Book excerpt: Excerpt from Subdued Southern Nobility: A Southern Ideal The publishers have requested me to write a preface to this little volume, and that, too, without assigning any valid reason for so doing. I must confess I see no necessity for one myself, only it may be well to ask my readers to be charitable in their criticisms. The ideal to which I ask the reader's attention begins before the recent unpleasantness between the North and South, continues during that gigantic struggle for national existence, and ends before a final reconstruction takes place. My readers are, therefore, brought face to face with some suppressed historic facts that will be found interesting in connection with the characters introduced. It has been my object from beginning to end to give facts rather than overdrawn fancies, and if I have failed to make the book as interesting as my readers may have expected, they have the assurance of having received "more truth than poetry" for their money. Book Synopsis Interracial Intimacies by : Randall Kennedy
Download or read book Interracial Intimacies written by Randall Kennedy and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2012-09-12 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the same piercing intelligence as the bestselling Say it Loud!, Interracial Intimacies hits a nerve at the center of American society: race relations and our most intimate ties to each other. “The best book written on the subject, an exhaustive source of deep, rich scholarship and surefooted brilliant analysis.”—Seattle Times Analyzing the tremendous changes in the history of America’s racial dynamics, Randall Kennedy challenges us to examine how prejudices and biases still fuel fears and inform our sexual, marital, and family choices. He takes us from the injustices of the slave era up to present-day battles over race matching adoption policies, which seek to pair children with adults of the same race. He tackles such subjects as the presence of sex in racial politics, the historic role of legal institutions in policing racial boundaries, and the real and imagined pleasures that have attended interracial intimacy. A bracing, much-needed look at the way we have lived in the past, Interracial Intimacies is also a hopeful book, offering a potent vision of our future as a multiracial democracy.

Download or read book Xiongnu written by Bryan K Miller and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book raises the case of the world's first nomadic empire, the Xiongnu, as a prime example of the sophisticated developments and powerful influence of nomadic regimes. Launching from a reconceptualization of the social and economic institutions of mobile pastoralists, the collective chapters trace the course of the Xiongnu Empire from before its initial rise, traversing the wars that challenged it and the reformations that made it stronger, to the legacy left after its eventual fall. Xiongnu expounds the economic practices and social conventions of steppe herders as fertile foundations for institutions and infrastructure of empire, and renders a model of "empires of mobilities," which engaged the control less of towns and territories and more of the movements of communities and capital to fuel their regimes. By weaving together archaeological examinations with historical investigations, Bryan K. Miller presents a more complex and nuanced narrative of how an empire based firmly in the steppe over two thousand years ago managed to formulate a robust political economy and a complex political matrix that capitalized on mobilities and alternative forms of political participation, and allowed the Xiongnu to dominate vast realms of central Eurasia and leave lasting geopolitical effects on the many worlds around them.
