Book excerpt: The study on Urban mobility interconnection with air transport infrastructure was developed under DG MOVE's Framework Contract MOVE/A3/2017-257 for Impact Assessment and Evaluation and corresponds to a support study for the evaluation of Regulation (EU) N° 1315/2013 on Union Guidelines for the development of the trans- European transport network. The objective is to provide additional evidence on the connections between the airports of the TEN-T network and the centre of the cities they are serving, as well as between these airports and the passenger hubs which allow to connect air transport with railway nodes. This work shall contribute as additional evidence for the impact assessment for the revision of the TEN-T Regulation, Regulation (EU) No 1315/2013, of which certain provisions relate to the so-called urban nodes (i.e. the cities on the network) and to the airport connections by rail, including high-speed. The report provides multiple inputs and evidence in relation to the provisions related to airport transport infrastructure assessable by rail, multimodal connections by conventional transport modes and multimodal nodes transport infrastructure (air cargo terminals), as well as in relation to accessible, safe and secure infrastructure and specific services and applications that smooth the landside connectivity to urban nodes and to the main TEN-T railway hubs. In addition, a specific assessment of the potential of innovative modes to enhance airport land connectivity and airport catchment areas is also conducted in a standalone annex. The data collection process and the research findings provided evidence for the development of highly informative and appealing factsheets, containing the most important elements to characterise accessibility to/from a sample of 100 airports. These factsheets also cover the 20 busiest cargo airports and 20 case studies focused on examples of successful and less modal connections to/from the airports.
