Book Synopsis Relativistic Electron Mirrors by : Daniel Kiefer
Download or read book Relativistic Electron Mirrors written by Daniel Kiefer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-25 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dense sheet of electrons accelerated to close to the speed of light can act as a tuneable mirror that can generate bright bursts of laser-like radiation in the short wavelength range simply via the reflection of a counter-propagating laser pulse. This thesis investigates the generation of such a relativistic electron mirror structure in a series of experiments accompanied by computer simulations. It is shown that such relativistic mirror can indeed be created from the interaction of a high-intensity laser pulse with a nanometer-scale, ultrathin foil. The reported work gives a intriguing insight into the complex dynamics of high-intensity laser-nanofoil interactions and constitutes a major step towards the development of a relativistic mirror, which could potentially generate bright burst of X-rays on a micro-scale.

Book Synopsis Ponderomotive Laser Acceleration and Focusing in Vacuum by :
Download or read book Ponderomotive Laser Acceleration and Focusing in Vacuum written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel approach for the generation of ultrabright attosecond electron bunches is proposed, based on acceleration in vacuum by a short laser pulse. The laser pulse profiles is tailored such that the electrons are both focused and accelerated by the ponderomotive force of the light. Using time-averaged equations of motion analytical criteria for optimal regime of acceleration are found. It is shown that for realistic laser parameters a beam with up to 106 particles and normalized transverse and longitudinal emittances
Book Synopsis Optically Guided Laser Wakefield Acceleration by :
Download or read book Optically Guided Laser Wakefield Acceleration written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The possibility of utilizing the fields of an intense laser beam to accelerate particles to high energies has attracted a great deal of interest. The study of laser driven accelerators is motivated by the ultrahigh fields associated with high intensity laser pulses. The peak amplitude of the transverse electric field of the laser pulse is given . A laser driven accelerator that has a number of attractive features is the laser wakefield accelerator (LWFA). In the LWFA, a short intense laser pulse propagates through an underdense plasma. The ponderomotive force associated with the laser pulse envelope expels electrons from the region of the laser pulse. If the laser pulse is sufficiently intense, virtually all of the plasma electrons will be expelled. When the laser pulse length is approximately equal to the plasma wavelength, large amplitude plasma waves (wakefields) will be excited with phase velocities approximately equal to the laser pulse group velocity. The axial and transverse electric fields associated with the wakefield can accelerate and focus a trailing electron beam. The ratio of the accelerating field, E sub z, to the laser field in the LWFA is given.
Book Synopsis Laser-Strophometry by : Wilfried Staude
Download or read book Laser-Strophometry written by Wilfried Staude and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-10-23 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of two decades of research work which started with an accidental observation. One of my students, Dipl. phys. Volkmar Lenz, - ticed that the speckle pattern of laser light scattered by a cuvette containing diluted milk performed a strange motion every time he came near the cuvette with his thumb. After thinkingabout this e?ect we came to the conclusion that this motion can only be caused by scatteringparticles with di?erent velocities, as in the case of the di?raction pattern of an optical grating: A linear motion of the grating does not change the pattern whereas a rotation of the grating does. The observed speckle motion could then be explained qualitatively as produced by the inhomogeneous velocity of the convection within the cuvette which was produced by the heat of the thumb. The theoretical treatment of this e?ect revealed that the velocity gradient of the light scattering medium is responsible for the speckle motion. The idea to use this e?ect for developingmeasurement techniques for velocity gradients arose almost immediately. For that purpose we had to develop not only experimental set-ups to measure the pattern velocity but also the theory which describes the connection between this velocity and the velocity gradient. The result of this work together with the description of a method developed by another group forms the contents of this book. I am indebted to the students who worked in my laboratory and developed the measurement techniques. These were, in temporal order, Dr.
Book Synopsis Accelerating and Vortex Laser Beams by : Taylor & Francis Group
Download or read book Accelerating and Vortex Laser Beams written by Taylor & Francis Group and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-12-13 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives insight into the theoretical backgrounds of optical vortices and their propagation in free space and simple optical systems. The author's theoretical analysis allows full comprehension of recent results and allows a bridge between the mentioned topics. For example, there is a solution for an accelerating beam propagating along an almost half-circle, obtained from a solution for an asymmetric vortex Bessel mode. And vice versa, there is a solution for an optical vortex with accelerating focusing, obtained from a solution for a two-dimensional accelerating Pearcey beam. The book is intended for graduate and postgraduate students studying optics or wave physics.
Book Synopsis Envelope Evolution of a Laser Pulse in an Active Medium by :
Download or read book Envelope Evolution of a Laser Pulse in an Active Medium written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors show that the envelope velocity, v{sub env}, of a short laser pulse can, via propagation in an active medium, be made less than, equal to, or even greater than c, the vacuum phase velocity of light. Simulation results, based on moving frame propagation equations coupling the laser pulse, active medium and plasma, are presented, as well as equations that determines the design value of super- and sub-luminous v{sub env}. In this simulation the laser pulse evolves in time in a moving frame as opposed to their earlier work where the profile was fixed. The elimination of phase slippage and pump depletion effects in the laser wakefield accelerator is discussed as a particular application. Finally they discuss media properties necessary for an experimental realization of this technique.
Book Synopsis High-Energy Laser Ponderomotive Acceleration by : C. Barnes
Download or read book High-Energy Laser Ponderomotive Acceleration written by C. Barnes and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new concept of TeV-range laser ponderomotive acceleration in a plasma is proposed. Particles are accelerated in the point-like scattering by the leading front of the laser pulse, propagating at the group velocity less than the vacuum speed of light. In this scheme, the gain in particle energy is determined by the group velocity and does not depend on laser intensity, which determines the quantum probability of acceleration. The quantum and classical analysis of the scheme proposed is presented. Estimates show that the concept proposed is a promising technique for compact laser acceleration of TeV energy range.
