Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Jamaica History These studies have been published with the double object of attempting to interest the people of Jamaica in the story of their own island, and of providing particulars of a few of the epochs in its history for the tourists and others who year by year visit its shores. It is also hoped that they may, perchance, appeal to some other of the inhabitants of that Empire of which Jamaica forms a small but very loyal part. Views of several of the scenes here reproduced have never before been published in any form. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Jamaica IN the year 1900 the present writer published a small volume entitled Studies in Jamaica History, giving the records of certain historic sites in the colony. In its issue of October 27, 1908, the Editor of the West India Committee Circular, commenting on the appoint ment of a Royal Commission to enumerate and report upon the historical monuments in England, drew attention to the need for the preservation of historic sites and buildings in the West Indies, and stated that a letter on the subject had been addressed by the West India Committee to the Colonial Office. On November 24 he was able to state that the Secretary of State for the Colonies (the Earl of Crewe) sympathised with the object of the West India Committee and had forwarded their representations to the governors of the various West Indian colonies, recommending them to their consideration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twentieth Century Jamaica NO book on Jamaica, written with intimate knowledge of the country and its people, has appeared for twenty years. Sir Sydney Olivier's White Capital and Coloured Labour does not pretend to treat of Jamaica only, and is in any case con cerned mainly with the economic and political aspects of West Indian life. It is the best book of its kind on the subject, though now and then I have found myself obliged to disagree slightly with some of its conclusions. Mr Archibald Colquhoun is another writer who (in Greater America) has surveyed the West Indian question; but he has done so from what may be called the international point of view. No abler work on the future of America in the Caribbean Sea has been issued since Greater America was published; but though the author devotes a couple of chapters to Cuba, on Jamaica he writes but a sentence or two. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bibliographia Jamaicensis: A List of Jamaica Books and Pamphlets, Magazine Articles, Newspapers, and Maps, Most of Which Are in the Library of the Institute of Jamaica The books have been classified under the various headings suggested by the works themselves, as well as by a study of Jamaica History. The list was originally compiled for insertion in the Jamaica Handbook for 1902. For the sake of space the titles were in some instances shortened, and the sizes of the volumes and other bibliographical information omitted. But, even when compressed as much as possible, the list was found too long for insertion in the Handbook; and it is accordingly issued in its present form. A few notes of general cross-reference have been added to the classification, but complete cross-references would be more voluminous than the list itself. All books treating on the West Indies generally could of course be fairly in cluded in a Jamaica Bibliography, but, as this would have unduly swelled the list, it has been thought advisable to include only such West Indian books as deal with Jamaica alone, adding only a few of the principal of those which deal chie y with this island. All books and pamphlets dealing solely with Jamaica have been catalogued, without reference to merit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aborigines of the West Indies A neglected field of scientific research, yet lying adjacent to and between the two great continents of America, is that comprising the vast collection of islands known as the West Indies. Although containing the first islands discovered by Columbus, and including the seas first traversed by Spanish ships, in the New World, it was many years before the actual condition and population of those islands was made known to the civilized world. Even' now, less, per haps, is known respecting them than of many portions of lands considered as unexplored. N 0 longer ago than 1878, I had the pleasure of discovering some twenty species of birds, which had until that time rested in obscurity, unknown and undescribed, and of sending to the Unit d States the first collection of aboriginal implements used by the Caribs of the Lesser Antilles. The West Indies are divided, as is well known, into the Greater and Lesser Antilles, the former comprising the islands of Cuba, Jamaica, Santo Domingo or Haiti, and Puerto Rico, to which we may add the Ms the latter, that crescent-shaped archipelago called the Caribbean Chain, connecting the larger islands with the continent of South America. These, again, are locally divided into Windward and Leeward, with reference to their situation respecting the prevailing trade-winds. Yet many of its most important historical, cultural, and political events and aspects are largely unknown beyond the island. The Jamaica Reader presents a panoramic history of the country, from its precontact indigenous origins to the present. Combining more than one hundred classic and lesser-known texts that include journalism, lyrics, memoir, and poetry, the Reader showcases myriad voices from over the centuries: the earliest published black writer in the English-speaking world; contemporary dancehall artists; Marcus Garvey; and anonymous migrant workers. It illuminates the complexities of Jamaica's past, addressing topics such as resistance to slavery, the modern tourist industry, the realities of urban life, and the struggle to find a national identity following independence in 1962. Throughout, it sketches how its residents and visitors have experienced and shaped its place in the world. Providing an unparalleled look at Jamaica's history, culture, and politics, this volume is an ideal companion for anyone interested in learning about this magnetic and dynamic nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a lively and richly illustrated history of the island of Jamaica from its discovery (1494) to the abolition of slavery (1838). Find more about the arrival of Columbus, the Spanish dominion, the English (Cromwell) capture in 1655 and the birth of the dreadful buccaneers of Port Royal (Henry Morgan)! Slaves are at the heart of the history of Jamaica: some fled from the plantations to become the feared Maroons (they almost ruined the entire colony), others like Tacky rebelled against the Whites. In the 18th century, Jamaica became a giant cane field as sugar represented the true wealth of the island. But everything stopped in 1838. The author has given priority to ancient testimonies to make it more exciting and lively.
