Book excerpt: The reaction of cycloheptatrienyltricarbonyl molybdenum cation with various main group V donor ligands (L) yielded, in general, mono-substituted complexes, [C[subscript 7]H[subscript 7]Mo(CO)[subscript 2]L][superscript +]. [superscript 31]P nmr studies on some related di-tertiary phosphine complexes provided a convenient and unequivocal determination of the stereochemistry. The reduction of the cationic cycloheptatrienyl complexes with sodium borohydride provided a suitable synthetic route to the group V derivatives of cyclo- heptatrienetricarbonylmolybdenum. The infrared, [superscript l]H and [superscript 13]C nmr, and mass spectral properties of these complexes were studied. Some main group IV ligands bonded to cycloheptatrienyldicarbonylmolybdenum were also prepared and studied by spectral means. A number of main group IV - group VI metal penta- carbonyl anionic derivatives have been prepared by the reaction of the chloropentacarbonyl anions with the organolithium compounds of the group IV elements. These compounds have the general formula, [R[subscript 3]M' -M(CO)[subscript 5]][superscript -] (where R = Me, Ph or halogen; M' = Si, Ge, Sn or Pb; M = Cr, Mo or W). Approximate carbonyl force constants were calculated from the infrared carbonyl stretching vibrations and these provided some insight into the nature of the metal-metal bonds. Transition metal nitrosyl derivatives have also been prepared by the reaction of some anionic complexes with nitrosonium hexafluorophosphate. These compounds have the general formula LM(CO)[subscript 4]NO (where L is a main group IV ligand or a halogen group and M is Mo or W). The carbonyl and nitrosyl force constants were calculated and are discussed in terms of the relative bonding properties of CO and NO ligands. Finally, the oxidation reaction of some dinuclear metal carbonyls with AgNO[subscript 2] led to the formation of metal carbonyls containing nitro ligands. Linkage isomerism involving nitro and nitrito species was encountered in solution. The [(CH[subscript 3]CN)[subscript 3]Re(CO)[subscript 3]] + cation was formed 2 - from the oxidation reaction of [Re[subscript 4](CO)[subscript 16]][superscript 2-] in acetonitrile.

This book was released on 2003-10-14 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invaluable book distils the research accomplishments of Professor Fred Basolo during the five decades when he served as a world leader in the modern renaissance of inorganic chemistry. Its primary focus is on the very important area of chemistry known as coordination chemistry. Most of the elements in the periodic table are metals, and most of the chemistry of metals involves coordination chemistry. This is the case in the currently significant areas of research, including organometallic homogenous catalysis, biological reactions of metalloproteins, and even the solid state extended structures of new materials. In these systems, the metals are of primary importance because they are the sites of ligand substitution or redox reactions. In the solid materials, the coordination number of the metal and its stereochemistry are of major importance. Some fifty years of research on transition metal complexes carried out in the laboratory of Professor Basolo at Northwestern University is recorded here as selected scientific publications. The book is divided into three different major research areas, each dealing with some aspect of coordination chemistry. In each case, introductory remarks are presented which indicate what prompted the research projects and what the major accomplishments were. Although the research was of the academic, curiosity-driven type, some aspects have proven to be useful to others involved in projects that were much more applied in nature.

Book excerpt: Organometallic Syntheses, Volume 3 focuses on the synthesis of compounds containing carbon-metal bonds, including ligands, compounds, chlorides, and derivatives. The selection first elaborates on bis(cyclopentadienyl) organolanthanide and organoyttrium chloride, methyl, and hydride complexes and base stabilized alkali metal halide adducts of bis (pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) lanthanide chlorides. The text then examines cyclopentadienyl metal carbonyl and nitrosyl derivatives, ferrocenylamine, cobalticinium and rhodicinium salts, and alkyl transition metal derivatives. The publication takes a look at transition metal complexes containing organophosphorus ligands, transition metal derivatives containing chalcogen ligands, and coinage metal derivatives. The text also reviews transition metal organometallic compounds, including compounds of group IA, IIA, IIB, and IVA. The selection is a vital reference for researchers interested in the synthesis of compounds containing carbon-metal bonds.

This book was released on 1990-09-30 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organometallic chemistry belongs to the most rapidly developing area of chemistry today. This is due to the fact that research dealing with the structure of compounds and chemical bonding has been greatly intensified in recent years. Additionally, organometallic compounds have been widely utilized in catalysis, organic synthesis, electronics, etc. This book is based on my lectures concerning basic organometallic chemistry for fourth and fifth year chemistry students and on my lectures concerning advanced organometallic chemistry and homogeneous catalysis for Ph.D. graduate students. Many recent developments in the area of organometallic chemistry as weIl as homogeneous catalysis are presented. Essential research results dealing with a given class of organometallic compounds are discussed briefly. Results of physicochemical research methods of various organometallic compounds as weIl as their synthesis, properties, structures, reactivities, and applications are discussed more thoroughly. The selection of tabulated data is arbitrary because, often, it has been impossible to avoid omissions. Nevertheless, these data can be very helpful in understanding properties of organometaIlic compounds and their reactivities. All physical data are given in SI units; the interatomic distances are given in pm units in figures and tables. I am indebted to Professor S. A. Duraj for translating and editing this book. His remarks, discussions, and suggestions are greatly appreciated. I also express gratitude to Virginia E. Duraj for editing and proofreading.
