Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyanobacterial symbioses are no longer regarded as mere oddities but as important components of the biosphere, occurring both in terrestrial and aquatic habitats worldwide. It is becoming apparent that they can enter into symbiosis with a wider variety of organisms than hitherto known, and there are many more still to be discovered, particularly in marine environments. The chapters cover cyanobacterial symbioses with plants (algae, bryophytes, Azolla, cycads, Gunnera), cyanobacterial symbioses in marine environments, lichens, Nostoc-Geosiphon (a fungus closely related to arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi) symbiosis, and artificial associations of cyanobacteria with economically important plants. In addition, cyanobiont diversity, sensing-signalling, and evolutionary aspects of the symbiosis are dealt with. Renowned experts actively involved in research on cyanobacterial symbioses deal with ecological, physiological, biochemical, molecular, and applied aspects of all known cyanobacterial symbioses. This volume on cyanobacteria in symbiosis complements the two earlier volumes on cyanobacteria published by Kluwer (Molecular Biology of Cyanobacteria, edited by D.A. Bryant and Ecology of Cyanobacteria, edited by B.A. Whitton and M. Potts). Together, the three volumes provide the most comprehensive treatment of cyanobacterial literature as a whole. The book will serve as a valuable reference work and text for teaching and research in the field of plant-microbe interactions and nitrogen fixation.

Book excerpt: "The concern about the exhaustion of fossil fuels and the harmful effects of their emissions to the environment is guiding efforts to find new energy alternatives. One of the most promising energy resources is hydrogen (H2). Cyanobacteria are among the most important candidates for photobiological H2 production. Some filamentous cyanobacteria have evolved to differentiate specialized cells called heterocysts where nitrogen fixation and H2 production take place. The complete understanding of the process of heterocyst differentiation is of great importance for photobiological H2 production. Prior to this study, there were no quantitative culture-level models that describe the effects of cellular activities and cultivation conditions on the heterocyst differentiation. Such a model was developed in this thesis, incorporating photosynthetic growth, heterocyst differentiation, self-shading effect on light penetration, and nitrogen fixation. This first-generation model was found to describe well the experimental results and it was able to predict different culture properties. Since the productivity and economics of all photosynthsis-related processes are influenced by the light utilization efficiency, the effect of red vs. white light, and their intensities, on cell growth and heterocyst differentiation was also investigated. Red light was found not only to stimulate the growth of the studied microorganisms but also to give higher heterocyst frequencies. Gas vesicles were another interesting structure of some cyanobacteria studied in this thesis. Gas vesicles provide cyanobacteria with a mechanism of buoyancy regulation. Purified gas vesicle suspensions had been shown to improve oxygenation in oxygen limited systems. In order to improve the cell-collection efficacy of cyanobacteria with gas vesicles, three different flocculants were tested and compaired, i.e. polyethyleneimine (PEI), chitosan and MPE-50 (a commerical product from Ondeo Nalco Center, exact formulation unknown). Even though, they showed similar flocculation efficacy at low cell concentrations, chitosan flocculation ability was greatly increased when the pH of the cell suspension was adjusted to lower values. Chitosan was proved to the useful for cyanobacterial cell collection using a concentration of 50 mg/L and adjusting pH of the cell sample to 5-7. The sensitivity of chitosan to changes in pH may be useful also in the later step of recovery and purification of gas vesicles after cell lysis."--Abstract

Book excerpt: Genetics and Regulation of Nitrogen-Fixing Bacteria This book is the second volume of a seven-volume series, which covers all fields of research related to nitrogen fixation - from basic studies through applied aspects to environmental impacts. Volume II provides a comprehensive and detailed source of information concerning the genetics and regulation of biological nitrogen fixation in free-living prokaryotes. This preface attempts to provide the reader with some insight into how this volume originated, how it was planned, and then how it developed over the several years of its production. Once the editorial team was established, the first job was to decide which of the many free-living diazotrophs that have been subjected to genetic analysis should be included in this volume. Would we need to develop specific criteria for selection or would the organisms, in effect, select themselves? Of course, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Azotobacter vinelandii, which have served (and still serve) as the main model organisms for the genetic analysis of diazotrophy, plus some of the other bacteria described in this volume, did indeed select themselves. However, there was considerable discussion surrounding well-characterized fixing species, like Azorhizobium caulinodans and Herbaspirillum seropedicae, both of which are able to fix atmospheric N under free-living conditions.

Book excerpt: Cyanobacteria constitute the most widely distributed group of photosynthetic prokaryotes found in almost all realms of the earth and play an important role in Earth's nitrogen and carbon cycle. The gradual transformation from reducing atmosphere to oxidizing atmosphere was a turning point in the evolutionary history of the earth and made conditions for present life forms possible. Cyanobacteria: From Basic Science to Applications is the first reference volume that comprehensively discusses all aspects of cyanobacteria, including the diverse mechanisms of cyanobacteria for the advancement of cyanobacterial abilities, towards higher biofuel productivity, enhanced tolerance to environmental stress and bioactive compounds and potential for biofertilizers. - Describes cyanobacterial diversity, stress biology, and biotechnological aspects of cyanobacteria - Explores the global importance of cyanobacteria - Provides a broad compilation of research that deals with cyanobacterial stress responses in both controlled laboratory conditions as well as in their natural environment
