Book excerpt: High intensity picosecond laser plasma interaction experiments were performed to examine nonlinear scattering mechanisms in field ionized underdense plasmas. Broad and oscillatory spectra were observed for the forward scattered light. The Raman backscattered spectrum showed an extremely broad, supercontinuum like nature, extending from 450 nm to greater than 1200 nm at incident laser intensities of 2 X 10(exp 18) W/sq cm. Narrow and large amplitude modulations in the spectrum of the backscattered radiation were measured and are attributed to scattering from ion waves.

Book excerpt: Short pulse laser plasma interaction experiments using diffraction limited beams provide an excellent platform to investigate the fundamental physics of Stimulated Raman Scattering. Detailed understanding of these laser plasma instabilities impacts the current inertial confinement fusion ignition designs and could potentially impact fast ignition when higher energy lasers are used with longer pulse durations (> 1 kJ and> 1 ps). Using short laser pulses, experiments can be modeled over the entire interaction time of the laser using particle-in-cell codes to validate our understanding quantitatively. Experiments have been conducted at the Trident laser facility and the LULI (Laboratoire pour l'Utilisation des Lasers Intenses) to investigate stimulated Raman scattering near the threshold of the instability using 527 nm and 1059 nm laser light respectively with 1.5-3.0 ps pulses. In both experiments, the interaction beam was focused into a pre-ionized He gas-jet plasma. Measurements of the reflectivity as a function of intensity and k[lambda]{sub D} were completed at the Trident laser facility. At LULI, a 300 fs Thomson scattering probe is used to directly measure the density fluctuations of the driven electron plasma and ion acoustic waves. Work is currently underway comparing the results of the experiments with simulations using the VPIC [K.J. Bowers, et at., Phys. Plasmas, 15 055703 (2008)] particle-in-cell code. Details of the experimental results are presented in this manuscript.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser-plasma interactions (LPI) have been studied experimentally in high-temperature, high-energy density plasmas. The studies have been performed using the Omega laser at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE), Rochester, NY. Up to 10 TW of power was incident upon reduced-scale hohlraums, distributed in three laser beam cones. The hot hohlraums fill quickly with plasma. Late in the laser pulse, most of the laser energy is deposited at the laser entrance hole, where most of the LPI takes place. Due to the high electron temperature, the stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) spectrum extends well beyond {omega}{sub 0}/2, due to the Bohm-Gross shift. This high-temperature, high-energy density regime provides a unique opportunity to study LPI beyond inertial confinement fusion (ICF) conditions.

Book excerpt: Recent analysis and modeling of Nova experiments which address our understanding of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) will be presented. Forward and backward SBS levels have been investigated with SSD of varying bandwidth and with polarization smoothing using an f/8 focusing geometry to emulate NIF conditions. The interpretation of the experiments is aided using F3D, a fluid code which includes modeling of SBS and SRS; a parallel version of F3D is being developed which will allow the modeling of a plasma approaching the size of an entire NIF laser beam. Cryogenic targets have recently been employed to investigate the dependence of SRS saturation levels on ion wave damping via the Langmuir decay instability.

Parametric instabilities are the most important processes governing the laser-plasma interaction. Some parametric instabilities as two-plasmon decay or stimulated Raman scattering were investigated in this work using an optical signal, the so called 3/2 harmonics. As this harmonic originates from the plasma its characteristics provide important information about the plasma properties. The angular, spectral and temporal structure of this 3/2 harmonics were studied. Detailed theoretical analysis was made based on a new model to explain the measured results and to gain information about the generation process and the plasma.

Book excerpt: Laser-plasma instability (LPI) research at Los Alamos is done as a closely coupled theoretical and experimental scientific program to advance the ignition and weapons physics enterprises, which are integrated by the US Department of Energy as a national program. Past LANL experiments, performed as part of the Nova Technical Contract, on hohlraum plasmas approaching NIF conditions have raised two main questions regarding stimulated Raman back-scattering (SRS) in such plasmas: (1) How can the high observed values of SRS reflectivity persist at k;l, = 0.3 -- 0.45? (2) What are the non-linear mechanism(s) whereby SRS saturates? In this paper we address those two questions with results from experiments on the LANL, Trident laser, and from Vlasov and PIC modeling of relevant plasmas, all aimed at understanding the physics involved. We find that non-Maxwellian distributions driven by intense ohmic heating, as well as electron trapping by the daughter SRS plasma wave, are implicated in the high SRS reflectivities observed at high values of Id, . We also find that electron trapping and the secondary Langmuir Decay Instability are important ingredients in the non-linear evolution of SRS.

Book excerpt: Recent long-scale-length spherical target experiments, performed on the OMEGA EP laser, are analyzed for stimulated Raman side-scattering (SRSS). This work has been motivated by results obtained on experiments performed at the Nation Ignition Facility (NIF), relevant to directly-driven inertial confinement fusion (ICF). These NIF experiments have shown SRSS to be an important process, possibly responsible for the observed hot electron generation. Our model, based on ray tracing, is able to explain the time-dependent scattered light spectra from the OMEGA EP experiments: It identifies SRS side-scatter and near backscatter from portions of each incident beam where the scattered electromagnetic wave is generated in the direction parallel to contours of constant density. The nature of SRSS instability (temporal versus spatial growth) is discussed. It is suggested that the OMEGA EP platform could provide a good surrogate in which to develop SRSS mitigation strategies.

We use the code to study parametric instabilities, in particular stimulated Raman scattering. For conditions similar to those of single-hot-spot experiments, we find that kinetic effects are important in the saturation of this instability. Work is underway to make the code to 1 1/2 and 2D (resolving y and py) and parallelize it.

Book excerpt: Ultraviolet Thomson scattering has been fielded at the Omega Laser Facility to achieve accurate measurements of the plasma conditions in laser-produced high-temperature plasmas. Recent applications to hohlraum targets that have been filled with CH gas or SiO{sub 2} foams have demonstrated a new high temperature plasma regime of importance to laser-plasma interaction studies in a strongly damped regime such as those occurring in indirect drive inertial confinement fusion experiments. The Thomson scattering spectra show the collective ion acoustic features that fit the theory for two ion species plasmas and from which we infer the electron and ion temperature. We find that the electron temperature scales from 2-4 keV when increasing the heater beam energy into the hohlraum from 8-17 kJ, respectively. Simultaneous measurements of the stimulated Raman scattering from a green 527 nm interaction beam show that the reflectivity decreases from 20% to 1% indicating that this instability is strongly damped at high temperatures. These findings support green laser beams as possible driver option for laser-driven fusion experiments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nonlinear coupling of intense, monochromatic, electromagnetic radiation with plasma is considered in a number of special cases. The first part of the thesis serves as an introduction to three-wave interactions. A general formulation of the stimulated scattering of transverse waves by longitudinal modes in a warm, unmagnetized, uniform plasma is constructed. A general dispersion relation is derived that describes Raman and Brillouin scattering, modulational instability, and induced Thomson scattering. Raman scattering (the scattering of a photon into another photon and an electron plasma wave) is investigated as a possible plasma heating scheme. Analytic theory complemented by computer simulation is presented describing the nonlinear mode coupling of laser light with small and large amplitude, resonantly excited electron plasma waves. The simulated scattering of a coherent electromagnetic wave by low frequency density perturbations in homogeneous plasma is discussed. A composite picture of the linear dispersion relations for filamentation and Brillouin scattering is constructed. The absolute instability of Brillouin weak and strong coupling by analytic and numerical means is described. (auth).
