to substantiate false allegations rather than investigating to determine the truth, and how therapeutic interventions, when no abuse occurred, can affect children. The dubious use of anatomically correct dolls as evidence of sexual abuse in such cases is also examined. Finally, the book summarizes the legal and social service problems inherent to such cases, offering solutions, and then presents legal and emotional strategies for fighting false allegations. Three appendices include a questionnaire for identifying SAID syndrome, guidelines for determining presence of abuse, and a court monitor checklist. A list of support organizations is included, along with state listings of the Vocal National Network and a 29-item bibliography. (HTH)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HUMANS SHALL BE FREE compares how the gods peck at humans as they scramble for human souls with how men trample upon women as women compete for men’s attention : a physical model evincing spirituality in action. The main characters, Rose and Rhahaab, in spite of their beauty suffer at the hands of men and are victims of prejudice towards women – an instantiation of the subjection of humanity to cosmic forcesby men treading on and crushing women. Rose, a sixteen-year-old of uncommon beauty, turns out to be, as fate would have it, the seventh wife of a rich old man. Frustrated and unhappy with her life as she faces sexual starvation and strife, she turns to infidelity, suffers blackmail and ends up divorced. At this point, she resorts to paying men back in their own coins. Another pawn of fate, Rhahaab, as is her portion becomes the mother of a child without a father. She faces the problems of Paternity fraud, single motherhood, and litigations – all to make known the deeds (pre-arrangement), and evince the manipulations of the spirit-kind. Down the line, it dawns on Rose and Rhahaab that, like the inevitability of death, their exploitation by men is their fate, that women are made for men, they desire men and the protection that comes from serving a husband as testimony witnessing humans’ need for protection that stems from serving God. Nnamso Okon Ekpenyong is an author of Nigerian origins. He is a a family physician and has studied and trained at the university of Ibadan. He is a father and a husband. He is also the Director of clinical services at Golden Care Hospital, Lagos, Nigeria. His previous work is ‘Women shall be free’.

Book excerpt: This collection brings together discussions of the way in which Muslim and Jewish beliefs and practices are represented in modern literary texts of poetry, fiction and drama. The chapters collected here consider elements of the expression of Judaism and Islam in modern literature. Key topics such as religious ideas and teachings, aspects of mysticism, the tenets of religion, uses made of sacred texts, religion and popular culture and reflections of religious controversies are covered. While there is an embodied comparative element to the chapters, the essays are not confined by comparisons and cover a wide range of the literary expression of religious issues.

Book excerpt: After working with David on his previous work for the series, The Complete Kubrick, we knew we were on to a winner for this book. Not only is David Lynch a master of modern film-making but David Hughes is well-qualified to write this 'complete' book. The book covers all Lynch's films including Mulholland Drive, TV and other projects, as well as the unrealised ventures such as Revenge of the Jedi (later directed by Richard Marquand as Return of the Jedi). It also includes a foreword by Barry Gifford - the novelist behind Wild at Heart and co-writer with Lynch of the screenplay for Lost Highway - and excerpts from a new interview David Hughes carried out with David Lynch himself. The Complete Lynch is the only comprehensive study of this great director.
