Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive contributed volume that aims to describe and explain the design, fabrication, operating characteristics, and specific applications of the most popular and useful types of specialty optical fibers. These "specialty fibers include any kind of optical fiber that has been architecturally manipulated to diverge from a conventional structure. For instance, metal-coated fibers can be utilized for bandwidth improvement, and hollow core fibers offer more controllable dispersion for sensitive medical procedures. Applications for these specialty fibers abound in the biomedical, sensors, and industrial fields, as well as in more traditional communications capacities. This book will act as a specialty fiber "guided tour, hosted by the top names in the discipline. The globally renowned editors, Drs. Mendez and Morse, have extensive experience in research, academia, and industry.*Completely covers biomedical and industrial sensor technology with emphasis on real world applications *Comparative studies of pros and cons of all fiber types with relation to test and measurement, mechanical properties and strength, and reliability*Easy to access essential facts and details at the begining of each chapter

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the past few decades, information technologies have been evolving at a tremendous rate, causing profound changes to our world and our ways of life. In particular, fiber optics has been playing an increasingly crucial role within the telecommunication revolution. Not only most long-distance links are fiber based, but optical fibers are increasingly approaching the individual end users, providing wide bandwidth links to support all kinds of data-intensive applications such as video, voice, and data services. As an engineering discipline, fiber optics is both fascinating and challenging. Fiber optics is an area that incorporates elements from a wide range of techno- gies including optics, microelectronics, quantum electronics, semiconductors, and networking. As a result of rapid changes in almost all of these areas, fiber optics is a fast evolving field. Therefore, the need for up-to-date texts that address this growing field from an interdisciplinary perspective persists. This book presents an overview of fiber optics from a practical, engineering perspective. Therefore, in addition to topics such as lasers, detectors, and optical fibers, several topics related to electronic circuits that generate, detect, and process the optical signals are covered. In other words, this book attempts to present fiber optics not so much in terms of a field of “optics” but more from the perspective of an engineering field within “optoelectronics.

Download or read book Handbook of Optical Fibre Sensing Technology written by José Miguel López-Higuera and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2002 with total page 840 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pursuit of more efficient telecommunications has resulted in a major research push towards communication systems that are lighter, faster, more reliable and cheaper. This has given rise to great advances in devices and in fibre optics. A spin off of this research is the development of optical sensors, which use photonic materials and concepts. Optical sensors have wide-ranging applications in various fields including telecommunications, civil engineering, chemical industry, biomedical applications and the electrical power industry. This comprehensive handbook, written by a wide spectrum of leading international researchers, offers a clear understanding of the theory as well as focusing on the many practical applications throughout the industry. The book is organised into four main sections: - * Preliminary: Offers an overview of Fiber Optic Sensing Technology, the applications where it can be used successfully and also serves as an overall introduction to the handbook. This section also analyses current publications in the field. * Fundamentals of Photonics and Components for Sensing: Describes the photonic concepts and components needed in order to carried out the understanding, the design, and to realise photonic sensor systems. * Principles and Techniques for Sensing: Provides the principles and techniques in which the photonic sensing technology is based in order to understand how sensors work and how sensors can be made. * Applications: An ample overview of the developments which are successfully taking place in laboratory and field trials, as well as the available sensors in the current market and the future trends in this field. Applications are featured throughout the text, and this section focuses primarily on niche applications. This handbook would prove to be a valuable reference resource for researchers, engineers and postgraduate students in fibre optical sensing, as well as practising engineers in optical communications and electronic engineering, civil engineering, aerospace industry, biomedicine and robotics.

Download or read book Biomedical Optical Instrumentation and Laser-Assisted Biotechnology written by A.M. Verga Scheggi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996-08-31 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Study Institute "Biomedical Optical Instrumentation and Laser Assisted Biotechnology" was held November 10-22, 1995 in Erice, Sicily. This was the 19 th conference organized by the International School of Quantum Electronics, under the auspices of the "Ettore Majorana" Center for Scientific Culture. The contributions presented at the Institute are written as extended, review-like papers to provide a broad and representative coverage of the fields of laser techniques, optoelectronics systems for medical diagnosis, and light and laser applications to Biology and Medicine. The aim of the Institute was to bring together some of the world's acknowledged scientists and clinicians that belong to different disciplines and consequently do not usually meet, but who have as a common link the use of optoelectronics instrumentation, techniques and procedures. Most of the lecturers attended all the lectures and devoted their spare hours to stimulating discussions. We would like to thank them all for their admirable contributions. The Institute also took advantage of a very active audience; most of the participants were active researchers in the field and contributed with discussions and seminars. Some of these seminars are also included in these Proceedings. The Institute was an important opportunity to discuss latest developments and emerging perspectives on the use of laser sources and optoelectronic techniques for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
