Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the specific circumstances that nurture fundamentalist beliefs and practices. It studies contemporary fundamentalist developments in several continents, involving groups associated with five major religions. The authors answer important questions regarding the 'rationality' of fundamentalism, its complex link with modernism, the nature of its relationship to a sacred text, and its perspectives on history and knowledge. No fixed set of qualities defines fundamentalism. Since it implies a view of the universe and a discourse about the nature of truth, it encompasses and transcends the religious domain. For that reason, every movement or cause is potentially fundamentalist.

Book excerpt: The emergence of the state of Israel has fundamentally changed the conditions of Jewish existence. The issues now facing Jews everywhere are totally different to those that confronted them only fifty years ago. This book provides the only thoroughly worldwide modern history of the Jews of the Diaspora. Robert Wistrich has drawn together an outstanding collection of authors from the United States, Europe and Israel in order to analyse the immense changes that have taken place since 1945 in a comprehensive, yet original, manner. Cultural, religious, domestic, political, economic and occupational transformations in Jewry are addressed in up-to-date studies. Terms of Survival reframes the nature of the debate by highlighting continuity and change in the position of the Jews throughout the world.

Book excerpt: Turkey is famed for a history of tolerance toward minorities, and there is a growing nostalgia for the "Ottoman mosaic." In this richly detailed study, Marcy Brink-Danan examines what it means for Jews to live as a tolerated minority in contemporary Istanbul. Often portrayed as the "good minority," Jews in Turkey celebrate their long history in the region, yet they are subject to discrimination and their institutions are regularly threatened and periodically attacked. Brink-Danan explores the contradictions and gaps in the popular ideology of Turkey as a land of tolerance, describing how Turkish Jews manage the tensions between cosmopolitanism and patriotism, difference as Jews and sameness as Turkish citizens, tolerance and violence.

This book was released on 1987 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work presents an account of modern Jerusalem's demographic evolution and a description of the city's socio-demographic profile at present. The demographic evolution will be traced back succinctly for about 150 years. The last two decades, since the reunification, is treated more intensively. The enormous contrast between the conditions that existed in the mid-19th century at the threshold of modernization, and those prevailing in contemporary Jerusalem, as residents and visitors can experience and study them, should convey an inkling of the progress made. This progress was not achieved by constructing a completely new city - as in the case of Tel-Aviv and many other places in Israel and elsewhere - but by the more intricate processes of reforming a historic and in this instance even a holy city, and developing it through additions of large areas and the innovations of modern life.
