Book excerpt: In this work, a two-phase lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) approach is implemented to investigate the hydrodynamic behavior of a single droplet impingement on a dry surface. LBM is a recently developed powerful technique to compute a wide range of fluid flow problems, especially in applications involving interfacial dynamics and complex geometries. Instead of solving the non-linear Navier-Stokes equations, which are complicated partial differential equations, LBM solves a set of discretized linear equations, which are easy to implement and parallelize. The fundamental idea of LBM is to recover the macroscopic properties of the fluid which obeys Navier-Stokes equations, by using simplified kinetic equations that incorporate the essential physics at the microscopic level. Considering the numerical instability induced by large density difference between two phases during the LBM simulations, the particular LBM scheme used in this study has its benefits when dealing with high density ratios. All the simulations are conducted for density ratio up to 50 in a three-dimensional Cartesian coordinate system, and three important dimensionless numbers, namely Weber number, Reynolds number and Ohnesorge number, are used for this study. To validate this multiphase LBM approach, several benchmark tests are conducted. First, the angular frequency of an oscillating droplet is calculated and compared with the corresponding theoretical value. Errors are found to be within 6.1% for all the cases. Secondly, simulations of binary droplet collisions are conducted in the range of 20[less than]We[less than]80. Three different types of outcome, namely coalescence collision, separating collision and stretching collision, are presented. Then, the normal impact of a liquid drop impinging on a smooth dry surface is simulated at various liquid Weber and Reynolds numbers. A novel wall boundary condition is implemented in order to study the effects of wetting characteristic of the impinging surface. Results are shown to compare the spread factor dependence on impact velocity, liquid density, liquid viscosity, surface tension and surface wetting characteristics. The results are validated with experimental data. Two different outcomes are obtained: deposition and splashing break-up. The transition to splashing is found to be dependent on the liquid Weber and Reynolds numbers.

Book excerpt: Droplet formation from a flexible nozzle plate driven by a prescribed-waveform excitation of a piezoelectric is numerically investigated using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model with the VOF method. The droplet generator with a flexible nozzle plate, which is free to vibrate due to the pressure acting on the plate, is modeled in a computational domain. The CFD analysis includes the fluid-structure interaction between fluid and a flexible plate using large deflection theory. The problem is characterized by the nondimensional variables based on the capillary parameters of time, velocity, and pressure. The CFD model is validated with experiment results. This study examines the characteristics of the applied waveforms and nozzle plate material properties to change the vibrational characteristics of the nozzle plate. The effect of fluid properties on the droplet formation process is also investigated focusing on surface tension and viscous forces. The mechanism of the droplet formation excited by a drop-on-demand piezoelectric waveform is investigated using a step-function and a pulse waveform. The piezoelectric displacement plays an important role in generating either forward-driven momentum or a suction pressure inside the chamber. For the step-function waveform, the nondimensional applied impulse is defined and used to characterize the post-breakoff droplet volume. Increasing the impulse of the piezoelectric can be used to cause a faster droplet velocity and it is shown that the vibration of the nozzle plate has a strong effect on the droplet velocity, shape, and volume. Surface tension has strong influence on the droplet formation characteristics which is in contrast to a viscous force that makes little difference on the droplet formation for a range of viscosities studied. For the combination of a fluid with high surface tension and the most flexible nozzle plate, this system can cause the droplet not to be ejected from the nozzle. Successive droplet impingement onto a solid surface is numerically investigated using a CFD multiphase flow model (VOF method). The main focus of this study is to better understand the hydrodynamics of the non-splash impingement process, particularly the effect of a dynamic contact angle and fluid properties along with the interaction between successive droplets while they are impinging onto a solid surface. The pre-impact droplet conditions are prescribed based on a spherical droplet diameter, velocity, and inter-droplet spacing. The molecular kinetic theory is used to model the dynamic contact angle as a function of a contact line velocity. The numerical scheme is validated against experiment al results. In the impact spreading and receding processes, results are analyzed to determine the nondimensional deformation characteristics of both single and successive droplet impingements with the variation of fluid properties such as surface tension and dynamic viscosity. These characteristics include spreading ratio, spreading velocity, and a dynamic contact angle. The inclusion of a dynamic contact angle is shown to have a major effect on droplet spreading. In successive droplet impingement, the second drop causes a surge of spreading velocity and contact angle with an associate complex recirculating flow near the contact line after it initially impacts the preceding droplet when it is in an advancing condition. This interaction is less dramatic when the first drop is receding or stationary. The surface tension has the most effect on the maximum spreading radius in both single and successive droplet impingements. In contrast to this, the viscosity directly affects the damping of the spreading-receding process.

