Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Elegant representations of nature and the four seasons populate a wide range of Japanese genres and media. In Japan and the Culture of the Four Seasons, Haruo Shirane shows how, when, and why this practice developed and explicates the richly encoded social, religious, and political meanings of this imagery. Shirane discusses textual, cultivated, material, performative, and gastronomic representations of nature. He reveals how this kind of 'secondary nature, ' which flourished in Japan's urban environment, fostered and idealized a sense of harmony with the natural world just at the moment when it began to recede from view. Illuminating the deeper meaning behind Japanese aesthetics and artifacts, Shirane also clarifies the use of natural and seasonal topics as well as the changes in their cultural associations and functions across history, genre, and community over more than a millennium. In this book, the four seasons are revealed to be as much a cultural construction as a reflection of the physical world."--Back cover.

Book excerpt: With Hokusai, Utamaro and Kuniyoshi, Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) is one of the great protagonists of ukiyo-e . With respect to Hokusai, whom he constantly compared himself to, since he was around thirty years younger, Hiroshige made landscape and nature the focus of his work by instilling in the viewer a sense of harmony, serenity and peace that, still today, is universally admired. In fact, thanks to these qualities he is one of the most praised artists and is considered the "master of nature". Hiroshige renders the human figure with quick, direct lines that at times call to mind manga and anime sketches, though simplified and essential. This monograph presents a selection of around 230 works from the most important series by Hiroshige, including views of famous places in the capital of Edo as well as in the farthest provinces, but also a body of work with the most admirable images portraying animals, flowers and insects plus original drawings and print plates that are still intact. This publication, which covers the Japanese master's entire career, is divided into eight themed sections that discuss the most important series in a thorough and illustrative way: Early Works; Travel Images; Flowers, Birds and the Moon; Views of Distant Places; View of the Oriental Capital; Hiroshige: Life and Work; Hiroshige and His Print Work: Contemporaries and the West.

Book excerpt: Annotation The Shishu Ladies of Hilo traces the teaching of shishu (Japanese embroidery) in Hawai'i and describes in detail the modifications made to traditional motifs and materials. It is, however, much more than a historical record of a textile art form. It raises questions about the relationship between the women who made shishu, their ethnicity, and their needlework -- in short, the role of art in achieving ethnic identity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In James A. Michener the Japanese print has found its ideal commentator. Combining the finished literary style of an outstanding novelist with a mature knowledge of his subject, he is able to bring this great art form to life in words, directly communicating his understanding, love, and enthusiasm rather than obscuring his subject in pedantry. In fact, it might almost be said that he here lets the prints speak for themselves, in a wealth of magnificent illustrations and apt but unobtrusive commentary. It is only when one has finished the book that he realizes he has been conducted on a tour of three centuries of art, a tour so carefully arranged as to give a deep understanding of the history and aesthetics of Japanese prints, a new appreciation of a superlative art. The book has many other unique features. So far as consonant with his aim of presenting a full survey, Mr. Michener has illustrated the book with lesser-known masterpieces rather than with those few prints that have been reproduced almost ad nauseam. Unlike earlier books, this does not stop with the past century, but brings the subject completely up to date, introducing, in the modern Japanese print, some of the most exciting art being created in Japan—and in the world—today. The book also becomes a revealing account of the collecting of Japanese prints, with many valuable hints to collectors based upon the author's own experiences in gathering together one of the best print collections of recent years: it is a collecting field in which many hints are needed, with prices varying from $5 to $5,000 per print, and with forgeries and doubtful attributions on every hand.

Book excerpt: How artists from Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi to Whistler and Arthur Wesley Dow embraced and transformed Hokusai's dynamic style and innovations The great painter, book illustrator and print designer Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) has become the best known of all Japanese artists and one of the most famous and influential artists in the world. He was a key figure for the Japonisme movement in late 19th-century Europe, and his iconic images--especially the color woodblock print nicknamed "The Great Wave"--are frequently referred to in present-day art in both serious and frivolous forms, from sculpture, printmaking and painting to anime and emojis. This book looks at Hokusai from the viewpoint of fellow artists who incorporated lessons learned from him into their own work, including Hokusai's own students, his contemporary rivals and his many posthumous admirers working in a wide range of mediums, in Japan and around the world, from the late 19th century to the present. Lavishly illustrated and accompanied by illuminating and engaging texts, this publication invites readers to encounter the origins and enduring appeal of Hokusai's delightful art. Artists include: Félix Bracquemond, John Cederquist, Arthur Wesley Dow, Hiroshige, Sori Hishikawa, Hokkei, Hokusai, Winslow Homer, Loïs Mailou Jones, Henri Gustave Jossot, Shun'ei Katsukawa, Shunsho Katsukawa, Oi Katsushika, Eisen Keisai, Korin, Kuniyoshi, Paul Legrand, Manjiro Hokuga, Ogata Korin, Odilon Redon, Henri Rivière, Hoitsu Sakai, Hokuju Shotei, Hokushu Shunkosai, Kogan Tobari, Hokkei Totoya, Toyoharu Utagawa, Utamasa, Édouard Vuillard, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Samuel Wilson and Shigenobu Yanagawa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) designed a series of seventy landscapes depicting the provinces of Japan between 1854 and 1856. It was the first in a number of sets from the highly productive years of his later life. The designs comprising "Famous Places in the 60-Odd Provinces (Rokuju yoshu meisho zue) are taken from all corners of Japan, thus representing an enormous innovation in the choice of subject matter. Large sets published before this had depicted the famous routes between Edo and Kyoto, the Tokaido and the Kisokaido, but Hiroshige had never before ventured beyond these well-known themes/ The Japanese countryside was already depicted in graphic art, but mostly in travelers' guidebooks and not as full color prints. With this set, Hiroshige brought the Japanese countryside closer to the urban population. It evidently met with high acclaim: the publisher Koshimuraya Heisuke produced a large number of impressions. In this study, the author Marije Jansen briefly discusses Hiroshige's life and the formal aspects of this series. Jansen takes as her point of departure the set in possession of the German collector Gerhard Pulverer, which is generally acknowledged to be a superb example of a first edition, and compares this series to a number of other sets in public and private collections. The detectable printing variations in each design are carefully analyzed, making this an indispensable tool for collectors.

They have expressed their feelings through paintings, or altered their surroundings by making gardens or sculptures. Whatever forms their creations have taken, artists have managed to capture their visions of the environment for us to share. This book explains how art styles have developed through time, and how artists' techniques add to our understanding of their work. The subject of war and conflict is captured in a wide range of media, including photography, painting, sculpture, posters, textiles, and film. The information to help interpret works of art and understand the time in history in which they were created are included in this book.
