Book excerpt: We describe recent laser-solid interaction experiments using the 500 fs Janus Nd:glass (1053 nm) laser presently at 1.5 TW power level. The laser beam path is enclosed in vacuum from the compressor to the target and is focused using an off-axis paraboloid. Optical diagnostics monitor the near field pattern, focal spot, spectrum, temporal shape and pre-pulse level. A 12 [mu]m diameter (FWHM) focal spot is achieved (2.5 × diffraction limit) corresponding to a peak irradiance of 8 × 1017 W cm−2 on target. A suite of x-ray diagnostics characterize the x-ray emission from the plasma. We present results for normal incidence irradiation of high-Z (Zn, Ge, Mo, Sn) solid targets. The supra-thermal electrons produced in the short scale length plasma have temperature T{sub H}> 100 keV and can efficiently fluoresce the cold K-[alpha] lines in the 8--30 keV energy range.

Book excerpt: We are studying the feasibility of utilizing K[alpha] x-ray sources in the range of 20 to 100 keV as a backlighters for imaging various stages of implosions and high areal density planar samples driven by the NIF laser facility. The hard x-ray K[alpha] sources are created by relativistic electron plasma interactions in the target material after a radiation by short pulse high intensity lasers. In order to understand K[alpha] source characteristics such as production efficiency and brightness as a function of laser parameters, we have performed experiments using the 10 J, 100 fs JanUSP laser. We utilized single-photon counting spectroscopy and x-ray imaging diagnostics to characterize the K[alpha] source. We find that the K[alpha] conversion efficiency from the laser energy is ≈ 3 x 10−4.

The major goal of the project was to demonstrate using a compact laser the creation of a new ultra-high energy density plasma regime characterized by simultaneous extremely high temperature and high density, and to study it combining experimental measurements and advanced simulations. We have demonstrated that trapping of intense femtosecond laser pulses deep within ordered nanowire arrays can heat near solid density matter into a new ultra hot plasma regime. Extreme electron densities, and temperatures of several tens of million degrees were achieved using laser pulses of only 0.5 J energy from a compact laser. Our x-ray spectra and simulations showed that extremely highly ionized plasma volumes several micrometers in depth are generated by irradiation of gold and Nickel nanowire arrays with femtosecond laser pulses of relativistic intensities. We obtained extraordinarily high degrees of ionization (eg. we peeled 52 electrons from gold atoms, and up to 26 electrons from nickel atoms). In the process we generated Gigabar pressures only exceeded in the central hot spot of highly compressed thermonuclear fusion plasmas. The plasma created after the dissolved wires expand, collide, and thermalize, is computed to have a thermal energy density of 0.3 GJ cm-3 and a pressure of 1-2 Gigabar. These are pressures only exceeded in highly compressed thermonuclear fusion plasmas. Scaling these results to higher laser intensities promises to create plasmas with temperatures and pressures exceeding those in the center of the sun.

Book excerpt: We report, for the first time, that the energy of femtosecond optical laser pulses, E, with relativistic intensities I> 1021 W/cm2 is efficiently converted to X-ray radiation, which is emitted by "hot" electron component in collision-less processes and heats the solid density plasma periphery. As shown by direct high-resolution spectroscopic measurements X-ray radiation from plasma periphery exhibits unusual non-linear growth ~E4-5 of its power. The non-linear power growth occurs far earlier than the known regime when the radiation reaction dominates particle motion (RDR). Nevertheless, the radiation is shown to dominate the kinetics of the plasma periphery, changing in this regime (now labeled RDKR) the physical picture of the laser plasma interaction. Although in the experiments reported here we demonstrated by observation of KK hollow ions that X-ray intensities in the keV range exceeds ~1017 W/cm2, there is no theoretical limit of the radiation power. Therefore, such powerful X-ray sources can produce and probe exotic material states with high densities and multiple inner-shell electron excitations even for higher Z elements. Femtosecond laser-produced plasmas may thus provide unique ultra-bright X-ray sources, for future studies of matter in extreme conditions, material science studies, and radiography of biological systems.

This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spectroscopic investigations of the x-ray emission of plasmas heated by 120 ps, frequency doubled pulses from the JANUS Nd: glass laser are presented. High Z K-shell spectra emitted from slab targets heated to near 10[sup 17] W cm[sup[minus]2] intensity are investigated. High resolution ([gamma]/[Delta][gamma]>5000) x-ray spectra of multicharged ions of H-like Ti, Co, Ni, Cu, and also H-like Sc in the spectral range 1.5--3.0[angstrom] are obtained in single laser shots using a spherically bent Mica crystal spectrograph with a 186 mm radius of curvature. The spectra- have one dimensional spatial resolution of about 25[mu]m and indicate that the size of the emission zone of the resonance, transitions is25[mu]m. Simultaneous x-ray images of the plasma from a charge-coupled device pinhole camera confirmed that the plasma x-ray emission is from a similar sized source. Survey spectra[gamma]/[Delta][gamma]=500--1000) taken with a flat LiF (200) crystal spectrometer with a charge-coupled device detector complement the high resolution data. Two dimensional LASNEX modeling of the laser target conditions indicate that the high K-shell charge states are produced in the hot dense region of the plasma with electron temperature2 keV and density[approximately]10[sup 22] cm[sup[minus]3]. These experiments demonstrate that with modest laser energy, plasmas heated by high-intensity 120 ps lasers provide a very bright source of hard[approximately]8 keV x-ray emission.

Book excerpt: In this thesis we present the dynamics of relativistic fast electrons produced in the laser-solid interactions at the intensities greater than 1018 W/cm2. In particular, the effects of pre-formed plasma in front of a solid target on the generation and transport of these fast electrons is studied. The presence of such a pre-formed plasma is ubiquitous in almost all the present short pulse high intensity laser-solid interaction experiments. First, the generation of fast electrons in the presence of pre-formed plasma of varying density scale-lengths is studied with the help of Particle In Cell (PIC) simulations. It is shown that the fast electrons energy increases with the increasing pre-formed plasma, consistent with the experimental observations. The possible mechanism of generation of such energetic electrons is studied. It is proposed that the interaction of plasma electrons with the laser in the presence of ambipolar electric field, generated due to the laser heating, can result in the electron acceleration beyond laser ponderomotive energy. The analytical and numerical studies of this heating mechanism are presented. In the second part of thesis, the influence of pre-formed plasma on the fast electrons transport is studied. Especially the physics of refluxing of these fast electrons due to the excitation of electrostatic sheath fields inside the pre-formed plasma is investigated. It is shown that this refluxing is responsible for the `annular ring shaped' copper K[alpha] x-ray emission observed in the recent high intensity laser-solid experiments.

Book excerpt: Formulas are derived which contain corrections to previous work and relate the x-ray spectrum produced from a laser-heated plasma to the number and total energy of suprathermal electrons in the plasma. These formulas, together with experimental x-ray spectra, have been used to determine the characteristics of the suprathermal electron distributions produced under differing experimental conditions. Specifically, the number and total energy of suprathermal electrons as well as the suprathermal electron temperature, alpha kT/sub e/, are related to the experimental x-ray data. It is found that the suprathermal electron temperature is nearly independent of wavelength when the incident laser energy is constant.