Book excerpt: Although multiphase gas and liquid phenomena occurs widely in engineering problems, many aspects of multiphase interaction like within droplet dynamics are still not quantified. This study aims to qualify the Lattice Boltzmann (LBM) Interparticle Potential multiphase com- putational method in order to build a foundation for future multiphase research. This study consists of two overall sections. The first section in Chapter 2 focuses on understanding the LBM method and Interparti- cle Potential model. It outlines the LBM method and how it relates to macroscopic fluid dynamics. The standard form of LBM is obtained. The perturbation solution obtaining the Navier-Stokes equations from the LBM equation is presented. Finally, the Interparticle Potential model is incorporated into the numerical LBM method. The second section in Chapter 3 presents the verification and validation cases to confirm the behavior of the single-phase and multiphase LBM models. Experimental and analytical results are used briefly to compare with numerical results when possible using Poiseuille channel flow and flow over a cylinder. While presenting the numerical results, practical considerations like converting LBM scale variables to physical scale variables are considered. Multiphase results are verified using Laplaces law and artificial behaviors of the model are explored. In this study, a better understanding of the LBM method and Interparticle Potential model is gained. This allows the numerical method to be used for comparison with experimental results in the future and provides a better understanding of multiphase physics overall.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interactions between droplets were studied using two lattice Boltzmann methods (LBMs). The Shan-Chen LBM, in which repulsive forces between fluids maintain phase separation, was used to simulate systems with three immiscible components. The simulations demonstrated the three equilibrium configurations of two droplets in a third fluid: adhering, separated, and engulfed. Simulations of adhering droplet pairs, called Janus droplets due to their two-sided structure, in shear flow revealed the structure of the internal flow and the dependence of the rotation rate on the orientation of the droplet. A second type of interaction between droplets was simulated with the free-energy binary-liquid LBM: binary droplet collisions in confined simple shear flow. The conditions for coalescence were quantified and the effects of geometry and the parameters of this Cahn-Hilliard-type phase field model on the critical conditions were examined. Two parameters of the phase field model, the thickness of the diffuse interface and the mobility of the phase field, are important. Simulations with highly-resolved droplets, with radii spanning 200 lattice nodes, were used to determine the minimum film thickness before coalescence, its relationship to the interface thickness, and the effect of the mobility on the evolution of the minimum distance between the droplet interfaces during collisions. The critical conditions for coalescence in these simulations were compared with published experiments with polymers. Unlike the experimental polymer system, the interfaces of interacting droplets are often charged, as in the case of oil-water emulsions. To simulate such liquid systems, the free-energy binary-liquid LBM was coupled with an iterative finite difference solver for the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann equation that describes the electrostatic potential near a charged surface in an electrolyte solution. Simulations of collisions between charged droplets with constant zeta potentials in a sheared electrolyte showed the effects of surface charge on the critical conditions for coalescence.

Book excerpt: Theory and Application of Multiphase Lattice Boltzmann Methods presents a comprehensive review of all popular multiphase Lattice Boltzmann Methods developed thus far and is aimed at researchers and practitioners within relevant Earth Science disciplines as well as Petroleum, Chemical, Mechanical and Geological Engineering. Clearly structured throughout, this book will be an invaluable reference on the current state of all popular multiphase Lattice Boltzmann Methods (LBMs). The advantages and disadvantages of each model are presented in an accessible manner to enable the reader to choose the model most suitable for the problems they are interested in. The book is targeted at graduate students and researchers who plan to investigate multiphase flows using LBMs. Throughout the text most of the popular multiphase LBMs are analyzed both theoretically and through numerical simulation. The authors present many of the mathematical derivations of the models in greater detail than is currently found in the existing literature. The approach to understanding and classifying the various models is principally based on simulation compared against analytical and observational results and discovery of undesirable terms in the derived macroscopic equations and sometimes their correction. A repository of FORTRAN codes for multiphase LBM models is also provided.
