Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been prompted by our des ire to share with others our apprecia tion of the harmony and beauty in a particular sphere of modern optics known as "optical phase conjugation". Practical applications of the phase conjugated wave are likely to be far-reaching. Optical phase conjugation (OPC) combines in itself aesthetic and pragmatic attractiveness, a synthesis that has made OPC a subject of general attention. The figure presents the ap proximate rate of publications (number of articles per year) on OPC in the world literature for recent years, the lower curve denoting the work carried out in the USSR. The efforts of a large unofficial international collective have yielded an impressive result. 150 100 50 1975 1980 At present, the physical pro ces ses underlying various OPC methods are quite understandable, and it is the physics of OPC to which our book is devoted. Practical and scientific applications of phase-conjugated waves, which are of no less interest, have been touched upon in short, as major achievements in this sphere are a matter of the future. Today there are two main methods of OPC: i) by backward stimulated light scattering, ii) by four-wave mixing. Naturally, much attention is given to these methods in our book which, after the introductory Chap. 1, can be divided into two almost independent parts - Chaps. 2 - 5, and Chaps. 6 - 8.

Book Synopsis Studies of Phase-Conjugate Optical Device Concepts by : Pochi Yeh
Download or read book Studies of Phase-Conjugate Optical Device Concepts written by Pochi Yeh and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This contract studies the phase-reversal property of optical phase conjugation for navigational and other device applications. The study focuses on the development of the phase-conjugate fiber-optic gyro and the generation of new device concepts. Although much attention is paid to the aberration correction property of phase conjugation, little attention is paid to the phase reversal property. The phase-reversal property has important applications in inertial navigation devices. The general problem for this program is to generate new device concepts using the phase-reversal property of phase conjugation. Polarization scrambling is a well-known source of noise and signal fading in fiber-optic gyros. Some gyros avoid this problem by using polarization-preserving fibers and couplers to decouple the polarization modes. This program studies a new approach in which polarization-preserving phase conjugation is used to correct for polarization scrambling without the need for polarization-preserving fibers and couplers. There are several areas of significant progress in the first year of this program that are directly related to the development of the phase-conjugate fiber-optic gyro. These include: First experimental observation of the phase-conjugate Sagnac phase shift; and First demonstrations of rotation sensing with a phase-conjugate gyro and with a self-pumped phase-conjugate fiber-optic gyro.

Download or read book Studies of Nonlinear Optical Wave Mixing and Phase Conjugation with Partially Coherent Waves written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this research was the theoretical and experimental investigation of the physics of self-pumped and mutually-pumped phase conjugators and the development of novel applications. In addition, the scope of the research was expanded to include the effect of partial coherence (finite coherence length) on nonlinear wave mixing and phase conjugation in photorefractive media. Specifically, the effect of finite mutual coherence on the formation of index gratings, especially 2k-gratings, in two-wave mixing and self-pumped phase conjugation was studied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We demonstrated the first cw phase-conjugating mirror with gain, and made a self-oscillating resonator which emitted a diffraction-limited optical beam while severe phase aberration was present in the resonator. We demonstrated storable and erasable phase-conjugate images in the nanosecond regime by a one-photon photorefractive process. We achieved the first demonstration of a wide angle (approx. 45 deg.) narrowband approx. 1/10 cm) optical filter using phase conjugation. We achieved the first demonstration of full vector-wave phase-conjugation by which an image was restored after double-passing a birefringent phase aberrator. We demonstrated edge-enhancement of an optical phase-conjugate image in real time. Studies of resonant nonlinear refraction and phase conjugation in sodium vapor continued. (Author).

Book Synopsis Phase Conjugate Optics by : G. J. Dunning
Download or read book Phase Conjugate Optics written by G. J. Dunning and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this program has been the study, both theoretically and experimentally, of the use of phase conjugate optics for information processing and image transmission applications. A significant portion of effort was directed toward an improved understanding of the photorefractive effort and its application to two-wave and four-wave mixing. The authors developed a model for grating formation in photorefractive materials and have derived expressions for figures of merit, which aid in selection of materials and the optimization of efficiency and speed. They also developed a model for two-wave mixing in the transient regime, and measured response times for both tow-wave and four-wave mixing. Other devices and materials considered for ODP applications include the Hughes liquid crystal light valve and long-chain organic molecules. Measurements on several ODP configurations were performed. First, they used optical phase conjugation to transmit an image through a 1.75 m multimode fiber, with a resolution of better than 15 lines/mm. Secondly, they demonstrated several static convolution and correlation operations, using character masks. Finally, they investigated the use of phase conjugation for real-time optical correlation. Results of each of these experiments are described. (Author).
Book Synopsis Physics of Nonlinear Optics by : Y. V. G. S. Murti
Download or read book Physics of Nonlinear Optics written by Y. V. G. S. Murti and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-20 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is designed to serve as a textbook for courses offered to upper-undergraduate students enrolled in physics. The first edition of this book was published in 2014. As there is a demand for the next edition, it is quite natural to take note of the several advances that have occurred in the subject over the past five years and to decide which of these are appropriate for inclusion at the textbook level, given the fundamental nature and the significance of the subject area. This is the prime motivation for bringing out a revised second edition. Among the newer mechanisms and materials, the book introduces the super-continuum generation, which arises from an excellent interplay of the various mechanisms of optical nonlinearity. The topics covered in this book are quantum mechanics of nonlinear interaction of matter and radiation, formalism and phenomenology of nonlinear wave mixing processes, optical phase conjugation and applications, self-focusing and self-phase modulation and their role in pulse modification, nonlinear absorption mechanisms, and optical limiting applications, photonic switching and bi-stability, and physical mechanisms leading to a nonlinear response in a variety of materials. This book has emerged from an attempt to address the requirement of presenting the subject at the college level. This textbook includes rigorous features such as the elucidation of relevant basic principles of physics; a clear exposition of the ideas involved at an appropriate level; coverage of the physical mechanisms of non-linearity; updates on physical mechanisms and emerging photonic materials and emphasis on the experimental study of nonlinear interactions. The detailed coverage and pedagogical tools make this an ideal textbook for students and researchers enrolled in physics and related courses.
Book Synopsis Phasing a Dual Optical Path System Using an Optical Fiber as a Phase Conjugate Mirror by : Shawn M. Willis
Download or read book Phasing a Dual Optical Path System Using an Optical Fiber as a Phase Conjugate Mirror written by Shawn M. Willis and published by . This book was released on 2003-03-01 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phase conjugation properties of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a short multimode fiber have been investigated with an eye towards its application for a multi-channel double pass master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) system. In particular, properties of the SBS beam to compensate for the axial and transverse phase distortion between individual channels in a multi- channel amplifier system were studied. Two optical paths were created by covering half of the laser beam with a microscope slide, and also by spatially splitting the wavefronts with a 4 prism set-up. The Stokes beams that traversed the same optical paths as the pump beams were shown to compensate the phase distortion introduced by the different optical paths.
