Book excerpt: Noting the increase in false accusations of child sexual abuse where divorce and custody litigation is in progress, this book examines the consequences of such accusations for everyone involved and provides defensive strategies for those falsely accused. The book draws on four case studies, including a personal one, to illustrate the chronology and effects of false allegations brought by the mother against the father, noting commonalities among the cases, and personality traits of the accuser and of the accused. The effects of false allegations and subsequent proceedings on the child are also detailed. The book then explores this phenomenon as "Sexual Allegations in Divorce" or SAID Syndrome, and identifies "red flags" during proceedings that suggest this syndrome may be occurring. The book also examines how social service agencies and courts appear to work in concert to substantiate false allegations rather than investigating to determine the truth, and how therapeutic interventions, when no abuse occurred, can affect children. The dubious use of anatomically correct dolls as evidence of sexual abuse in such cases is also examined. Finally, the book summarizes the legal and social service problems inherent to such cases, offering solutions, and then presents legal and emotional strategies for fighting false allegations. Three appendices include a questionnaire for identifying SAID syndrome, guidelines for determining presence of abuse, and a court monitor checklist. A list of support organizations is included, along with state listings of the Vocal National Network and a 29-item bibliography. (HTH)

Book excerpt: The men of the Commencement series are back for another episode in their journey of spiritual growth. Allen, Tim, Jim, Davis and Chris are each facing their own individual dilemmas, and have decided that the best way to deal with the issues that life is confronting them with is to…retreat. The Retreat is the story of five different men from different walks of life finding refuge and regeneration in faith, which helps them to examine and reconceptualize their roles as men in a world of damaging, conflicting, and oftentimes confusing images, pressures and stereotypes. It’s about finding identity and affirmation that comes from fellowship with and trust in our Creator and Savior.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The public education system in New York is in turmoil. Is this because of leadership in Albany, the No Child Left Behind Act, parents who fail in their effort to raise children properly, or is it just the fault of kids who show little to no respect for authority, peers, or themselves? Or should we accept the most popular place of blame? The teacher is the problem. The former world, where teachers were revered, looked up to by children and parents, and respected because of the crucial role they played, is all but a forgotten memory. Today, parents and school administrators often demonize teachers and are openly critical of the tenure system, which protects their positions seemingly forever. Riverton School District has lots of issues. There is rampant bullying and peer intimidation. Some kids are even afraid to come to school. The disrespect and outrageous behavior runs not only unchecked, but leadership in Albany wants to see even less discipline and consequences for the young perpetrators. Brendan Moss teaches eighth-grade math at Riverton. As a widower and devoted father of three, he does his best to assist young people, but the school superintendent wants to use the veteran math teacher as a test case to overturn the right to lifetime tenure. Don’t Blame the Messenger addresses school policies, State Department of Education leadership, bullying, and why a teacher’s tenure should be maintained and viewed as something good for kids and the process of learning. The author works in the trenches, where truth and reality collide. Opinions on what is wrong with public education vary. Don’t Blame the Messenger is written by a teacher who knows how it really is.

Book excerpt: Lurid, controversial, and vulnerable to accusations of titillation or rabble-rousing, the works of Victorian investigative journalism collected here nonetheless brought unseen suffering into the light of day. Even today their exposure has the power to shock. As one investigator promised, “The Report of our Secret Commission will be read to-day with a shuddering horror that will thrill throughout the world.” Secret Commissions brings together nineteen key documents of Victorian investigative journalism. Their authors range from well-known writers such as Charles Dickens, Henry Mayhew, and W.T. Stead to now-forgotten names such as Hugh Shimmin, Elizabeth Banks, and Olive Malvery. Collectively, they show how unsparing descriptions of social injustice became regular features of English journalism long before the advent of American-style “muckraking.” The reports address topics as varied as child abuse, animal cruelty, juvenile prostitution, sweat-shops, slums, gypsies, abortion, infanticide, and other controversial social issues. The collection features detailed chapter introductions, original illustrations, a historical overview of investigative reporting in the nineteenth-century press, and suggestions for further reading.

His wife has died, leaving behind an infant daughter born while he was overseas. His small logging town of Lumberton, Washington, has grown but still runs on gossip. Almost overnight, Rollie the hero becomes a pariah for his scandalous decision to raise his daughter by himself—a child rumored not to be his—and for refusing to talk about his wartime exploits. The past two years have changed Kay Sorensen as well. Daughter of the Lumberton timber baron, Kay spent the war working for her father, organizing patriotic and charitable efforts, and discovering her love for politics and business. But when her husband—Rollie’s former platoon commander—returns, Kay expects, correctly, that he’ll make her quit her job. She’s dreamed of marriage as an equal partnership; now, she chafes under her husband’s cold tyranny. Did the war change him? Rollie might know, and Kay steels herself to beg information from a man her husband has publicly insulted. But neither Kay nor Rollie can anticipate how secrets, lies, and horrifying revelations may destroy them. Do two lonely, passionate rebels have the moral courage to stand up to gossip, defy cultural boundaries, and dare reinvent themselves in a world forever changed?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mama, something terrible is wrong with me. There is blood in my panties!" Those were the words of seven-year-old Sarah. Mama told her she must have fallen or something and not to worry. Sarah went away feeling sad; her chance for help was gone! It was Sarah's alter, Susie, who had been sticking pencils and other items in her private place. Susie had come when Sarah was only four years old. Susie had become Daddy's 'special' little girl by sitting on his lap. In return he gave her a dollar for any change she had. Daddy played with Susie's pee pee and it was Susie that slept in the upstairs bedroom with her fourteen-year-old brother. Later in life, two other alters would appear. "You Love Your Daddy, Don't You?" is told through the memories of Sarah. It reveals a child's determination to survive despite profound emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. This was compounded by constant neglect from both parents. About the Author: Sarah Harrison has written several articles for the Women's Institute for Incorporation Therapy's monthly newsletter as well as articles for spiritual magazines. She also volunteers as a mentor in a local school system, helps with special group activities in an assisted living home, and provides guidance to troubled parents and teens on www.experts.com. After the death of her husband, Sarah Harrison moved from Atlanta, Georgia in 2007 to a suburb near Charlotte, North Carolina to be near her grandchildren. She has joined Harrison United Methodist Church and is active in Youth Group, Emmaus, Epiphany, and Faith Partners.
