They extol the virtue of athletics for participant and spectator alike. Of greater rarity are those that look critically at the political, social, economic, and psychological underpinnings of contemporary sports. Violence in sports is among the relatively neglected issues of serious study. Sports Violence is perhaps the first collection of scholarly theory and research to examine in detail aggression within and surrounding sports. As such, it seeks to present the broadest possible range of interpretations and perspectives. The book is, therefore, both interdisciplinary and international in scope. Two chapters, by Guttmann and Vamplew, are concerned with historical analyses of sports violence. Definitions and perspectives on aggression in general, and sports-related aggression in particular, are the topics of Chapters 4 through 7 by Smith, Bredemeier, Mark, Bryant, and Lehman, and Mummendey and Mummendey. Here, a wide variety of social and psychological theories are brought to bear on the conceptualization of aggression on the playing field and in the stands. Dunning and Liischen, both sociologists of sport, examine the origins, structure, and functions of violence, of sports, and of their interconnections. Psychological interpreta tions and research are presented in chapters by Russell and Keefer, Goldstein, and Kasiarz, while Bryant and Zillmann examine the portrayal and effects of aggression in televised sports.

In Ethiopian football, these factors have not been extensively studied. Seid Suleiman Mohammed conducted a research study to investigate the relationship between mental toughness and competitive anxiety in Ethiopian football players. The study involved 180 male football players aged between 18 and 35 years. The participants were asked to complete two questionnaires: the Sports Mental Toughness Questionnaire (SMTQ) and the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2). The SMTQ assessed the players' mental toughness levels, while the CSAI-2 evaluated their anxiety levels before and during the game. The results of the study showed a significant negative correlation between mental toughness and competitive anxiety. This means that football players with higher levels of mental toughness experience lower levels of competitive anxiety. The study also found that there were no significant differences in mental toughness and competitive anxiety levels between professional and amateur football players. Overall, the study highlights the importance of mental toughness in Ethiopian football players' performance and the need for strategies to improve mental toughness levels and reduce competitive anxiety.

Anxiety in sports is considered as an important issue for many athletes. It refers to a sort of nervous and fear emotion formed by frustration of self-esteem and self- confidence, or increasing of the sense of failure and guilty, which is resulted by the threat from being unable to achieve goals or to overcome obstacles at the right time. For the purpose of the study the subjects were selected randomly from 63rd State Athletic Championships of West Bengal and East Zone Universities which participated in inter-university tournaments during 2013-14 to measure the pre-competition anxiety by a questionnaire Sport Competition Anxiety Test (SCAT) developed by Rainer Marten. 25 University level football players and 25 state level male athletes selected randomly from East Zone inter-university tournaments during 2013-14 and 63rd State Athletic Championships of West Bengal. To find out pre-competition anxiety between Team game and individual game't' test was applied. The result showed that there was significant difference on pre-competition anxiety between team game male players and individual game male athletes. The team game male players had less pre-competition anxiety than the individual game mail athletes.
