Book excerpt: With the objective of being able to do an optic link between two CubeSats, a low cost attitude control system is studied and designed. The system requirements are set by the Electronics Department of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, who fixed a combination of micro-controller, driver and motors that should suit with the needs of the project. With the objective of keeping it very low cost, the motor studied is a recycled motor from an HDD (Hard DriveDisk). The current state of the art in attitude control systems for CubeSats is studied and a decision is made regarding the needed components of our low cost system. The kinematic and dynamic equations of the system are determined and the reaction wheel ismodeled as simple as possible to develop a control law system for the CubeSat. An open-loop and closed-loop model are tested to prove their stability. In order to test our hardware, the driver is studied to identify all the different parameters that can be modified and the computer is set with the appropriate programs to be able to communicate with the driver. The motor specific parameters like the motor speed constant and the resistance are found and correctly set in the drivers to successfully run the motor at full speed.

Book excerpt: This book is written for aerospace engineers who have completed their BS degree and are interested in the design and analysis of rocket attitude control systems. It introduces a new approach to the design, characterized by its robustness. Current LV attitude control systems are designed based on classical SISO control theory, and they lack robustness. The theory used here truly offers a technique that enables us to design control systems that are reasonably insensitive to math modeling errors and can withstand disturbances such as gust, and in addition it doesn’t need external states estimator, such as Kalman filtering. Extensive simulation results, which demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach, are presented in this book. Basic rocket theory and a concept of H-infinity control system design technique are explained for those who are new in these fields of study.

Book excerpt: While a paradigm shift in space industry has already started involving “mass production” of higher standardized, large distributed systems such as constellations, there are no effective solutions existing for the “mass removal” of satellites. Many indicators point to a further increase in the space traffic in Earth orbit in the near future, which could imply new dynamics in the evolution of the space debris environment. Even in case of diligent compliance with the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee (IADC) mitigation guidelines, the growth in space traffic complicates its management and drastically increases the probability of accidents and system failures. NASA scientist Donald J. Kessler proposed a scenario in which the density of objects in low Earth orbit is high enough that collisions between objects could cause a cascade that renders space unusable for many generations. Therefore, a reliable and affordable capability of removing or servicing non-functional objects is essential to guarantee sustainable access to Earth orbit. Recently, the CubeSat design standard introduced a new class of cost-efficient small spacecraft and thereby offers a potential solution to the active debris removal (ADR) problem. The development of a novel “CubeSat-compatible” ADR technology has significant advantages such as the use of commercial off-the-shelf parts, reduced launch cost, and reduced design efforts. This thesis presents –in the frame of an ADR mission– an approach to advanced rendezvous and docking with non-cooperative targets via CubeSat. It covers the design process of simulation systems used for verification purposes, the ideation and implementation of novel guidance, control, and docking techniques, as well as their verification and evaluation. The outcome of this research is a series of validated software tools, processes, technical devices, and algorithms for automated approach and docking, that have been tested in simulation and with prototype hardware.

The results of the analytical design are compared with those of an analog computer study and also with experimental results from a low-friction platform. The results show the steady-state and transient behavior of the system using single-degree-of-freedom integrating gyros was reasonably good. A major advantage of using gyros for torque sources is that the gyros also act to stabilize the vehicle directly, even in the absence of an external reference, so that when the target is occulted, an alternate reference is not required. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important parts in a satellite is the Attitude Determination and Control system (ADCS). Without it, solar panels would not be facing the sun nor antennas be pointing the Earth. Among the available options, a reaction wheel enables an accurate control on all 3 axis without the need of additional fuel, just by a low power consumption from the batteries. In this thesis, a complete project on the design and construction of an ADCS for a Cube- Sat (a miniature yet functional satellite) of 1 DoF is developed. First, the state of the art is explained as an introduction, followed by the physical background and equations used for the system simulation. After studying the feasibility of the system dimensioning parameters with Simulink, the design is explained. In the construction process section, a detailed description of each part is provided, along with a full diagram showing all the electronic connections. A magnetometer is used as an attitude sensor (as a compass), a DC brushed motor and compact disks as a Reaction Wheel, LiPo batteries for power supply and an Arduino as a micro-controller and coding platform. All the code used, as the parts calibration and setting and the PID control system, is provided and explained, followed by a brief performance testing and feedback of the system after assembly. At the end, the conclusions and follow-up can be found, along with the references.

Book excerpt: Spacecraft formation flight has been identified as a critical enabling technology for achieving many scientific, commercial, and military objectives. One of the primary challenges of a formation flight mission is the control of the relative motion between spacecraft. Before any flagship missions will launch, technology development missions will be required to demonstrate the utility and functionality of formation flying systems. This thesis describes the complete attitude and formation control design for the MotherCube formation flight technology demonstration mission in LEO. A model of the spacecraft's sensors and actuators is developed and analyzed. Using curvilinear orbit theory, a simple LQR control law is used to generate a set of desired relative accelerations for formation control. A newly developed two-tier numerical allocation scheme is used alongside an independent PD attitude control law to generate a set of actuator commands which provides 3-axis attitude stabilization as well as formation control with guaranteed feasibility of actuator commands. An Extended Kalman Filter was developed to estimate the system attitude and angular rate from sensor measurements. To test these algorithms, a simulation environment was developed. This environment includes realistic models of space environment and the major perturbation effects which a LEO spacecraft formation would encounter. In order to improve the fidelity, a new intermediate-accuracy method for computing attitude-dependent aerodynamic and solar effects was also developed. Finally, results from the simulation are used numerically validate the dual-allocator approach, assess the performance of the control laws and provide system level metrics such as fuel use and required maneuver time.

Book excerpt: Micronewton electrospray thrusters are a promising new actuator for CubeSat attitude control. Electrospray thrusters have advantages over current state of the art CubeSat attitude actuators in mass, volume, and their ability to produce translational acceleration in addition to control moments. An attitude determination and control system was designed for a 1U CubeSat assuming commercial-off-the-shelf attitude determination hardware components and six electrospray thrusters developed by the MIT Space Propulsion Laboratory. A high fidelity spacecraft dynamics simulation was constructed for analysis of the performance of the ADCS system. Attitude determination was tested with an engineering model of a 1U CubeSat, and the entire ADCS system was tested in simulation. Results of these preliminary tests show the use of electrospray thrusters as attitude actuators to be feasible, although significant work remains to complete a flight-ready ADCS system.

Book excerpt: This four volume report was prepared in order to compile, describe, and apply available nonlinear analysis and design techniques for space vehicle attitude control systems and to outline additional areas of future effort to improve present analysis and design procedures. Each of the four volumes is relatively independent of the others. Volume I is a definition and description of the problems associated with the design of the space vehicle attitude control systems. Volume II treats in detail the principal techniques for the analysis of nonlinear control systems and shows the application of these techniques to specific attitude control system problems. Volume III discusses three general problems in space vehicle attitude control systems, (1) single axis on-off gas jet system design, (2) active attitude control system design for a spin-stabilized vehicle, and (3) the design of a control system for a satellite vehicle with reaction wheels and gas jets. Volume IV is a collection of references and bibliography with annotations and comments covering the spectrum of the study effort.
